Bought at Lowes to put in my small toolkit for my truck. Was immediately disappointed with the rather large (at least .002") gap at the tips. Not really sure what is normal with knife and anvil style cutting edges :dunno:.

I have several pair of the Greenlee brand (Taiwan made) same pliers (sharpend edge with anvil other side) and I just went down and checked and all lined up with no gap when gently closed and held up to the light like you show.

Huh.

I would exchange them. they will not work as well with a gap.
+1

A spike would remain, and the wire bent back and forth to separate the two pieces. Remaining uncut insulation would be a problem too, and if smaller gauges were being cut, may not cut at all (i.e. say 26AWG and smaller).

Return them. The gap is exactly backwards. You want cutting edges to meet at the tip and gradually, ever so slightly separate so that as the tips wear, the rest of the cutting area meet.

Definitely going to return or exchange them depending on whether or not Lowes has more in stock when I go (these where the last pair).

probably none, to me the student sets are kinda priced high and it leaves you with weird things like a single pry bars or a single adjustable wrenches as pictured, thats over 4k right there and id agree its the master tech starter thru the student discount

Thanks RobertMo. I figured it was a student discount and a std set but was curious as to the price. If that cost $4,000 or more , the loud snap you just heard was my ******** slammin' shut.

Fark that's a load of debt to take on as a student.

Yea I think Robert is correct on this one. Either way dude has a very very very good starting set that will last him many many many years to come for his trade. Probably will make 20 times that in wages, and all he needs now is a big fat harbor freight box to keep it all in :lol_hitti :lol_hitti

Nice pick up on the set.

That's a beautiful Snap on set.

However, it's not very realistic for a student set for someone entering the auto repair field.
Entry level techs do lube, tires, and quick lane type stuff. There's No impact wrench, no torque sticks, flip sockets, no lube tools. I didn't even see a tire pressure gauge/inflator. How's the new tech going to get wheels off and on?

It is a beautiful set even though it might not be the most practical one.

Nice purchase, now get em dirty!!!

Yes those are the student sets, I am grateful to have been able to get them. I'm not trying to show off I figured all of it was too pretty not to post though!
