Crowntop badge on the lid. Patent number (2,269,637) on the inside (for an "automatic self-positioning drill case") dates to January 13, 1942. I'm guessing it was originally black. No idea how they even got the ridiculously thin coat of red on the interior.

I found a fairly complete Crown drill bit set today but the plastic hinge is toast. I’ll sharpen and transfer the bits into a better box.

A rainy day project was to go through the Crown sets and transfer the best sharp bits into the best boxes. I took a few minutes to sharpen any dull bits with the Drill Doctor.

I picked this up when I was moving my son to Milwaukee a few years ago. After we moved him in, my truck was empty so of course I went right to Craigslist to see what I could find before driving back to Dallas. Sure enough, no shortage of vintage Craftsman stuff anywhere near Chicago. It wasn't until I got it home that I realized the drawers were not only filled with Crown accessories for the RAS, but they were all lined with The Milwaukee Journal from January 1971 - including articles on Richard Nixon. One of the things I really enjoy about collecting vintage tool cabinets is the varied and interesting things I find in them. This saw w/cabinet is also featured in a centerfold spread in the 1960-61 Craftsman Tool Catalog. This guy also came with a really nice 50s era Craftsman work light attached to it.

That’s one heck of a find! It’s a total time warp, especially with the news papers and the new tools in the drawers in boxes!

Smaller than the designated sizing says. Not in the shop to measure tho now. As they are though, it would allow the bit to rest on the base of the spade, and I doubt designers would have it do that, but not sure either. I'll slide one in and get a pic to better describe that next trip to the shop

Brace drill holder is my guess. They used to come with little caps on top, usually missing.

That would make sense also, because the hole in the bottom plate probably won't let the square drive end go through. I'll try it with some of my craftsman brace bits to display later

Snagged this 10 drawer upper this weekend, it's missing the tote but I stole the one out of a 6 drawer I have. I've been searching for a few years for one to go on top of my 8 drawer roller so pretty happy with this find. Just needs a little maintenance and it'll be good to go.

I seem to always pick up =v= tools at sales so I now have put two cobbled together sets of 3/8” drive tools together. The carry boxes are Crown logo but may have originally come with 1/2” drive tools Here is the first set that I’ve added to over time.
genog is sending me the missing 11/16” deep socket in a trade.

My guess is that it is for the 1/2" deep set with an L handle. I can measure the Heritage one I have to check dimensions. Size isn't listed in the catalog, the 1/2" shallows w/breaker bar is listed at only 3 11/16. The only other possibility would be the master 1/4" set, as it comes with a 14" extension (but no size box is listed). Pics of both listed below.

I thought it might be the 13 piece set also, but I just measured my Heritage version at 12-3/4" x 4-1/4" x 1-5/8".

Your blade guide is on backwards. You should be pushing your middle against the guide.

Per request here are some measurements for the big 1/4 set that I just picked up. Pics make it kinda hard to read the measurements but best I can tell it is 15&5/8 x 5&1/4 x 1&7/8 or so. That’s measured to the “lip”. Box doesn’t quite latch all the way so depth may be closer to 1&3/4. Logo is embossed, no sticker although the box is roached so maybe there was one originally…

I wish the plastic insert on this one wasn't so destroyed. Plus there are owners marks on every single piece so I'm sure I won't get that much for it. But good to know, appreciate it!

^ yours appears to not be in as good condition as that one that sold on ebay, which was in cherry shape. apparently that's something of an oddball kit with all those pieces in it - most likely worth trying to piece back together if youre intent is to flip it - even with owner marks.

I found this small file in a restore store. L believe it could be used for filing ignition points. Am I wrong in what it was designed for?
