Am I the only one who thinks these threads have become unwieldy?

over 1,000 pages on more than a few.

Show us you new tools, garage sale thread, show us your toolboxes, show us you favorite stripper....oh wait, different forum...

Just me, but I think these would be better with a year in front of them.

2017 show us you new tools,
2017 garage sale thread
2017 your favorite stripper...oh yeah, wrong forum; please forgive.

What do ya'll think?

I know what you mean.
I like the vises thread but it's more like a forum in itself . Yet you can ask a question, respond to one or just make a point and it may never even get acknowledged because people who would want to never saw it.

It's not just here, it's society in general.

Facebook, look at what I eat, look at me doing this, look at me doing that...how many selfies does one need to show!!!??

On my neighborhood app there's people that ask how much does this place charge to do x, y, z. Instead of asking just call the place and ask the source instead of other guessing how much a company charges or if a company can do what they want done. It's like people have lost / lack common sense.

That's why I'm off social media. Society as a whole is going down and going down fast. Just look at what has happened the last 15-20yrs compared to the last 50. The internet is helpful but it's really to blame.

Anyway....so, anyone want to show any new screwdrivers!!?

I have been floating on this forum a few years now. I have seen four near complete changes in members and watched the interests change as the market changed.

I have changed jobs a few times myself and evolved into a very different person than the me that joined back then.

People generally don't stay on forever for whatever reasons and new changes usually don't stick when the new crew changes in.

After a while you just learn to roll with the crew as they are.

I disagree with your first couple of statements. I've been involved with a few forums over the last dozen years. A couple of them as an extremely active member and as a vendor.

This is the only one where it's a rarity to see someone acknowledge someone else's comments or suggestions. It's almost like the person posting simply refuses to acknowledge anyone else as it can only be them self that could possibly answer a question

It's the craziest thing I've ever seen.

Oh sure there's plenty of "atta-boy" comments but it's rare to see much more than that.

In those massive threads I'll compliment someone or make a general comment, but if I have a specific question about something that I really want answered I start a new thread. I frequent a motorcycle forum called Adventure Rider and its full of massive threads like those and they've become pretty worthless.

What's bad is when you do a seach and the results come back to a thread(s) with 1000 or more responses.

Internet forums are strange places. One trend I've seen is how they tend to bring out the narcissism in many. Its a bit of winky-measuring, or establishing the alpha-dog of the group. Many jockeying to see who the most knowledgeable is on any given subject. This forum seems to have a little less of the manhood-measuring than many other forums I've been on, but I have noticed the same thing you have in that there's a lot of people just ignoring what others have posted...not sure exactly which psychological phenomenon that is...

I tend to not have much to say to the guys with preset ideas.
Be it top end, coo specific or dedicated bottom feeders you already know what they want to read.

Help me find ----- threads by folks with known likes its pretty much a waste of time to suggest anything outside of that.
Unless it to drive up the post counts.

I won't ask those questions because there are no tool trucks, industrial tool places or GW outlets in Mexico where I live.
I don't buy online either.

So suggesting new SK or GW is equal to carving them from unicorn horns. I buy and use what sells locally, usually stuff most of you never see.

Except the near exact same stuff in another brand in the case of imports. In that who really cares the brand if it is good stuff.

I created a thread as a social experiment several years back just to see if it would take on a life of its own and thrive without my help.
It did within a month and has survived five crew changeovers remaining active. And it is useful and valid because it morphs a bit with the current members but has never strayed far from the first post.
Even the guys screaming "keep it on topic " cannot complain.

Its all about being flexible mentally and riding out the highs and lows without getting your shorts in a knot. Sooner or later it drifts back to 'regular' again.

That's definitely a calm and rational response

This forum is unique, but it does have some of the usual internet forum characteristics.

What it doesn't have is a lot of bickering, foul language and name calling. Thanks to the mods for that.

What it does have, is a lot of people with skills, who are willing too share their knowledge with others.

It is a bit of a social watering hole, especially in free parking.

I think part of the phenomenon of not acknowledging others posts very much, is related to winky-measuring. Instead of adding on to someones post, making one of your own, even if it is an exact copy of what's already been said, gives you a flag you can plant. BTW, my winky IS the biggest!

Readers do need to appraise each posters expertise, since we would all like to think we know it all. And in the race to be "The expert", we may overstep our knowledge.

You have your lurkers, your post count whores, your know it all's, your really do know it all's, your funny men, your doom and gloomers, your self righteous and your kind and helpful people. We're not all keyboard commandos, living in our mom's basement.

So we have the usual mix of people. And the usual mix of posts and threads and conversations.

All in all, I like it. Do miss some of the old timers though.

It already is called the 2017 Garage Sale Thread. :dunno:

This, and "Show us your wrenches" or "show us your ratchets" etc is not dated, and who gives a rats *** if the thread is over 1,000 posts. That's why it's the show your "***" thread. Would you want a new "show your ratchets thread" every year? wtf dunno:

The Vise thread has over 50k posts and over 8 MILLION views. That's one of, if not the best threads on GJ. I'm pretty sure I was searching google for vise info when I found this site, I know others have mentioned finding the site from monster threads popping up in searches. If you have a problem loading them, upgrade your dial up connection, there's lots of good info in the Show Your Threads.

would you rather have it return x threads named: show us your 2017 goobers, show us your 2018 goobers, show us your 2018 goobers, etc...

hit the radio button to show posts instead of threads.

or use google.

or use more search terms/multiple searches to narrow it down further.

it's all a **** shoot anyway, since we all use different vocabulary. Lot easier here though since we're not all acronym-izing everything like on some other forums...

Do an advanced search and it will give you the option to "show thread" or "show post" by keyword.

Or, When the search pull up a 1,000 post thread with your keyword, click on the "search this thread" link and it will show you every post with that keyword.
