It was de-gloved. Trust me, I was there!

That pic is after they snipped off the 3/8” of protruding bone.

I thought I’d spare you the before picture - now that is “graphic”.
As National Ski Patrol for most of a decade, I had to deal with a couple of de-gloving incidents. The worst was when a fellow caught his wedding ring on the lift while debarking. He was able to get the skin re-gloved and just has a nasty scar to show for it. He wears his ring on a necklace now.

I guess after twenty-eight years of working out of this shop, I have the tools I really need to build, fix and maintain our equipment.

But I still lust... and if I see a cool tool at a sale, I'll buy it if I can justify it in the least bit ;)

That is part of the reason I switched to a silicon ring ... I made the decision to get one but never did till I got stung on the finger. It took the guys at work 45 minutes to get it off my finger.

Got stubbies ?
I do - a set of GW flex ratcheting stubbies.
Look up a few posts -- tis plain, you need some French wrench-pipes next!
I can't say I didn't look at those and go hmmmm... fVdSZS.gif (but I shall resist...)
I constantly tell myself that, but always end up buying more. It's like a sickness I'm trying desperately to control.
I've done that on both of these sets in the past, but recently had three different projects where these would have kept me moving (starter, and two different suspension tasks...). At 40% off, I don't mind putting them in my kit for the next time(s).

I try to be needs driven. Sometimes this place or a guy like Rob Siegel (the "hack-mechanic" in the vintage BMW world) will show me something I grab knowing it will help keep me out of the ditch (crows feet are a good example, as are the long ratcheting flex head Icon/Mountain wrenches), other other times it's inspired when I run myself into a wall. I did manage to figure out the starter bolt and the ball joint nut that sent me into a temporary tailspin, but the offset was a bigger gap in my kit than I realized, and the S-wrenches are going to be a 'nice to have' in the future, I'm sure of it.

I try really hard not to buy tools (or anything else for that matter) just because it's a good deal. I'm mostly successful... :cautious:

I have to say the whole degloving topic here is a little disturbing... and it should be. I went a long time doing things in my wedding ring, and had to cut it off a few years ago because it had been so long (=many years) since I'd removed it and I'd gained enough weight that it wasn't possible to remove it for an MRI without cutting it off. I feel naked without it, so I got a silicone one until I could get the gold one repaired.

Since then I've had a couple close calls that made me wonder what would have happened if I'd had the gold ring on. I fight the "It won't happen to me" thing constantly...

I experienced another de-gloving incident while rock climbing when a climbing partner wedged his ring in a crack and fell. The evac was not fun.

I've never worn a ring or anything solid around my wrist due to seeing this stuff. I won't even wear a lanyard around my neck unless it has a break-away knot--and then rarely. I spent too many years zooming through thick timber on skis and on foot, and the idea of snagging a lanyard....

I knew a guy did that loading a lawnmower into the bed of a truck. The other guy helping let go of his side and it came down catching his wedding ring.

I swear to God this is true:

When the line came tight around the end of my finger, it popped it off and the tip landed in the water next to the boat. Within a split second a seagull snatched it up and made off with it.

At the ER the doctor asked if I had the tip so they could attempt to put it back on.

After I told him that story, he disappeared and a few minutes later returned with a whole herd of doctors and nurses ....."now, tell that story again". I guess at least I could brighten their day with my misadventure....lol

Back to the topic ... I picked this up on eBay. I have a green, hard handle 3/8 drive and decided I needed a 1/4 ratchet to go with it.

Lines are a great way to lose fingers! I nearly did once when salmon fishing. I was moving across a riffle on my way to a new hole and had left my fly dragging in the water behind me. A 16 lb silver hit the fly and a loop of line grabbed my right index finger. I landed the fish, but the bruise where the line had cut into my finger lasted for weeks.

We have cowboys out here--both types. You can tell a real cowboy from a barstool cowboy by the highly-worn rodeo buckle and often a missing right-hand thumb. It's easy to lose a thumb when dallying-off a lariat (and attached angry beef) to the saddle horn.

That 40% sale was just too tempting a lure. I'm lucky I got out of there with just these two sets.

ICON 10pc XL Metric Ratcheting DBE Wrench Set & 5pc XL BBE Flex Ratcheting Wrench Set.

