Picked this up yesterday.
Working on BMW 325CI replacing evaporator and suction line. Anyway, the line bolts are 6mm hex; using my HF 6mm hex bit, I round off one bolt, I have to use a torx to finish getting the bolt out. OK, no problem it happens. On to the next one; same thing, ok no big deal. Well, ****!!! Third one, same thing. I suppose I should have stopped after the first one? Definitively after the second time, right?
So I call my Mac guy, "I need a hex set, where are you?"
He says, "I can be there in 30 minutes."
So he gets here, and has a semi-long metric and SAE set for $250, but the case is dirty (really dirty, like diesel oil on it,) and it's missing one key (3/32.) I ask him to order a new set, but I will pay for it in full and take the 6mm for now. He says, "I will knock $50.00 off, and order the missing key."
Well ****, now I know I can beat the price down. Kind of feel bad, asking him to come out of his way on a day that's not my day for him to stop by. But, money is money, and he and I both know I am going to buy a lot more ****.
So, I say "Nah, you know me, I really want a mint case, just order a new set."
He responds, "You know you have a serious problem."
"Yup" Laughing.
"Ok, $150.00"
"Deal!"
I am also getting a couple of free T-shirts and hats. I was wearing a HF shirt at the time. He asked why I was wearing it. I said, "it was free and its a work shirt."
He asked what size I was (Large.) Didn't have large on his truck, so he said he'd order a couple for me, and some hats.
So, back to the tools... I measure the HF hex bit, 5.91mm at the top (above the line on the bit,) 5.97mm below the line, WTF?
Mac, 6mm on the dot.
I also notice the top corner edges of the HF bit are turned down. Not sure if that has any bearing on the situation?
Cleaned the case up, looks way better (still have to clean it more; yeah I know, I have a problem, LOL)
Oh, and the Mac hex worked great on the rest, felt much better in my hand also. Now I have to go to Home Depot to buy some replacement bolts. Maybe I will grab some more Channellocks while I'm there?
EDIT: I will order a full set of standard length, stubby, and extra long hex on Monday, and the swivel hex sets while I'm at it.
