One last one for the night.

I have a 1970 Nova that I am practicing my metal shaping skills on. I am grafting taillights from a 1969 Camaro onto the Nova.

This is an in process picture of a stand I am making for my PM1340GT lathe. It was a test fit up to ensure that the bolt holes line up before I did a final weld on the 2 mounting plates. I used 2x2x.120 wall tubing for the bulk of the construction and 12 gage for the filler plates and shelf's. The plan is to do a skim coat of bondo before painting so the outside of the stand is smooth. The large opening is for a 44" HF tool box (top box) that has the lid removed.

So is the top of the HF box going to be used as a catch tray? Post it up when you are done, it looks very cool.

What did you use for the top anvil? Nice job!!!

That is a 10"x4 caster that has been trued,it is a pain to install due to the tapered bearings.I will have Hoosier make me a new top wheel when I can afford it.Have Joes lower dies ,want to make upper wheel changes faster,as I use a Go-kart tire upper sometimes.

Thanks.

The chip tray and backsplash weren't mounted as I was just checking the bolt spacing before final welding the mount plates. This earlier mockup shows the chip pan and tool box.

I really like your shop. It looks very well appointed. Give us a photo walk-through sometime!

I have one of those 18"x36" metal cabinets in the corner of my welding area. I had a bunch of small pieces of bar stock and tubing scattered on one shelf that I use for shimming and spacing stuff for welding. I wanted something to contain all of it and free up some space so I made a bin out of 16 ga. I cut it out of one piece, fold it up, and welded it together. It worked out well enough I think I'm going to make several more.

I also built a set of heavy duty replacement grapple jaws for a branch manager grapple. This is the 4th bent set that I've seen. I'm thinking about making and selling these as an aftermarket upgrade. The factory ones don't have teeth either.

Dan, the new lathe bench is turning out very nice. I've been thinking of doing the same thing to mine, although my 1340 is not having any vibration or shaking issues, I merely want more storage and rather than modifying my existing stand/bench, I thought I would just start from scratch.

Yep, that is exactly what I was looking at doing. Just out of curiosity, what box did you end up using? Looks like the exact proportion and fit I am after as well.

I like the shop crane mod! I wish I had room for one that size.

I used a HF 44" top box. I removed the lid, just attached with a bunch of rivets, and cut off the lip so it would have a clean line when installed in the stand. That box will not fit between the two columns on the factory stand, another reason I went with a custom build. I did a quick search looking for a tool box that would work with the factory stand and didn't find anything. Lista would make a custom width box but that was too expensive for me.

The HF box dimensions are 41 3/8 X 19 1/4" X 17 1/2" after removing the lid and trimming the lip.

Dan,
I can cut out more of them that way you would only have to bend and weld. Send me a PM if you're interested. This one is 6x6x15 but I could do whatever size you want.

I had to do that to lift my first bench top mill. The legs were widened to clear the stand I built for that. I use the hell out of that lift but it does take up a bit of space.

Mike,

I have the design modeled on Solidworks if you want a copy. Also, if you have an idea for a easy to make door for the storage area on the left let me know.

Dan, I would love a copy of the plans for the stand. I'll shoot you my email if you don't mind.

As for the door, I was thinking some 1/2" square tube with mitered corners and then some sheet metal backing it with a nice heavy piano hinge. Just some stuff I have kicking around in my scrap pile. For latching I was just going to make a simple twist lock, similar to the factory stand.

What are you going to do with your factory stand? Put it up for sale on your local CL or what? I was wondering if there would even be any interest in it or not.

Mike.

Started on my bandsaw stand.

Found some thin wall 1.5 x 3.5 tubing for cheap ... about $20 for it all. Took me a few passes to get the welder set up, but looks ok now. Started out to hot, then to much wire ... ended up at the diagram settings.

Forgot how much fun this could be .... :)

Second photo ... ran out of wire, so had to start midway.

Nice clean cuts on the parts, just a friendly tip, clean the joints, make them bright, wipe down with Acetone. You will notice a difference in the welding ...

Another tip, if you're not familiar with what settings to use for a particular metal thickness, use some scrap of same size to get the settings right before starting on the project.

I don't know what he's using, but if you want to save some money and do it faster than with a hole saw, watch this video:

This guy builds beautiful cages and does not use any kind of dedicated notcher.

Thanks, I just spent a couple of hours watching his various videos. As if I needed something else to take up my time. Just kidding, it was actually very informative!

Not an exciting project, but a useful one. I took my scrap metal barrel to the scrap yard yesterday, and while the barrel is empty I decided to make a few improvements. I normally have the barrel sitting on a Harbor Freight moving cart so that the barrel is mobile. Also, I have to lift the barrel into the truck by hand.

So, I had some 2x3-11ga. cutoffs in the scrap pile, and 4 old casters on the shelf as well. I wanted to add casters to the drum and I want to be able to lift the drum with either my loader with forks or by an overhead lift. So, my forks go down to 16" width and that was easily achievable with the 2x3's. And I added some 2"x11ga. flat bar to the top of the drum on either side. I then drilled some 7/8" holes so that I can run a clevis to be able to use a lifting strap.

Again, nothing tremendous but a nice little project to make life easier.

I don't post very often but i thought i would this time. i wanted to surprise my wife with custom handrails for the front steps on our new house. first i needed an anvil but i didn't have the extra cash to buy a real one so i fabricated one that would serve my purpose.

Then i stated heating and bending the 1.5x.5" bar stock to match my pattern for the top rail. all the center pieces are bent .5" square stock.
