So I just picked up my second Workmate by Black and Decker. This is the one with the cast aluminum upper frame. A little rust on the steel legs but it has the plywood top. My other one is all steel. Thought it was missing the little plastic parts, but they were inserted in the holes in the top from below. Got this one for $20. Says Type 2 on the underside of the top.

Ron Hickman, the designer of the Lotus Elan, was the inventor. A very handy device and there have been a number of versions.

I'm thinking about mods for it.
Add on jaws with ruler edge and fluorescent tape for handles and levers. Rubber mat for the step. Something to make it taller (I'm 6-3). Bench hook and shooting board. Hold fast. What else?

I've got three now, my original black steel one, and two with the aluminum upper structure. I've never seen one of the original all-aluminum ones.....

I need to hurry up now. I've got a 550 I just cut the aluminum to make a new top for yesterday. I'll post up a pic when it's done.

Jawhorse - never sure about all the copies.
I like the original invented by Triton Tools - Superjaws.
Either way with a ton of clamping pressure mine gets used all the time.
As does my poor mans copy of a workmate :)

I found a Workmate at the metal dump at the lake. Top is in rough shape and missing a crank. It will not unfold but I will use some penetrating oil and try not to force it to much. Don’t know much about them and have never used one before.
