Anybody want to see how my rusty old brain works? This is related to my last post. If you can make out what I'm thinking here, welcome to the ranks of the old and demented school (those of us who learned to think with a pencil) :)

PCustoms: Mostly, for when the one you have is "too thick" on the end but otherwise the "perfect" size for a specific job. It's always been difficult for me to get the angles even on both sides so that the resulting bit is not the same thickness side to side and thus not of the ideal geometry. Also, for when a favorite driver is borrowed and misused and you want to restore it. I know, the second problem could be remedied by just buying another tool but the first issue can only be solved by grinding it yourself.

I've got a relatively young mind and I make similar doodles...

Really nice looking welds, what machine are you using for the tig welds? I've tried to get a puddle that big with my Syncrowave 250 and something is no-go. It could definitely be me but I'm hedging towards the machine can't put out enough amps...

@ kkroger: how did you generate the G-code for the super-bee? Is it a CAM processor or did you manually code it from a 2D wireframe. Just curious :)
Thanks! that's odd I use Syncrowave 250s at work. I think all of these pics were with the 250. I found leaving the balance on 6 works best and just size up your tungsten if it starts flickering.

Not the OP, but I've welded lots of heavy aluminum with older transformer machines. Try some 75/25 helium mix. It really adds a lot of heat. Preheating can also help a lot.
We regularly repair 1" plus thick aluminum plate. Bought a Dynasty 350 last year. No more preheating required. Inverters really are the way to go for aluminum

Converted a tri-axle leaf sprung trailer to a tandem axle with a 3rd air lift tag axle. Notched the frame 18” and reinforced from in front of notch back to beaver tail. Doing this allows for 9k more gvwr to allow for hauling a track hoe.

I started on a cart or dolly for my deionized filtration system yesterday. I’ve been researching and waffling on a system for a few years now as it generally takes me around 2-1/2 hours to wash and chamois my coach. I hope to be able to more than cut that in half. I finally pulled the trigger on the Pro 100 tank/system from DI Rinse.
e0f3e29433be9f2be9acfd63c8f866df.jpg

The tank measures 9” in diameter. I had some 1-1/4” x .095” DOM tubing left over from a previous project and my 1-1/4” die is a 4-1/2” centerline radius so that should be perfect.
44321379e01fad9ef7d1e0d13a3eb221.jpg

Next I decided to bend up another 180-degree hoop in which will go up and back down to the bottom hoop. Thus will allow the tank to actually nestle back into it and merely need a strap to secure it.
74e3c8d4fdb37eac46e6d53cecaabf50.jpg

Next to the lathe in which to start on the axle assembly.
048d2e8730a98c4e2664a2b121cd898f.jpg

Im making a couple of tube adapters in which will be welded into another piece of 1-1/4” tube that will be botched and welded to the back of the bottom hoop where the tank will rest.

Parting the tube adapter off.

Chamfering to allow void or channel for weld after pressing into tube.

Tube adapters complete.

Test fit into tube.
02decdbe8c9e102f2fd3c2380d43460f.jpg

I then used a couple of 1/2”-13 x 3” bolts through the tube adapters and the heads welded on the inside on the adapters and welded the adapters into the tube using my MK Products weld positioner and TIG arm rest.
113e737eef149b4e3bf91ef553aab77b.jpg

Axle then clamped and welded to the lower hoop.

Thanks for looking.

How does losing an axle gain you more capacity? Does a tag axle carry that much??

It’s all about axle spacing and “bridging” weight on the road. The axles are already rated for 22k pounds each. A typical tri-axle trailer with axle spacing less than 9’ overall can only be licensed for 42k here in MN. If you spread the axles out to 9’1” it allows you 51k. This trailer originally had 3 leaf sprung axles with an axle spacing of 8’. Removing the front axle and adding the 3rd air lift tag axle with wider spacing allows more LEGAL weight and also allows you to lift an axle when running empty.

I attached the chart that shows how much axle spacing affects load capacity.

Cool ....thanks for the info. Makes sense on the spacing, for load distribution.

How do you shape the metal? That's definitely a skill I'd like to acquire. If there's a term/name associated with forming metal that way let me know what it's called and I'l look at you-tube videos until I'm educated enough to ask a more specific question. Thanks!

Built a welding tool holder over the past couple of days. Got the idea from the product that SWAG sells. Made a mount for my welder cart and my portable welding table. Build details in the link in my signature.

We cut the shape, took it to a sand bag & with a hammer dent it in to a basic curve. Then on to the english wheel where you smooth out the dents & complete the curves.

It was my first time using a wheel, very rewarding!

Hi Max,

I have appreciated viewing your excellent work via your posts at Welding Web, along with your YouTube vids - welcome back to GJ!

I have been meaning to ask - how much aluminum do you guys go through a month? Are you next door to a Alcoa smelting operation? :)

Minion potted plant holder. It's 3' tall with a 12" ring for pot. I made a 8" drop on insert for a smaller pot. The minion is removalable too.

Ok, you know you have a cool shop when you can say I am working on a F4D Skyray .......!

Thank you...just doing a little volunteer project for the Minnesota Air National Guard Museum. A buddy of mine volunteers there and asked me to help them out.

What’s the story on the F-4? I see it has a Mig kill.

Not sure what the story is behind the Phantom. I know the plane was retired and the Air Guard Museum was able to get it. Somebody donated the Trailer and a Crane to help dismantle it and mount it on the trailer.

The Mig kill was done by another plane but they added the sticker to this one as I understand it.

I just wonder what the neighbors were thinking when this thing rolled down my driveway.

I have had a few people stop in and their jaws hit the floor when they see this thing. I tell them I am rebuilding it to go Prairie Dog Hunting.

Added some tubing and gussets to my SXS frame. Just some added insurance in case of a "woops" when out riding. These are known to be weak in this area and a bent frame usually means total replacement.

Nice mods Dan. That should help gusset the tubing quite a bit.
