I absolutely despise HF, but i will say that they are definately making the right moves in getting rid of all the goofy colors.

Just curious, but what possible reason could cause you to dislike Harbor Freight? The place is great. Not trying to change your opinion, but now I'm worried that there is something seriously wrong with the place that I am missing, LOL.

It is just lower than low end ****. If you truly want Harbor Freight type things at an even lower price, order them through Lumber Liquidators, they have the Norge line. You may have to wait a few days for delivery or store pickup and they dont have the bigger stuff like the press above but as an example the HF air hose reel for 47 is only 20 through them. Look in the Hot Deals thread there is someone with the screen name of _N_ schilling for Norge.

Finally got to use my new toy. It takes a little getting used to not having to fumble around with adapters and cups. I like it a lot. Although I already found I need a bigger adapter already and this was only a Denali 2500 HD.

is it worth the 700 bucks for it compared to the 100 dollar OTC one? honest to god question here, no grief meant...but i've been using an off brand of the otc for years and it's held up just fine

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002SRGXY/?tag=atomicindus08-20

actually this one...which is more expensive than what it's based one haha

I used to refuse to shop there, but lately for stuff I know I'll only need once or twice a year, I've picked a few things up. I just can't justify the price of some of the other brands for my purposes

Their quality is hit or miss. I think we all can agree on that.. but IMO a lot of the more "common" tools that people use from HF are at least going the right direction. Press and "pro" series ratchets are decent quality for the price for example, at least in my opinion

Getting rid of the crazy red/orange color doesn't hurt either, haha

I certainly wouldn't have very many things (if any) from there if I was a pro mechanic, but for me working by myself on my own stuff a few weekends a month, it's hard to beat them on certain things

Tech89 they make an adapter kit BJP1OPT is the part number. Have it and it comes in handy. Comes with a big adapter and another for doing u-joints on ram pickups.

I have the otc car master kit. Its a super nice kit and served me well for many years. Its at home now so i don't have to carry it back and forth from work. The snap-on is worth the money. The throat is way bigger so it can do the trucks easier. Its heavier duty so less chance of breakage. The retention system helps alot. Instead of fumbling with tons of plates and adapters with the otc. Can get very frustrating when things are in the way.

I didn't pay 700 dollars for it, and yes I did buy it new off of the Snap-on man. I've broken two OTC brand presses in the last few years, not saying the OTC presses aren't quality presses. Not sure what part of the country you live in, but typically by the time I get to replace ball joints on vehicles rust has seized them in place. The OTC ones work until they don't and so will the Snap-on press. I do front-end and steering and suspension work at least three to four days out of a five and a half day work week, so maybe it was more worth it for a technician like me since that's the majority of the work I perform. It is nice just picking up one piece and pressing a balljoint into a control arm or spindle. Necessity? Absolutly not, but it is nice.

EDIT: I DID NOT buy this press primarily because it says Snap-On on it. I buy what works best for me.

i do front end a bunch too, but we don't tend to have the rust problems down here...maybe if the truck lived in galveston its whole life...either way, it is a damn nice press, and two shops i used to work at had it, but i never did any work with it...till i went back to the dodge house to use the o'reilly special again haha

Thank you for the part number. I'll keep that on hand for the Snap-On man.

I used the standard BJ presses for years and they usually did fine. I recently broke mine and decided I'd made enough money with the others to pay the $400 for the BJP1 (eBay). I usually hate doing ball joints due to the juggling adapter act. This is so much nicer to work with. Also, the standard ball joint press isn't wide enough to do the 1480 ujoints on my buggy, but this one is several inches wider.

Does SO recommend using an impact with it? I know OTC frowns on impact use with any puller.

Its meant for use with an impact. They even show this being done in their demonstration video. The really important part is to keep the screw threads lubricated well which is why they went through the trouble of installing fittings right into the frame. A lot of guys ignore it and end up galling the threads.

Most guys use impacts with the OTC kit too. Same deal just keep the threads coated with moly grease and it should last.

Please post pics of towel holder/wire holder modification when you can.

very low tech solution

removed the towel holder stubs that were bolted on, and enlarged the holes slightly.

i had a piece of 1/4" steel rod i ran a die down approx 1" on each end.

nut on the inside, towel bracket, and a lock nut on the outside.

it's made it all day hanging on the inside of the body of my service truck.

i carry 4 or 5 partial small spools of wire.

i just came in from freezin' my d*ck off all day, i'll try to remember to grab a camera in the morning when i leave.

Dude. I have that same vacuum pump. Mine looks like its been through hell. But it works better than my motive/mityvac whatever it is. I just need a new gauge for it.

i have a cheap plastic mitivac i bought several years ago.
last time i used it i noticed it leaking a little bit,
i saw this one a couple weeks ago, i was short on "disposable" cash, i figured next time a had a little spare cash i'd see if it was still there.

when did you buy yours, was it new?

trying to put a time frame on mine.
i'm guessing early/mid 80's. the font on the instructions & the glossy paper seems to be from around that era....

A week with it. Can honestly say it's by far better than my 115QTIMAX 3/8 impact. Sold that to our new tech after the first use.

I love the Swag products but I am thinking, I can buy a small (portable) bandsaw the type with a stand for less than the stand. I must admit, I did not decide yet to go for the Swag table or the small tabletop bandsaw. I have a problem making decisions, always going back and forth on the pros and cons.

Can't remember when I got it. I know mine has a date on the sticker by the gauge. Says 1987 I think. Looked around in my old toolbox about 6 months ago and found it so I put it in my new box at work. It don't lose vacuum like my mityvac does.