ICON 10pc Extra Long Professional Metric Double Box Ratcheting Wrench Set and 5pc Extra Long P...jpg

ICON 10pc Extra Long Professional Metric Double Box Ratcheting Wrench Set and 5pc Extra Long P...jpg

I like that the Icon flex DBE set is about 2" longer than my Tektons, that they are 12pt instead of 6pt, and most of all that they are reversible as opposed to the Tekton's flip-to-reverse. The Tektons have quite a bit thicker beam & hinge, and are just a bit heavier though. I'm not sure yet how I feel about the ICON's protusion as opposed to Tekton's more typical ratcheting wrench ends though. Seems a lot like the difference in length it could be an advantage or disadvantage depending. They seemed just different enough to me to justify having both sets. Time will tell which is more useful / reliable for me.

I have had those two sets for a long time, and they have been terrific.

This guy arrived yesterday. A Stahlwille 11111050 along with a Koken 1/4" Spinner.

Damn it is small! Not sure if it's a keeper.... The spinner is awesome though!

stahlwille micro ratchet - 2.jpeg

In comparison to Wiha and Wera bit ratchets, a Snap On T72, and an Astro Nano 91405.

stahlwille micro ratchet - 7.jpeg

For close-quarters work, in silly-tiny 1/4" dr. format, I always recommend the wee Astro gearless:

IMG_2965.jpg

Brutally simple -- no change of direction switch, the drive square pushes through to the other side. Sprag clutch in practice still has a tiny amount of backlash, so it's like a better modern ratchet for backlash before another productive swing can happen. I think they started out an Astro product, I got mine from Griot's Garage, Northern Tool sells a zillion of them (and a larger 3/8" dr. one) under Titan brand, I think. An ATF soak helps. When you need it, you need it!

I've undoubtedly told this story in some form or another here at GJ...

Dad was a machinist, and later a toolmaker. Never did CNC, everything was hands-on. Somehow, he made it through a long career with ~98-99% of his fingers intact. Had at least 2 or 3 trips to the ER to have pieces sewn back together. Lost the fleshy tip of one thumb. Not really obvious when you look at it today, but he says it's still numb 30+ years later.

Never, ever wore his wedding ring except for VERY special occasions. Didn't bother Mom.

Luckily, my FIL was a carpenter, and rarely wore his wedding ring. So, my wife is totally OK with me not wearing mine. In fact, both of us wear them like any other jewelry: not in the shower, not while sleeping, etc. I wear it when I leave the house, but never when doing anything with tools, or on a boat.

I did buy some tools today... thanks to (someone) here at GJ, I learned about the 40% off Icon wrench sets at HF. Picked up the SAE angled wrenches for a long-overdue overhaul of some hydraulic lines on my old Terramite backhoe.

My Memorial Day sale Koken finally arrived today.

Koken's least skippy, most Flank-Drivey-ist, and somehow quite affordable socket set. (Fairly priced even before the big holiday sale.) 8-19mm, no skip.

IMG_2891.jpg

Even came with a socket rail. A rail that, unlike some others I've known, doesn't fight you to the death to remove a socket.

IMG_2892.jpg

Pardon my problems focusing at close range. Satiny down low, and the rest of the socket seems like satin that got polished a little bit. Each socket reads size, Koken, part number, made in Japan. No laser beams involved, either.
IMG_2894.jpg

Really taking the Flank Drive (they call it Surface Drive*) concept far. I don't know how well these will work but I'll know soon enough.

IMG_2896.jpg
_________
* Make your own Carlinesque commentary about "How else is a socket going to work?" and "surface streets", too.
Ive got the Gedore version that I've been using for years, its always been the socket I use 1st as they fit SAE and metric by design. If only I could find them in deep socket too.
I wasnt actually looking for them and I only started using them because I bought myself and my dad each a Gedore set without checking but it turned out not to matter as these worked great, 6 point sockets with almost the flexibility of a 12 point as far as placement goes in tight spaces. To me they're the best all rounders that dont round.

Damn it. I need to stop buying tools. But I want that 10-piece double box set with one ratcheting end so bad. Definitely a few times where they would of been good to have.

It's a matter of what you're used to. I find them very comfy and practical. Like swinging them much more than regular wrenches. Of course you usually grab what is closest, but if I have the choice I often go for these.
When I said "Unnecessary, obsolete... maybe", it was to reflect that there's some debate about the matter.

Stahlwille last bits arrived today.

Stahlwille 4686 5 Piece Slotted And Pozidriv Screwdriver Set
Not a brand I had in mind when looking for screwdrivers, but this caught my eye at a very good price.

Stahlwille 4640 DRALL+ Pozi Screwdriver PZ0 x 60mm
To complement the above set. The handle and shaft printing are of an older design.
P_20250611_120921 (Custom).jpg

Stahlwille '400 Drall' 1/4" Drive Spinner Handle 150mm Long
I wanted one with a drive hole and initially got a Bahco 6956, but I didn't like the handle (too round and small diameter).

