Hi Michael, I can't read the S/N; that often has a date code embedded. can you type it out?

I think its made for M/F by someone else, and Wissota may be a candidate?

I’m leaning towards Doerr as the OEM.

Looking for some help. Trying to disassemble this craftsman grinder and I cannot get that metal plate off. Came right off the other side but this one it will not slide off.

Any tips, I’m thinking I may have to use my dremel with a cutting wheel but I’d rather not.

Basically it’s like it’s getting stuck on a lip but doesn’t matter if I pull from the top, bottom or sides, won’t budge, just kinda tilts and gets stuck.

I would spray some penetrant on it and use a pair of big pliers to give it a twist on the shaft. You can do that on the CM because it is not keyed like many other vintage grinders are. That should help work the penetrating oil where it will do it the most good. And then keep working it with the pliers.

It maybe stuck on a burr.

Can you move it back towards the grinder body any? If you can get it to move, try dressing the arbor shaft with a strip of fine grit crocus/emery cloth, 400 or so.

It will be difficult to find a proper replacement; it's worth the trouble to save it.

Our vintage brunch grinder; not sure of manuf's name; it looks like 'Thor Power Tools' at bottom of manuf's rivited spec ID plate, but not at top center.

There's also a strange white-powdery corrosion happening around the center (paper around arbor) area of each grinding wheel. What's causing that? Is that typical after they've sat unused for a period of time?

Prairie Tool co. belt drive bench grinder. Free at a sale i was at friday. Casting only marked "I W" or "1W". Missing tool rest or some kind of shields/covers. Can't find image online..

I had an old flat-belt grinder similar to that one!
It also didn't have shields/covers, But it had "S" shaped tool rests something like this picture.

The tool rests on the one I had were cast-iron with rounded edges & a recessed center section, They looked to be from a casting!

Picked this 10" Van Dorn 1HP 3PH pedestal grinder up from a on-line auction a while back I haven't had a chance to get it all cleaned up yet! But besides the shop/fresh appearance, It was pretty much plug & play.

Bench grinders from downunder-Australia

Just a couple of pictures of some vintage 1/3 hp Australian made bench grinders circa 1960. The grey one was my late fathers and has been in my life as long as I can remember (I’m 48). The green one I happened across recently in an estate sale and I couldn’t pass it up. It is the original finish from 60 years ago. Both were made by GMF electric motor company, sadly out of business since around 1980.

Does anyone know the value of a 397-19581 1/3hp? This has a cup diamond grinding wheel bolted onto the left side wheel. I have yet to see a pic of another like it so I'm curious. Ill send pic.

Some nice early GMF`s there. They certainly are a highly prized item.
Have had mine for about 25 years and I think it was about 20 years old then. Wish I had another one or two.

1/2HP, 415v. One day I`ll give it a clean up, paint and maybe some new bearings but while it is still is running well......

Hopefully this attempt will finally be successful and you can see the detail of the mechanism of an old D370 Black and Decker 5" grinder I picked up awhile ago. I'm a sucker for these old B&D metal body tools, especially the Made in England ones. Seems pretty well made considering the toylike dimensions of this unit. It should do ok for the light duty tasks I will use it for. I will probably just mount it to a block of wood and clamp it in the vise when I need it, since work table space is at a premium.

a 1950's Baldor 10" 1.5HP, 220V-3ph bought on ebay for $100 20 years ago. The problem was I was in AZ and it was in NY. My brother carved out a plastic milk crate, attached casters and a handle and brought it on a commercial flight as carry-on.

He kept the baldor stand and I fabbed a new one.

It is a beast of a grinder.

Dude, do yourself a favor and get a real grinder.

That poorly wired, stone on a motor with no guard or rest...It might 'work great' if you lived in a 3rd world country.

I may as well throw these on this thread. Both run smooth as butter but are eye candy in the collection as I have other grinders for daily users. 1942 and 1949 respectively.

Its been a while since I've been thinking about grinders and who made them so can any of you remind me who made Wissota? wasn't it related somehow to BALDOR or do tell?

this little 1/3 HP should clean up nicely and since i'm going to put on nyalox wheels or wire wheels it should sit nicely on my rolling toolbox.

Outlaw: thanks for referring me over to the Wissota thread cause Exmaxima saw my sharpener and said it was originally designed for chisels so I might come in handy. also I got your PM.

ALL: my broken glass shields have (or will soon) left the building so no longer available.

any other information on this grinder is much appreciated. It was in a bunch of stuff I bought from a friend that is moving out of state so I haven't actually heard it run yet, but guessing it will.

are these fairly easy to work on if I need to? if it runs and no strange noises i'll just wire wheel off all the paint, wipe on some BLO, and order some new wheels for it if I don't have any in a box here.

Thanks drives. The 42 has a coat of BLO on it. It sits exactly as it came to me. When I do remove paint, I've been using a citrus based stripper. I think I'm going to break down and buy a blast cabinet this spring to lessen my load of stripping non-machined parts.

I that that Wissota. Classy looking machine. I see those pop up around me from time to time and have a devil of a time resisting them.

ALL: how many of you have used these NYALOX wheels on your grinders that some of the members love and are talking about on the RUST REMOVAL THREAD?

I've got more than a few grinders so thinking this little Wissota might get a couple different grits of these NYALOX wheels which I hear are a bit spendy, BUT WORTH IT!

or should I buy some and put on one side of my bigger 3/4 HP baldor buffer cause as TIM says more power is nicer.
