Restored this 46 Craftsman that I saved. Fabbed up a three handle and new collar for that. Tilt work table is really cool. Motor was not yet done for pic...

Well, I finally swapped drill presses with my grandfather today. I still feel like I'm hi-jacking his shop, but he keeps telling me to go for it.

I traded one of these :
attachment.php

A made in Taiwan, 8" Delta benchtop DP

for this :
attachment.php

A US made, 15" 1942(?) Craftsman benchtop, Underlined logo.
Model #101.03622 mftr by Atlas Press.

At some point, I'll have to replace the cracked wiring, and oil the rust spots on the casing. But I'm just going to clean/de-grease it and strip/wax the tables, leaving everything else as it is.

VERY nice Jake! It even has the speed reductions pulley! That could even be into the 30's, Is there a date code on the motor?

I couldn't read the Dunlap tag on the motor, but it shows up better in the pic I posted. I think it reads "D 31", so you are right. It was built sometime in the early 30's.

My grandfather bought it used sometime after he left the Navy, so that would be after 1952. I would guess closer to '59-60. He also has a Cman metal lathe that he bought from the same guy. I haven't looked at the tags on it yet, but I will when I bring it over to my shop. For now, it's just the DP and a bench.

what's the switch on the side for? The motor switch is on the motor right?

Probably an on/off switch in addition to the one that came with the motor, (since that one is hardly in a good spot if a drill bit gets hung up...)

Correct. That switch is the On/Off switch when operating the drill. There is another switch next to the motor, for servicing.

You can see the motor switch on the left, between the motor mount and the motor housing in this pic.

That's really neat, I'm hoping to find a good deal on nice vintage bench top like that one. I just missed one off CL a few weeks back for $75, must not have lasted long.

I did a little more digging, and found a thread on the GG site that helps me date this press to sometime around 1942. So I've edited my original post, again.

http://www.thegaragegazette.com/index.php?topic=12223.msg158018#msg158018

The motor was built in 1931, but the four spindles on the handle date it after 1936?, and the square switch plate date it after 1941?.

It seems that these machines were made from OEM stockpiles for some time.

I also found the image for making the SKF decal on the vintage machinery site. It was on the front of the head. I can still see the remnants and may make a new one after I clean the press up.

http://wiki.vintagemachinery.org/Decals-Craftsman.ashx

Now all I deed to find is the spindle cover, part #41-45. I doubt that I will find one, but it isn't the destination, it's the journey.

What are my choices for a vintage table top that has variable speed control? I want to set up some searches.

What do you mean by "variable speed control" are you talking about one of the CVT setups where you turn a dial on the face of the machine to adjust the speed? If so, the best ones IMHO are the benchtop Clausing machines. Delta/rockwell also made them as well as craftsman (not real common). Heads up on the clausing machines. Make sure it works good before you purchase it. Clausing parts are seemingly made of gold $$$$$$.

Here's my Craftsman 101.24810 which was my grandfathers and now mine. Somewhere in it's history, it's had a modern motor put on it, but I've located a Dunlap for it. I'd also be interested in finding a slow speed adapter for it.

Restoration to follow.

My 1938 Boice Crane model 1600. I need a more current picture though. I just need to finish the motor now and it will be complete.

ZKling covered most of the bases. The Craftsman King Sealy model had it as an option, not a lot of them were sold so very rare. (along with the table crank)

Another option is to use a small 3 phase motor and a VFD to controls speed.

And a really cheap option is a treadmill motor and use the variable speed control card from the treadmill, which is what I did on my floor stand Rockwell. That one opens a LOT of possibilities.

The only comment I get when I drag another free treadmill home is "Another one? what are you going to do with it?"

Then two days later its all broke down, the recyclable stuff recycled and I have another motor or two (Some have a tilting motor) and another control card...

What treadmill? :dunno:

Gah, right after I find the proper dunlap motor too. Found a few cheap treadmills on craigslist. Doing research. I need to slow it down as I do mostly metal stuff for jeeps/automotive.

My two Walker-Turners restored. I needed a vise for the large one and a deal came along with a milling vise and X-Y table, also an old Columbian bench vise. Thanks to "The Vises of GJ" thread I can't quit collecting bench vises.

Fuzzy pic, but its an old Buffalo forge head with a mixed bag of parts - replaced the bearings and belt - makes holes like a champ

Here's my Craftsman DP. I will never get rid of this guy. Got it a year ago and absolutely love it. It runs really smooth and has done everything I have needed so far.

The green color on mine looks a little different than most I've seen. Maybe I'm just becoming hard of seeing in my old age:beer:!!

Excellent DP TMT!! I recently got one like it and I'm trying to renew it now. Never saw a green like that either.

You are gonna love it nine!! It's almost amazing how crappy DP have come since they made beasts like this unit. My father-in-law has a "newer" DP with the same rated HP, but it's a joke compared to ours. I don't even think the amps are close to the same.

Nice work on these. I'd take that little one off your hands so you can buy more vises

I have the electrified version of 318fekim's Champion. Mine is a model "E"-30. The main difference is the base. It has the extension for the motor to mount onto. I think it should have had a two step pulley on the motor, but it had been changed to a single at some point.

This is what I started with:
Championbeforesideview_zps2e9ca74a.jpg

And what I ended up with:
Championsideview3_zps93f21665.jpg

I added the brass handle so it will self feed into softwoods, and it is much more comfortable than the original rod. I still want to fab up a steel table, but the oak has been working fine so far.

K Powers, that is an interesting table on your DP! Can you take some better pics of the details?

It's actually an aftermarket accessory vise/table, made by Modern Machine Tool. Way cool, I'd love one for one of my Delta 17's.