Wera 003529 1/4" Drive 8784 A1 Zyklop Bit Adaptor
There's a fair bit of longitudinal play at the square drive end; the groove that receives the ball is too wide.

P_20250611_121342 (Custom).jpg

Stahlwille 405 1/4" Drive Extension Bar 2" (54mm) & 4" (100mm)
I'd got some Beta ones at first, but upon arrival the amount of play in them was unsatisfactory. The male ends of these looked very sharp, and unsurprisingly there's little play.

Facom R.209S 1/4″ Drive Wobble Extension Bar 55mm
The Stahlwille equivalent (405W) trades off strength in favour of a wider wobble angle (15deg each way), which was not to my preference.

Facom R.240A 1/4″ Drive Universal Joint
Just because it was a fair bit cheaper than the Stahlwille equivalent (407).

Stahlwille 427 3/8" Drive Extension Bar 1.5" / 38mm & 3" / 76mm
Being impressed with the fit of their 1/4" extensions, I also chose them for some extra 3/8" lengths I wanted. The lack of play is excellent, and the ball spring is quite strong (better on both these matters than Facom extensions, and Stahlwille's own spinner handle above).

I think theres a rule here in 🇬🇷 about people in industry or general contractors etc eg someone operating a forklift about no rings worn.

Not sure if its official or not but everyone knows and adheres to it.

So the excess orange Tupperware collection started becoming a bit of a pita in the garage. So I bought another base unit to make moving it out of my way a little quicker

IMG_2787.jpeg
Klein several months back advertised a base module that was basically a glorified hand truck for the modbox system. I noticed yesterday they no longer have pictures of it on their site. That’s a bummer, I really wanted one.

Picked these up from the GJ'er Pinne listed in the Classifieds. The made it in good shape despite the fact that the USPS forced them to take a tour of I believe every state in the lower 48 at least once. The package tracking repeatedly showed it coming back to the same 'USPS Regional Facility' hub that's usually a one-day delivery from there to me, only to get the notice they had 'Departed" that facility and then show up in some crazy other part of the US a couple days after, and then back to the same regional hub a couple days after that. "In Transit to Next Facility - Arriving Late" :ROFLMAO:

Yeah, I'm probably buying too many tools when I have something to post most days in the new tool thread...
But today, the USAG RBRT wrenches arrived.

Ordered from "MrWorker" in Italy, about $150 shipped with the case, two about two weeks but there was a delay in shipping, actual transit took about a week.

Very nice wrenches, good length, heft, serious anti-slip design (identical to Matco RBRT). Very happy with my Taiwanese/Italian wrenches! ;-)

Some pictures and a quick video below...

I really like that type of case to hold wrenches, especially if I need to haul them around. I can just grab one and go.. and it's very compact. Very easy to find what you want

A #2 Vessel Pozidriv hit my porch the other day. I did not get to use it. What I bought it to work on, I did with a bit out of a bit set.IMG_5120.jpeg

I had a #2 Pozi screwdriver at one time, but I have no idea where it is.

Working on a build that will use a bunch of 3/8-16” security screws that take a T45 security bit. Good excuse to get a bunch of different drivers.

The socket Japanese “Eight” brand, and the L keys German made Wiha, and the bits Wiha of unknown origins. fun.

Well, take it apart and put it back together again and get back to us!

(Just kidding.) This will now serve as a deterrent. From your tool box, it will ward off all future Posidriv fasteners.

A few things arrived today.

Griot's Garage (free shipping as I bought some other stuff)
- lug nut brush, USA, $18.99
- garden hose on/off valve, stainless, polished, O-ring'd, China, $29.99
(I consulted the Oracle at GJ first and Dramm was a serious consideration but I liked the lever on this one better, looked less likely to maim me)

Cripe Distributing, via ebay:
- Wiha not-so-long 13mm nutdriver, Germany, $12.57 with shipping
Chrome, unlike my other Wihas. No biggie.

IMG_2985.jpg

I now have three 13mm nutdrivers, which is silly. It started with the FACOM being dirt cheap but too long for a job I commonly use it for. Then I bought a Wiha set that came with a 13mm -- equally silly in its length.

IMG_2984.jpg

Inaction pic of all the Wihas on my new magnet rack:

IMG_2987.jpg

As the nutdriver heads get bigger they start to interfere with the handles. This rack would probably be perfect for screwdrivers (which is what I think they market it as anyway.)

Wiha used to make both styles shown at the same time- I have both and prefer the shorter ones. If Cripe is selling them, I guess they've discontinued the shorter style with the hollow shafts?
