For typical ratcheting wrenches (not square drive socket wrenches) they are not sealed so well and you can soak the ratchet end from time to time in light oil. People advocate automatic transmission fluid for this. It is easy to do, and if you do this every now and then, it is probably not necessary to take them apart and clean and lube. You can also do the same thing with square drive socket wrenches that might be a pain to open.

The main problem is some types of ATF smell horrible. But probably most any light lubricant or lubricant/cleaner mix like WD40 can work.
I like Marvel Mystery Oil for this application. Or 50:50 ATF if I feel frugal. Synthetic ATF is supposed to work a little better due to smaller molecules, but I'm no sort of chemist.

IMG_8074.jpegIMG_8075.jpegCouple single sockets from Napa. They don’t have sets at mine. I wish they did though cause I want a complete set of 6 point 1/2 sockets for the house. I like auto parts store tools the best. Typical Napa experience in my area ghost town with no help and they act like your a burden unless your a commercial customer. I only bought these because I don’t have 6 points and I use these on a lot of stuff at home.

Why not just buy a set online?

IMG_8076.jpegFound this NOS Duralast socket at an Auto Zone way in the hood lol. I’ve only ever been in there one other time. Since it’s just me and dad this weekend we are going to all the ones we rarely go to. I picked this up strictly because it’s old and made in Taiwan lol. I rarely use 13mm because I don’t hardly work on anything that uses it but I wanted it lol. It drives me crazy when they had these because blue is normally metric and red is normally standard. I hate when brands switch it around.

Easy fix:

I like in store shopping best but online can be the last resort. Napa website is really hard to use for tools though because its not specific.

I feel the same way, but when the local stores don't have what I need, I jump online.

I make it a point to stop at the "Habitat for Humanity" store when I go up to see Mom in Sequim. They always have something I just can't live without. This last trip it was this lovely Timex watch:
Fire Engine Timex 021428.jpg
$10 bucks for the fire engine with the watch. $8 for a new battery to get it working. C'est la vie.
Fiskars pruners and Chinese Stanley pruners 021724.jpg
Mom was having trouble chopping the ends off of some carnations for a flower arrangement so I picked up this little pair of Fiskars at the local "Coastal" hardware store and brought her Chinese-made Stanleys home and put a new edge on them.

The real find, though, was this little gem from our friends at "MegaPro":
MegaPro 4-way screwdriver 021424 01.jpg
MegaPro 4-way screwdriver
MegaPro 4-way screwdriver 021424 02.jpg
MegaPro 4-way screwdriver
MegaPro 4-way screwdriver 021424 03.jpg
MegaPro 4-way screwdriver shows what people who THINK do:
They put a window at the end of the cap so you already know which bit you're grabbing.

Yes, I bought two. Gave one to a buddy. He noted the larger Phillips is the PERFECT size for removing hard drives from computers.

YMMV

IMG_8080.jpegWent to another Auto Zone to see if there was any clearance specials as sometimes they have different stuff on clearance. Nothing but decided to get a new pick set as I busted one of my Harbor Freight ones earlier today working on dad’s truck so instead of warrantying them because they are junk anyway I just bought these. Got more than 4 and they were only I think $9.99. Love Duralast stuff too lol.

Ya know Blake as much as you hang out at autozone looking for deals. You’re actually lucky you’re far too young to have ever been exposed to the sears tool area in their heyday. It’d have ruined you for life like it did the rest of us old dudes. 😉

I know I missed that haha. Believe me though when I heard Sears was closing I was the last one in the store on the last day buying everything. Of course at that point it was Chinese stuff some decent and some terrible. I remember going with my dad in the early 2000s but he would not buy much as it was too expensive lol.

On this rainy day, the wife and I took a trip to Roanoke, VA to visit some antique stores.. ended up with a few tools! The Proto and Wilton 6" clamps were $12, only the Proto is stamped USA though. Not sure the manufacturer on the 3/8" ratcheting handle?.. but I hadn't seen one before so it came home too. The Gearwrench serpentine set was only $23, ~$60 new, and looks to never have been used. Snagged the Heller Brothers Masterwrench as it looked cool and could be handy!

I miss those days! ....

Me & my buddy would go to Sears every Sat just to see what might have been new. We often left buying something we really didn't need.

And on Sundays we would go to Fry's Electronics (sale day was on Sundays).

What antique stores? I was at the Roanoke Antique Mall today. If you seen a guy walking around with a stack of DVD that was me lol. Beard, glasses and a black and blue Matco hat.

I have a set of Craftsmans, bought at Sears in the 2000s. The picks keep pulling out of the handles. It drives me bonkers (and yes, apparently I'm too cheap and stupid not to just throw them away and spend $10 on new ones)...

I'll be interested in hearing how this performs for ABS bleeds.

Spoiler alert. Despite the Amazon page listing it as having the ability to SAS calibration and ABS bleeding, it most certainly does not. The instruction manual that it came with even confirmed this. It’s getting returned, and I’ll better research an alternative.

I missed you then haha. I was at the Auto Zone across the street at that time lol. Charlottes Web is an awesome store. Haven’t been to Black Dog Salvage in a long time.

IMG_8088.jpegIMG_8089.jpegSome clearance items from Advance Auto. Didn’t need any of it lol 😂. But I like tools. Guy was glad to sell all of them he said corporate has been on them about getting all of this brand cleaned out of the store for the past few years and they found more in the back. They had a few more too but I didn’t get them as they weren’t on clearance enough. The set was $10. The sockets were like $2-$3 each and the wrench was $2.45. You know I can’t pass up a good deal lol. I probably shouldn’t have because I know this will set in one of my many totes of tools not getting used lol. Oh well haha.

how about you try some glue, epoxy or "natural adhesive" to keep the picks in the handle?

I've t'd it up to the pick and natural adhesive part advice. The entire video is hilarious and tool/home improvement related

I do remember that! One of the best shows, ever!

Mike
I've watched some other skits they've had via youtube in the last few years to reminisce. Absolutely hilarious and no way could they be made today.

Political correctness, what's that? Well, watch In Living Color and Married with Children . The opposite of what's in those shows is PC.
