I love flipping through this thread! Lots of cool projects every one, thanks for the reading material.

Here is a project I finished just before graduation. My school was donated this 12 L Cummins ISX and we needed a frame to hold it. It will eventually be in running condition and used by students in the lab for the diesel engine management class.
All welds were done using a Hobart*, .035 wire. All the material was reclaimed tubing from a no-longer-used platform for a Mustang Dyno (it is now mounted in the floor).
The last pic shows my "signature" done by spot welding dots together and then grinding them down with a flapdisc on an angle grinder.

Since I'm moving to Indiana and starting a new job soon it might be a while before I get to do any more welding. This project was my attempt to go out with a bang! It is also the largest thing I have ever built.

*edit* Hobart Beta MIG 200

Looks like your welder was a little underpowered for those big welds at the bell housing mount. Otherwise nice job

Yeah I for got to switch the output lead to the "high" lug. What you see on the top of those welds is the 4th pass, heat penetration looked ok from the backside. I'm not too worried about it coming loose.

....and she won't have to keep them in water! Nice work :rocker:

Thanks! That's high praise from you sir! Your thread is awesome.... I had a crazy Idea to make her a dozen for Xmas but she walked in the shop and caught me tonight so the surprise is gone... Kind of a good thing since just one took way too long to make.

One is just enough.. 12 would make it look like it takes a minute each to make, just like with the ladies, once you find the right one , you stop looking for others. Nice work!

You NEED and exhaust stack on the top half.

Yeah, I agree 10000%. I can't see how it properly smoked anything before:eyecrazy:.

Agreed, that why I call it a grill. It's been used as direct heat since it been built. It takes a little work to cook on, but I'm pretty use to it now. Once the mass of steel is heated up, it doesn't take too much to keep it consistent.I wish I had cash value of all the ribs that's been cooked on it.

I'm going to build a smoker, a indirect heat cooker hopefully this year, with a firebox and stack.

I figured you didnt smoke with it, and used it as a grill. It still would benefit greatly from an exhaust stack to get really good temp control, if you're so inclined.

It does have a exhaust, it's just aflap, over the hole. Between that and the flaps on the bottom near the charcoal/wood, it responds fairly well. When I built it, I had no clue to the science of the grill drafting, fire boxes , etc. I learned on a large direct heat grill that we cooked 60 lbs of meat at a time, and didn't kill over selves.
The grill I'm going to build will have have a plate under the grating, heat will flow under this and then over the top of the meat on the way out.
I'll make the intake and exhaust vents very close in tolerance, on my friends grill you can watch the temp respond almost right away.

Low and slow, throw some meat on, tinker in the shop and 4-5 hours later dinners ready.

my ongoing dash project, borrowing from chevy and ford late 40's to early 50's styling. 49 ford 5-in-1 speedometer gauge and clock. still needs alot of work but it'll get there....(center seat divider/cupholder and trans hump are not welded in yet and are just sitting there a little crooked in that picture)

how funny my daughter wants me to make her a flower.

Hahaha... Do it... I don't have any kids yet but anytime I can make something for the wife whether it be a coffee table or shoe rack etc. It helps to justify a tool purchases at a later date. "Sure babe you like that jewelry box from Pinterest? I can make it, no problem but I'm going to need some snap-on wrenches and possibly another wilton vise to make it"

Stole the idea from HAMB. Made with SBC rocker arms, spoons and rebar.

Those turned out great!

Speaking of kids, my son wanted a shelf to hold his water and book up in his bunk bed. So we did the project together. Today, he did a presentation to his kindergarten class about it. These were the pictures he showed -- along with metal shavings, a cut section of steel and the shelf itself.

The kid is welding in kindergarten!? Do you know how pretty my welding beads would be by now if my dad taught me that stuff early!? Very cool Jack.

Built this on company time with company steel and laser cut pieces.

A normal roller does me no good, I need space for stuff that doesn't go in drawers. Was going to paint it red but decided blue as it could then be under the premise of it could go anywhere in the plant.

Frame is 2 x 2 by 8th angle and the sides and doors are what we had available, a little less than 14 gauge thick 0.075. 3/4 inch plate as the front surface, my vice is on my workbench but if I ever want to put it on here I can.

This stays back in the shop while the next picture rolls around the 150k foot facility. I am capital maintenance at the plant and my job consists of solutions that usually involve a lot of fab work.

This is my work area and massive 3 1/2' x 7" by 6 inches thick fab table along with a project.

I love my job!

notabmw1,
We're going to need more pics…………
Love'n that Minor.

What do you want to see pictures of? I am mainly into Classic Mini's, probably had over 90 through the garage last 3 years. When my Pops was looking for a hotrod, I thought, man I could build him a Semi-Pro Street Moggy. Been working on it for to long, started right before my daughter was born. She just turned 2. It really is a mutt, I call it hotrodding, but hotrodders bust my balls for putting a V6 in it. Mind you this car weighs in at 1800lbs... so I think it will be "fine".

It has a 86 Toyota Truck frame, Toyota power disc brakes up front, Ford Exploder 8.8 narrowed 9", 16x8 with some meats on it on the back, 15x6 up front I believe. 95 Camaro 3.4 Fuel Injected Motor with some goodies. VW Scirocco Drag Radiator. I fabricated the air suspension on it years ago, in 2 weeks I am redoing it all going to coilovers...

My Clubby has a 1098 that I am fabricating a MR2 supercharger on it over the winter. That I fabricated a one off air suspension, and just changed to coilovers... just because. I like trying new stuff.

Notabmw1, I'm digging that Morris, I built one about 50 years ago. It was probably one of the most fun cars I've ever owned.
Thanks for popping that memory out of my head.
