New year, new tools. My first purchases of the year, the Astro sliding hammer pressure pliers, were stupidly expensive on Amazon.es €189, $207 so I decided to look on Amazon.com I ended up buying the Astro and Powerbuilt after taxes and customs the price for both It was about €150, $161. some Knipex pliers and a set of Milwaukee screwdrivers (you can never have too many screwdrivers).

Why did you buy both pullers? Do they have different features / capabilities?

All my gedore stuff is rough around the edges compared to anything else I own but all feel very solid. The Gedore red range is nicely finished , but has a 5 year warranty rather than the usual lifetime warranty on the regular Gedore stuff.
I find that rough no nonsense " tools are tough and not pretty " way of doing things by Gedore somehwhat reassuring.

One thing I can't stand , and that is the Husky set I bought when I 1st got to the US , all shiny and chromed but all the 3/8 and 1/2 sockets lack any sort of constancy as some look like they've sagged after being forged ,they all fit differently with the one 3/8 socket so sagged it doesn't allow the ratchet to lock it in place and now I'm starting to see some snaking under the chrome so I'm guess when I chip some of it off I'm going to have a rusty surprise. They all looked so good and nicely finished until I looked that them closely.
I can't wait to be reacquainted with my Gedore wrenches when I bring them back with me from my trip back SA later this year. The separation anxiety from my tools has been real.

Good day,

I agree with you on Gedore.

A little rough around the edges, but rugged and strong and no-nonsense.

Does Gedore still forge in S Africa?

Thank you for the feedback and answering my questions. Because of your post I started a search and some of the ones I saw showed the heating element on the bottom of the foot, one other was the toes area only (which made sense) as you said. Some comments said that one can feel the elements (not good). I will keep searching. Thanks again for sharing 😊

Another option for very warm socks, no batteries required:

Prices may appear insane*, but check out the reviews. A lot of happy Alaskans, elk hunters, etc.
Their thickest/warmest at this time of year may be sold out. (There is only so much bison down available. And the animals are not cooperative with the idea of shearing.) I'm a big fan of the their mid-weight Kenai socks lately.

Also, people wear them for days at a time before odor starts. Wool can be good that way.

Good information. When I first googled heated socks I found these:

Wow, they are expensive !

Wow! Downhill skiers (and mountain climbers?) really do spend some money.

For that kind of price, you might just get some really warm boots in the first place. I've read of people being very happy working outside in these:

(They are the furthest thing from a steel toed boot that could ever be made, though. A big, mushy moccasin, with a boiled wool liner, moose suede and canvas for breathability.)

They do still forge in SA , new Germany in KwaZulu-Natal. I think my metric wrenches were forged in SA while my SAE were forged in Germany. I can't really tell the difference besides the wrenches saying " Germany " or " SA "
I think my gedore socket sets were forged in SA too as there is a sticker in English and Afrikaans advising the ratchet to be rinsed in petrol from time to time but other than that, no other markings as far as I can tell.

Late yesterday, I ordered 4 fire blankets from AMAZON. Amazon suggested that my order was early enough to be delivered by 11:30h today. Well, the order was late. The delivery landed on our porch at 11:35h.
I watched a You Tube video and advertisement for fire blanket action, yesterday. We have a few fire extinguishers, well placed. If an extinguisher is discharged there will be an expensive post fire cleanup. I bought 4 blankets for about $50 including shipping. A proper clean-up could top $1500. I thought I saw MADE IN CANADA?? Oh Well. Maybe the spelling has changed???

Or maybe China bought Canada.

They really feel the same, maybe they came from the same factory. The price was the same so I decided to try both (you know you can never have too few tools).

Thanks. Thought I was missing something. They certainly look pretty similar in your unboxed pic!

Stopped by an estate sale on the way home today. They advertised ‘a garage full of tools.’ Well, there wasn’t much there, but I did pick up this Crescent wrench and a small Stanley tape measure that’s in like new shape. The Crestoloy needs a bit of TLC. I grew up a few miles from the Crescent factory and I have dozens and dozens of them. I still pick ‘em up whenever I find them!!

I'm not a Harbor Freight guy, but I was bored this morning. Picked up a few small things.IMG_7517.jpeg

That tall Braun light is fantastic! I have several, and bought more 18650 batteries and a charger for them.

A little tip I learned from the fine print of Mag-Lite directions long ago: a little bit of Vaseline petroleum jelly on the threads helps a lot. (If you're swapping batteries.)

The magnet bars are fairly priced, too. Everybody on Amazon wants to sell you too many at once.

IMG_7019.jpegIMG_7020.jpegMetric tap and die set from Matco. Great quality in my opinion. He never has the metric ones so when he finally did I got it. The 5 years I’ve been in the field I’ve managed to get by with just a retreading set and sometimes I’d borrow a tap or die but rarely but good to have my own. Especially since I’ve now started doing very in depth engine work.
did we already establish this appears to be a more complete/comprehensive Astro set? Japanese steel, patented ratcheting handle...

Couldn’t decide so I got them all. My dealer threw in the F100 “free” and the screwdriver and prybars.

Does your FHF100 have the indentation on the on the other side of the grip for your thumb to go into?

The previous generation soft grips like on the FHF80 had that indentation on the underneath side of the grip.

Ares 20003 - 7.5in Multi Purpose Cutter

Showed up in the Amazon Hot Deals thread. Clone of the Felco C7s. Even if not as nice of steel for 1/6th the price they seem like a nice purchase. Just tested them on some cable I had laying around and they cut it like butter.
