I have tried a lot of stuff, I keep this on the seat of my pickup 24/7, really works good. Can tote it in somewhere if needed but usually remains there, don't have to open tool boxes for common things.

Would like to see more ideas. Im currently at a crossroads weather to try and make an over the counter tool "bag" work or to order a sheet of 1/8 aluminium and make what I want.

Need to be able to carry pretty much everything that would be in a well equiped electricians tote plus SAE and metric gearwrenches up to 3/4 & 19mm and SAE and metric sockets up to 15/16-24mm. Plus a drill bit index, tin snips, and files.

Pops made this one up for Elroy as a Christmas present several years ago. It's fully functional and quite handy.

Hope it gives you some additional ideas

ngk22r,

I'll try to post up a few tool totes I use in my landscape business. Probably different than most folks here on the GJ.

At any rate, this is a damn interesting and practical thread. I've already picked up about 10 good ideas. Let's keep the examples flowing...

ngk22r,

OK, here's a few totes I use in my landscape business, all three are indespensible.

Tote 1 -- 14" x 14" x 7" plastic crate for lubricants, penetrants, and critical tools/supplies, always in front seat of my work truck:

Tool Tote 2 -- 5gal bucket and bucket organizer for hand pruning and trimming tools. This tote rides in the truck bed with my other equipment:

Tote 3 -- Vintage wooden 34" x 8" x 13" site measurement and layout tote. This was originally made and used by my wifes grandfather (an old school carpenter). I've repurposed it for my own use.

mkdive,

I like your rig. Really well thought out, practical, and the right assortment of critical tools for your trade.:bowdown::bowdown:

Revoking my lurker status to contribute to this thread since I am looking for ideas as well. Mostly Sears & Lowe's sourced stuff for quick replacement if needed.

I think I'm going to make one myself that is bigger than the one I have that will have little casters on it so it would be like a floor level tool cart for when working under a car on a creeper

I was thinking of this . . .

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00002243C/?tag=atomicindus08-20

But not really for tools per se. More as a trunk organizer bag???

It seems hard to find a decent trunk bag to hold trip supplies/dog supplies/misc and limited tools/misc quick cleaning supplies like quick detailer and towels and such for spills etc.

I have seen mobile detailers have those in their trunks, and they love them!

I have several of the BucketBoss tool bags, they're quite nice. I've been using the one you mention to carry tools for work for over 5 years (through airplanes, car trunks, etc.) and it's still holding up perfectly.

BTW, in the hot deals thread, this place is having a sale on them:

Elroy, do you have approximate dimensions on your tote? I like the nice simple look of it.

ngk22r,

I like the vintage tool tote as well. The whole thing was made of scrap wood and was extremely strong and well designed. The tools that were originaly in it had dividers and supports so that no tool rubbed or touched another tool. It originally contained:
rip saw,
cross cut saw,
back saw,
flooring saw,
block plane,
drill brace
auger bits(8),
framing square,
level,
wood chisels(5),
files(3),
sharpening stones(2),
saw set,
plomb bob & string.

I don't know if you can see it, but there is one full width drawer in the bottom of the tote. The drawer stored the files, auger bits, chisels, stones, and saw set.

I've always wondered if my wife's grandfather got this tote right on the first try, or if he built several totes, with each one an improvement over the previous attempt.

I spose I could be neater but have really tuned that truck to the stuff I really need. I used to carry a lot more on it but pruned it down where most everything has a purpose or even multi uses. I have a full heavy duty service truck but can do about 99% of what I need with this one. A fair amount of things stuffed behind the seat too, the purple bag has a welding machine in it. Inverter on truck, dont have air comp on this one though. Battery impact has almost replaced the need for it.

sberry, I know how you feel. My wife use to hate to get in my shop truck because of all the junk on the seats and in the floor. It was a 95 Chev 1500W/T Sometimes I was afraid to open the passenger door because I didn't know what was trying to escape. Boost box wanted to escape once and I stopped it with the top of my foot. It's a work truck

This is one I carry on my wheelchair and keep beside my chair in the house. I'm always having to put together something, make little repairs on stuff inside and when on the back of my wheelchair if I see a little something at a swap meet that I have to disassemble before buying I can normally get it done out of this little tote box. It keeps me from having to get up or go to the garage or back to my vehicle to get a tool. I have a rack that goes on the back of my chair for it and a spare tire. If someone steals it really no big loss.

@Mkdive: Why do you need the 4 sizes of Crescents as well as the Knipex Cobras? Could you ditch one or two sizes of Crescents or even all of them in favor of the Knipex?

My pickup isn't really as big of a disaster site as it may seem, its pretty well organized and handy. As I get older I get more resourceful and can do a lot more with less. I do have a couple other heavier totes. The whole thing is one big toolbox. The crane truck has some simple hand tools on it, just enough to get by for the jobs I do, I take things back to the shop if I can and equipment is as work ready and service as it can be when I send it out.

No knipex.....I wish there was some hiding in there. :(

Yes I could carry less, but over the years I have found this was a good combo to have in the bag. I actually have 5-6 bags set up depending the job, Tele/datacom, plumbing, electrical, general etc.

My previous job required to always have anything and everything I would need on hand. Since then I have switched careers/industry and now I just amass more tools, not really needing to be so practical about carrying only what is needed. :headscrat

I have 3 or 4 of those red/black Craftsman ones. Two are aircraft detailing stuff, another is aircraft fluids & a mess of funnels & the other is tools.... seperate to the tools in my *go* box.. so some days there are 4 totes on the back seat of the truck & the *go* box in the bed....

Only use a tool tote when going to a junkyard. It consists of a 4L (1 Gal) bleach jug with a round hole cut out opposite the handle. Keeps the necessities in check...........vise grips, hammer, chisel, screw drivers and a few wrenches. If further tools are neede, I go back out and re-load.

Two of my totes in my work truck for in field repairs. Not much as most of the hand tools are in wrench rolls or blow molded cases.

One was suppose to be for electrical and the other for pliers, punches, files, Vortex sockets, small parts, etc. I think they both exploded and the fallout mixed up in each bag. Not as organized as I would like.

Probably ditch both of these if or when I buy a cheap service bodied truck.

I got this 18", 43 pocket CLC tote from Toolking.com model #1589. I'd been searching for a new tote for quick jobs around the house for a while, but none were satisfactory until I found this. Most had too few pockets or had pockets of one or two sizes. This has about 12 different size pockets and is well laid out for convenience and viewing your tools, plus it has a deep side for holding my drill and impact easily. I think what sold it though was the external clip for my tape measure. I'm forever misplacing mine and to always have a handy home for it is huge in reducing frustration when I'm working on a task. The tote is made of tough material with sturdy zippers. I think it was $29 on one of their deal-a-day sites.

Here's my " GO TO " tool tote for work . I'm really happy with it . I had to add some more pockets in the inside . I also like the heavy rubber on the bottom to . For years I had a electrician tool bag but it use to tip on me , and drove me mad .
