Yeah the original switch is a on/off push button.

115-A.jpg

Being your switch has two toggle style switches, One may have been wired for on & off & the other one for forward/reverse?

BTW Welcome to the forum. [emoji481]

Doug
I was thinking on/of and light.

The light has it's own switch on the back of the shade. The top switch on the front is a three position switch with a "F" and "S" to left and right. The lower switch is up down "On" "Off" Maybe at some point it had a two speed motor. So 12 speed with the dual 6 groove pulleys up top I guess. I will take a closer look when I get home.

Who made the new one? That's a nice design.

Like it also and the brand is ‘sacem’ but can’t find much info about it.

Walker-Turner D900 series (Serial: 1 1140)

My neighbor got this from where he worked and used it a few years. He got cancer and sold some of his tools asking me if I wanted it. He sold it to me around 1993 for $150.00. It is in good condition, I only replaced the motor capacitor in 2016. I cleaned up the rust and lacquered the bare metal parts to keep from rusting again. The pole is WD40'd for now. I also replaced the lock handle (CS30) which was aluminum and broken with a 'Uxcell 22mm Metric L Shaped Angled Open Hex 6 point Socket Wrench' with the straight socket cut off. The curved end even has a hole for a bolt if you want to bolt the handle in, but is very tight without it... I looked high and low for some kind of replacement handle, but couldn't find one.

After I WD40'd the head to remove the grime, I tried lacquer thinner and a toothbrush and cleaned it that way. What happened was that it thinned the paint and redistributed the paint to areas were it was missing; so I went with it. The paint then hardened back up and got a fairly clean piece of machinery. A stroke of luck! Not totally clean, but impressively clean compared to the original color, which was close to black (with grease). Still would like to fill the hole marks on the table, I love the hole saw mark though!

Re: Show us your cool " old " drill press

Haven't started doing any restoration as yet, most of it is cosmetic, and figuring a "period" power switch arrangement:

Atlas made Craftsman bench top, ball bearing unit, late thirties, possibly early 40's. Love the "Long "C" Craftsman logo

Looks like Craftsman ripped off the Walker-Turner D900 circa 1940 design. Anyone have any ideas?

Sears contracted with many many companies to make the tools (and everything else) they sold. So it's not a rip off; Atlas was the Mfg that supplied the long C DP

The model number prefixes, designate the Mfg - 101 being Atlas, 103 and 113, being King Seely as examples.

Sears didn't manufacture anything themselves, it was all made for them for their branding...

Picked up the Buffalo no.18 today. Super stoked for $150 Only needs cleaning and new paint job. Everything moves smooth, and no slop or run out.
It needs a motor. I will be doing the treadmill motor thing.
Super stoked for the production table, table lift, and the slow speed attachment.
Still has the foot pedal also.
The slow speed attachment will get shelved, or sold. I won’t need it with the treadmill motor.

I would recommend hanging onto the slow speed setup until you're sure you can get the speeds you want.

Things like big hole saws need to run very slow but also need a lot of power.

What crguy said. By the time you get the treadmill motor down to low speed it won't have a lot of torque. The low speed setup will really help. Of course I am presuming you're going to do a bunch of metal drilling. If you do only woodworking then carry on.

Big mistake. Motor speed control works, bit it's like driving your car in 5th gear at 20mph. It's jist not good. I have a 1hp drill press that runs 18rpm in low gear. That torque is very nice for big drills.

I have had absolutely NO issues with a treadmill motor and a MC-30 Motor Control board controlling it. Mine is rated at 1-1/2 HP, and set for a crawl (well under 100 RPM) I can try to stop it with my hand and cannot.

Moreover as soon as the controller senses the load, it automatically adjusts for it and the speed will come right back to what was set. I've done this by hand, with an without a leather glove on, and in use drilling and hole cutting. NEVER had an issue.

All this with the 1.5 HP motor and MC-30 controller, Most TM motors are 2-1/2 HP and above, and use MC-60 controllers so it can only get better from a lost torque perspective.

I've been using this setup for almost 7 years and could not be happier. The motor has a 3" pulley driving a 4" pulley, and I've NEVER had to use anything else.

A treadmill motor is an AC/DC motor, and does not have the "torque issues" a straight AC motor might have at lower RPMS.

This is exactly what I have always heard.
It is the reason I want to go this route.

RP A question on your wood stove in the background: is it operational or stored?

Assuming operational, and assuming you store combustible liquids (like gasoline, either in cars or cans) you might want to consider raising it up on a pedestal so its not as likely to ignite any fumes?

Also is it a zero clearance stove? its really close to the back wall and a wood cabinet to the left?

It is farther from the back wall than it appears.
The wood cabinet is on wheels. Used as a mobile tool tray. It is only there when the stove is not in use.

Can anyone identify this one? No brand name available on the listing. Looks like decent quality and in decent shape except for the missing shroud....Listed for $40

IMG_20190816_185506.jpg drill press I picked up on Craigslist.
From the info I've gathered it was made in 1942.
Model #101.03582. I'm currently working on refurbishing it to working order for personal use. The spindle is bend towards the taper so I'm working on a way to fix or replace that. I've bought 2 replacement bearings for the spindle. The return spring coil cap has a broken tab so I'll need to fix that too. Also the motor needs some wire replacement. All that and I'm enjoying the project and excited to see it work.

Quite a project, but doable. I would suggest posting this on the craftsman "craftsman drill press" thread.

https://r.tapatalk.com/shareLink/to...share_tid=227480&share_fid=20318&share_type=t

You will find much more immediately relevant information and help there. Straightening the spindle can be done with a press and a couple of v blocks, but if you aren't comfortable with it find a local machine shop. It's not complicated but does require a lot of care.
You're approximately correct on the age of your dp. In 1942 that model was dropped in favor of a more austere model, known as the "Mohawk" due to wartime measures. You have the last of the good ones until after the war.

Show us your cool, "old" drill press

It lives again.
Got the 3phase motor, and VFD controller mounted today. All that is left is to clean up the wiring, and tear down and repaint.
So glad I went VFD and 3phase over the treadmill motor. By far the smoothest running belt drive press I have ever used.

Really happy to shorten up the top. Not having to run the slow speed attachment set up.

That looks like a great machine. Just a suggestion but you might want to think about adding a remote control right under the front belt guard. It's more convenient then using the main VFD panel. It's two parameter changes on the VFD and about $20 in misc. components.

I just purchased this beautiful drill press. All complete with light. It has a lot of run out that I need to figure out how to fix.

I have never seen a buffalo table lift before... nice!
I like those presses but I only see basket cases for sale.

Sure enough I looked and found one but the lift is much different and awkward looking.
Also has a cool turret mount but it is pretty pricey.

email them to yourself, Or USB to laptop, click "Open folders to view files|"
Or download the Ta-A-Talk and sign in, and upload right from your phone.
Might need about 6 or 10 posts total to be able to add/upload pictures either way.

Finally have something I can post here. Have had a WTB in my sig forever, with no luck. Finally a friend of mine sent me a link to a Craig’s list ad. I have cleaned it up a little (one as bought photo included) and it works great. Seems to be all original just doesn’t have the light and back belt cover. It’s a 1945 and came out of the watch case factory linked below in the mid 50s. Very happy with this pick up!

The last thing I needed for the Buffalo no.18 drill press. Was the original cast belt guard. I called Buffalo forge company. And as luck would have it. Joe had 1 last one kicking around the shop. He sent me a couple pictures of it. And sent it out to me today.
