Today was the first time I've ever been on a Snap-On (or any other) tool truck..... To top it off, he offered, without me asking, a generous discount on the tools
It's been years since I've been on an actual Snap On tool truck, but still buy a fair amount of SO tools, usually directly through shop.snapon.com.

I've often seen buyers in forums and elsewhere mention 'great deal', etc, but I have no idea what that equates to...

CoThG and any others that buy directly from a SO tool truck. What kind of discount can you typically get or expect on a Snap On tool truck cash purchase? I really like the convenience of ordering online vs. hunting down a local franchisee, but if it really is a significant discount, maybe I should give it a try.

Nice haul by the way...

I have never had an actual discount off the truck unless the driver had it on a truck special or if it had been sitting so long that he wanted to get rid of it. It usually was like a 10% discount. That’s for Snappy, Matco, and MAC. Now if I were trading in something, especially if it were something Snap-on to the Matco guy, I’d usually get a nice discount, say 20-30%.

He gave me three discounts. On the pliers set it was 15% and the two ratchets were 21% and 25% off. He threw in the #2 Phillips ACR bit. I don't know if this is typical for him or an enticement to get me to start buying tools from him or maybe just trying to sell slow moving products? I didn't expect a discount but it was a nice gesture.

I was all set to buy 1/4” and 3/8” locking, flex-head Matco ratchets and then my in-laws gave me some HF gift cards for Christmas. There really wasn’t anything else at HF that caught my eye this morning so I decided to give these G2 ratchets a whirl. I gotta say, they make a good first impression. I am a die hard tool truck guy but these seem pretty nice and didn’t cost me a dime compared to buying the two Matco ratchets which would have been >$300.

You shouldn't expect a discount. As an enthusiast who isn't on a route you would need to be paying in full.

My dealer in SoCal is always busy and while he'll happily work with enthusiasts it's not his core business - he may need to actually do more work to transact with an enthusiast rather than a shop customer (such as coordinating a meetup). However, the you can get any of the deals from the monthly flyers on the truck, not sure if you can via the website. If you get a freebie or a discount, I'd consider it to be a nice surprise.

Those two are the best of the (current) Icon G2 ratchet lineup.. Perhaps even the best of all Icon tools IMHO. Vey nice tools even when compared to "the best"

So it looks like it's all over the place...
I'd probably buy $1K-$2K worth of SO tools from a franchisee right away if it was at a 20% discount (my choice of tools, not dead stock), but it sounds like that isn't typical or realistic to expect.

So I'll continue being really choosey on what I buy and do it through corporate. Thanks for the info though!

They had some Christmas deals for the tech students and these snapring pliers came at an incredible price. Total overkill for me at this point but hey, buy once cry once I guess. I really like that they are convertible from internal/external so I should be all set for a while .IMG_1533.jpegIMG_1535.jpeg

Yes, sorry I forgot to report back. Very high quality, exceptional customer service.
And.... just received the monogrammed leather coasters I ordered last week as a Christmas gift for friends.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Sweet! My wallet still holding up good. Think I’m going to try out some belts next

I got a pretty good deal on that same set back in early November. Congrats and enjoy!

Kreg track saw new in the box at a local Pawn Shop. Ended up getting it for $200. Had to buy the rail but still saved $150 over buying the kit new. Searched for days to find some case or whatever to store it in. It's perfectly the wrong size for any of the mid-sized tool cases from Harbor Freight, Craftsman and so on to work. Finally found this Kobalt 12 gallon storage container from Lowes. Seems well made and has locking handles and obviously it was black and blue. :) I had some layered shadow foam left over from doing gun cases years ago so did that for the bottom of the container. So old that it didn't peel very well but it works. Also got the arbor hole plug to aid with the dust collection. Ordered the anti tip and the brackets to hang the track on the wall but they haven't arrived yet.

Early Christmas gift to me...
Got me a Cyclops... The unit from Maxxeon has good reviews when compared to the offshore knockoffs...
Made in Ottawa Canada... Good enough for me...

Damit... Just noticed this...

I was gonna say… I bought one recently and it’s made in China. That said in the two times I’ve used it, I love this light.

New (or new to me) tool items for Christmas!
-carhartt work shirts
-gear wrench locking flex head long 1/4 drive ratchet off amazon. It's $25 and comes with a 1/4 bit in it...but will accept other bits that normally can fit in an impact extension
-2 craftsman long c pliers (amber handle grips)
-milwaukee coffee mug
-hd gift cards
-killer pile of proto and p&c tools from 4cycle. Im really excited about these because they fill a ton of holes in my vintage proto collection

Bought the Milwaukee for No.1 son and the Wera for No.2 son. Both ok. in fact the Wera is very good and I bought myself one. It's tiny and fits the hand well.
Another toy I didn't have or really need but that gap is now filled.

Also looked at this Velocity striker lamp. Good piece of kit £52.
My trusty Snap on torch is still going strong 12 years on though.

Hope you enjoy it. I've been happy with mine.

