I bought this Baldor #500 on Ebay quite a while ago- I paid $180 plus $60 shipping.
I think it's from the late '50's.

I bought a 3-phase motor with the intention of hooking up a VFD to it for speed control - for variable speed.

Like most of these old grinders, it was missing the water pots, water trays and miter gauge.

Reading of others' experiences, I bought 2 water pots and 2 trays from the Harbor Freight reproduction. They fit pretty close.

I then bought a miter gauge from a guy who makes them for Dremel table saws on Ebay. It fits real nice.

Someone had given me a Teco FM-100 (older) VFD.

So the question for the experts is this-

How would YOU proceed to get this grinder working and in good operation?

Thanks!

Nelson

Here is mine. A Flott 0,8 hp 3 phase 400v model, 200x32 mm discs. Bought it pretty cheap en Ebay with one arbor worn down (worked loose and fell on disc, left one, fix slightly visible in pic). Welded/filled it up with TIG, fitted a new style CEE plug with new cable and except for some vibration it runs perfect. I think the grinder sat unused in someones basement for many many years. Got a cheap diamand dressing tool to get the unbalance out of the discs and hope i can get more use of it in the future.
Main reason i bought it, except for the great price, is that it matches my 1955 Flott drill press perfectly.

What would you say the value of this grinder would be today on the used tool market?
(Vintage Delta Grinder 1945) Post #46 by WWIIjeep Re: Show us Your Vintage Bench Grinders!!!!

In that condition--i.e., "plug and play" complete, with high-quality wheels and a single-phase motor--anywhere from $100 to $350 IMO. The lower end of the range for one that might need a little TLC and/or new wheels, and the upper end for one in the condition of that one. With the OEM cast-iron stand, add another $50 to $75.

The ones that are occasionally found for less than $100 usually are almost always missing one or more parts (end wheel covers, tool rests, etc.), or need new wheels, or need new bearings, or need replacement glass in the eye guards, or they're 3-phase instead of single-phase, or all of the above. Some of the parts can be hard to find--even on eBay--and are rarely cheap.

There's really nothing comparable being built today. The current crop of Baldor grinders can't match it, and the other former comparable--Wissota--stopped making grinders a few years ago (Wissota actually made some of the Delta-branded grinders of the 1980s-90s).

That old Delta will run circles around any Asian import grinder in terms of power, smoothness, and quiet operation, so one other way to look at the value of an older US-made industrial-quality grinder is simply compared to the brand new price of a similarly-sized import, and even if the asking price of the old grinder is higher than the price of a brand new import, the older grinder will likely be a better value in the long run.

I just got this one yesterday --- a little dirty --- but still has decals on the glass screens that says unbreakable glass.

Stamped in ink on the bottom says Nov 28 1966

WWIIjeep.... Thank you very much for the information. I have an opportunity to get a Delta exactly like your 1945. A friend, who owes me some money, has offered me his restored grinder to settle the score. This is why I was asking about the value. If I get it, I will post a photo. Thanks again.

Started the Refurb process on this GE bench grinder that I picked up on CL for $10. It worked but the wiring was shot and it was covered in grease and grime.

Soaked it down with some degreaser

Split it apart so I could access and replace the wiring.

Got primer on it. Should finish up this week. More pics to follow.

Hi Guys & Gals,
Here is a contender for the ugliest bench grinder award!! I picked this up last summer because it had a nice Black and Decker stand that I wanted for another grinder. It is a B-LINE grinder. I was going to just scrap it out since the cord's insulation is falling off and the tool rests are missing. But then after looking at it on my bench for so long I sort of felt sorry for it and plugged it in. ( I know... not safe when the wires are showing, but I had to see if it ran...) It still runs great and has lots of power. Then I discovered I have some tool rests from a block grinder I am scraping that fit perfect and replacing the cord is easy so I will add it to the "to be restored pile". I don't know anything about B-LINE but I saw a nice restored one on Vintage machine.org that looked really nice when finished.
Does anyone know anything about B-LINE??
Happy grinding,
Greg

Here are my bench grinders: Both Milwaukee - 7" V-121 and 8" 5051
Everything original on the V-121, except the tool arms and rests were for a Wissota E-7, oh and the lexan lenses.

It is a prehistoric, swedish 'handske' (glove) not allowed to install anymore. Caused lot's of injuries when the metall outer shell accidentally got in contact with 380 volt line. Wich makes me think it could be a cool thing to have in the coming retro style garage:scared:

Maybe fellow nordic GJers know if they were used also in other corners of Scandinavia, or Europe?

Have no pictures of the grinder on it's stand. Just bought it for future use.

My old Thor 6" I got in Pittsburgh yard sale some years ago. Repainted and replaced the bearings. Sometimes I have to spin it by hand to get it started. :)

Hi Magnusk750,
i think the swedish "handske" plug was for Sweden only (and luckyly so :scared:), here in Denmark we used to have these 3-phase plugs:
View media item 29601Available in standard grey or black, or "industrial" green/red (impact resistant). 380V/16A.
They are obsolete now, but still found in many homes and workshops...slowly being changed to CEE-standards.

View media item 29602Just to keep this "on-topic" - here´s a pic of the danish "kraft-stik" (power plug) on a danish made KEF grinder (Københavns Elektromotor Fabrik). Sorry to admit it, but it doesnt belong to me, it´s from an auction site...would love one, though.
KEF still exists, and still produces some of their grinders here in Denmark - they have also aquired the famous Swedish Arboga brand. You can read more about KEF and Arboga here...http://www.scantool-group.com/kef-motor/who-is-kef-motor.aspx...

Thanks for enligthing me on this subject. Arboga 308 and 312 are the grinders you are most likely to find used in Sweden. They have been basically the same since way back, at least 1950s and are plentiful but also sought after used. A good working one with all the rests and covers is about 2000-3000 kr (250-400$)

Just scored this one on the 'bay. Not exactly sure what brand (thinking blue point or dayton by the design of the lower body where the switch is. I've seen both with this style.) Paid $36.00. It's a 6".

If anyone can help ID I would appreciate it. The rivited ID tag is missing.
