Trainman: nice thread and collection. i have collected a few over the last few years and they are sitting in many places in my shop and storage waiting for me to spiff them up.

just curious if you might want to make a list of the most valuable or rare to the most common for those of us that can't always tell the difference?

All: here's my concave and convex plane by Union

Here's one of mine (Stanley no. 4) that I restored from a rusty old piece of ****. It's got a small section of the right side broken off, but it doesn't affect its use (and it gave me the confidence to try and restore my first plane).

attachment.php

The plane on the far right is a Stanley Bailey No.5 smooth bottom jack plane, type 9 (1902-1907).

I purchased a bulk number of old wooden hand planes back in June 2014. Some were marked, but most weren't. Of those marked, the majority of the marked ones were by John Bell of Philadelphia.

The story goes that a large chest was found in a room of a farm house purchased years ago, that contained all the tools found in the pictures.

Nice collections! I'll have to dig some of mine out later. Might be smart to do break them out now since the recluses are frozen! That Stanley # 45 is a beaut Trainman! Mine is missing some parts.

I have one of my grandfathers I'd like to restore but what are you doing to make the metal look like new? Mine has slight surface rust and some paint splattered on it.

Post a picture of the hand plane, sometimes I use electrolysis, sometimes a wire brush and sandpaper, some of mine were my great grandfather's and I enjoy restoring them

Trainman: any chance you might have before, during and after restoration of one or two of your planes? i know i for one would really enjoy watching a pro do one. i think i saw one on GJ last year, but not sure where to find it. if you know and can provide links on this thread i bet a lot more members will grab them and save them from the scrap yards.

i know one guy that has a cabinet full of nicer planes than my union and i think he had a couple of them on like new condition. i'd also be surprised if there isn't a web site or a forum on these good old tools.

thanks again for starting this thread

It's nice to see that I am not the only one with a hand plane collection

I'm fairly certain that you're far from alone.

Jim C.

Like I was saying, there's some pretty amazing hand plane collections out there...... This particular collection consists of mostly mint, NOS original condition, Stanley hand planes.

Jim

That's probably the best displayed collection of anything I've seen on the Garage Journal. Well done my friend.

I had to look at your profile just to give me an idea of what your interests are. They're fairly narrow in scope. I'm just the opposite, I buy and store any vintage, beautiful (or potential for beautiful), inexpensive, undervalued, tool. I spend more time messing with the tools themselves than using them for some constructive purpose.

How long have you been collecting Stanley planes? Did you start out buying bottom feeders like a lot of us?

On the one below, to remove the paint and grime, I put it in the Ultrasonic cleaner for 30 mins. It lifted all the paint to where I only had to rise it off with water. To get the unpainted surfaces polished, I did a 6 step sanding process followed by 3 steps of buffing compound. It takes a bit of time. And if you don't keep it oiled and dry, it will start rusting again eventually.

If we started a thread where we could swap plane parts and help each other out with our work would you be interested?

I found a few of my handplanes. sorry it was cold in my storage unit and getting dark so didn't take great pictures. if you have any questions on any of them just ask and i'll try to get a few more pictures. most of these could go to work tomorrow, but a little spiffing up is in order for all of them.

Bought this at a yard sale. I can't find any stampings other than STANLEY on the deflector and STANLEY RULE & LEVEL Co. on the blade. I think it might be a Stanley Model 65 or 97. It measures slightly under seven inches, and the blade is 1 5/16 wide. Can anyone identify it?

I will glass bead it later today to see if there are any other markings.

Also, the knob is missing. The threads do not appear to be SAE. Metric comes close. Are the screws proprietary (one of a kind), and are knob screws for vintage planes the same? Other than the missing knob, it appears to be in good shape and the blade is sharp and square with little use.

Not a 65; they have a different style adjuster knob on the rear:

Here's my hand plane "collection". Started many years ago when an older neighbor saw me working on something in my driveway and returned with an old plane . That gift lead me to pick up old Stanley's whenever I came across an interesting one in a yard sale. I use a few of them occasionally, and might be willing to part with the whole thing for the right price (except for that first one).

Doing some cleaning/organizing this morning and had most of my "users" on the bench and thought , why not.

I have a soft spot for Type 6a Stanley, although only the 3,4, 4-1/2 and 7 are that type. The stuff I have is the stuff I use.

Pendragon1998, Toolfool, Jim C., Thank you for your responses. I will assume that it is a model 18. I bead blasted it today and on the adjuster it reads "STANLEY, PAT. 8-3-97". I'm assuming that is 1897.

Without seeing all the little details, it's a little harder to approximate your plane's age. Stanley produced the #18 from 1888 to 1950. It was a pretty good block plane and still is. If you could post a few more pictures of the plane, particularly disassembled, that might help. Also, is there a Stanley logo at the top of the cutting iron? A picture of that logo would be helpful in dating the plane. I can say that the lever cap on your plane is an earlier version that was eventually redesigned to add some strength to it. If that's original to the plane itself, then your plane is probably 100 +/- years olds.