When you buy the kit from Kreg, it comes with a soft bag for carrying. It's OK but just seemed kind of cheesy. The tote looks interesting - color would make it readily identifiable for me. I've not seen the anti-tip or arbor hole plug before. I'll have to look into those. I've not had an issue with dust collection on mine.

Today was the first time I've ever been on a Snap-On (or any other) tool truck. The owner of our small town's gun shop also does Cerakoting and has an Epic Utility Vehicle box in his shop. Awhile back I asked him who the local Snap-On dealer was. He gave me the dealers number and I texted him asking if he deals with DIYers. He responds that he does and I told him I got his number from the local gun shop. He said that's one of his regular stops and said to drop by anytime. He said his usual time was 12:30. I live just a few miles away and he was kind enough to text me to say he's running about 10 minutes late. Now granted, this guy has never met me before and we've only texted once and for him to take the time to let me know he's running a few minutes behind told me he's very professional and is the kind of person I want to do business with. I arrive at the gun shop just before he pulls in and he invites me onboard. I introduce myself and ask if he has a few minutes and I'd like to purchase some tools. The dealer looks in his mid-30, clean cut and well spoken. I tell him that I'm not a professional tech, just a hobbyist DIYer who likes nice tools. I tell him that I'd like to build a relationship with a Snap-On dealer as I want to steadily replace lesser tools with quality stuff and I'm a cash buyer.

I've read numerous stories about how Snap-On dealers don't like DIYers, but he was extremely polite. It was a very pleasant experience quite unlike some of the stories I've read about dealers being rude to non-professional techs or not even wanting to deal with them at all. I complimented him on this nice truck (class 7 Kenworth) and how I'm used to seeing the typical box van. His truck was packed with inventory. He had everything I was wanting in stock.

My toolbox is yellow and the two ratchets I purchased are not offered in Hi-Viz. I asked him if I could purchase separate Hi-Viz handles and swap them out. He said no need to buy as he would order Hi-Viz handles and swap them out for free and warranty my orange handles.

He said he makes this stop the same time each week and I told him I will be regular buyer. It was a great experience overall and we chatted about tools for about an hour. To top it off, he offered, without me asking, a generous discount on the tools since I was a cash buyer and threw in a pair of socks and a #2 Phillips bit.

Here is today's haul...

Quick follow up to my recent "stork" Knipex locking pliers -- I found a use for them! I was going after a dastardly spring hose clamp in a confined space. (I normally defend springy hose clamps, but in this case, BMW used some with no tabs on them.)

From bottom to top, the pliers I tried to use.

IMG_6721.jpg

4” Vise Grip - too small
6” Vise Grip - still too small, can’t fit that and hand up in that hole
Knipex stork-like pliers — I got the job started!
Then the hose clamp moved into an awkward spot.
Then it was time for the $12 cheap, cheap HF pliers, and they finished the job. That’s twice they’ve saved my bacon on this modern car. They aren’t a work of art, but they do work. $12!

The lesson is clear! Buy those HF long vise grips, people! Also, I need to hunt down some Petersen 9” long nose Vise Grips, next time that might be the tool for some job.

Speaking of works of art, I've bought "10 inch Vise Grips" from Knipex before and was underwhelmed at the heft and finish and feel. Thanks to some guy in YouTube comments, I've learned that Knipex isn't making the locking pliers, they are rebranded Bollman. That makes sense, because they seem okay, but not crazy good like most Knipex. I grew up on real Petersen Vise Grips, and now own Malcos, too. I'm spoiled. And you saw that boogery weld I posted a pic of last week!

Oops... squinting at that pic, the long locking pliers I bought were "Triplett" brand and I paid $20 on Amazon! Definitely one of those "coming out of the same Chinese factory" items, and get the HF unless you're in love with padded vise grips handles.

I bought a oil/water seperator for this. I'm sure it's installed between the manifold and brass fitting. With tuflon teflon tape. The size would be 1/4" NPT. Anything I'm not aware of for doing that?

This part...

If anyone else replied already, I missed it - so pardon me if this has already been addressed.

I think this is is intended to be mounted at the "user end" of your air hose. It might survive for a fair while mounted on the compressor, especially if you leave a loop of hose over the handle, but I don't think that's the intended usage.

The lesson is clear! Don't buy German cars!

You never shown the pesky clamp.

a) Agreed, the modern ones, yuk poo! Such silliness. The woman, she ask me what to get, she wanted to buy a used car on credit to establish a credit rating. "A Honda or Toyota", I said. She came back with a 100K mi old BMW X5.

2) I'm detailing the water pump job over at my Underground Lair thread if you want to see that fartknocker hose clamp up in a blind hole.

I don't think anybody replied to him, so yeah, listen to texasprd! For your compressor/regulator/air hose basic setup, you want something like this on the wall:

I wondered. However, I went with manifold mount to keep the separator horizontal (easier to drain although it probably won't need that for a long time), and knowing I would be likely to drop a nozzle sprayer on the ground, I wouldn't want sudden glass breakage. Less stuff on the user end. Thanks for your input.
