I have to agree. Seeing the SO truck is such a sight for sore eyes. So tired of wasting my money on Mac and Matco... Especially Mac.

I agree.....

Sure, Mac still has a few USA produced items, but it's now mostly Taiwan and China stuff. MAC tools to me is "Harbor Freight on wheels". I will not pay tool truck prices for Asian junk I can buy at HF for a fraction of the price.

Looks just like my co-workers Mac impact. But I agree too, I'd rather buy Snap-On than the others lol. 1, cause they seem to be one of the few USA made still, 2, I have too many Matco now lol, and 3, I'm a brand kinda man . But in some defense for Matco, You can't beat their student discounts, on some sales, you get 60% off on most tools. And some of the major Matco tools are still made in the US. Not sure about their ratchets tho...

Mac has some great tools in their line up. Just got to be careful I guess. Now Matco has so.e nice stuff too but you have to be even more careful. They only make tool boxes they rebrand every tool in their line up.

So I haven't been buying tools as much lately. Just because works been a little iffy and I've got pretty much all I need. I've been buying consumables and that's it.

I got on the Snap-On truck a couple weeks ago to buy a set of screwdrivers for a Christmas present for my dad.

Which is really nice with pearl white handles.

But my dealer finally had an opportunity to get me into a triple bay box for cheap. So I ordered it and it showed up Monday. I already posted it in the toolbox thread, but now that it's settled into its spot I thought I'd post it here haha.

My daughter was excited too. She showed up to help me move tools over

I call this the most expensive set of screwdrivers I ever bought and I didn't even get a picture of the damn screwdrivers before my wife wrapped them haha.

Pretty much. It's only because I don't really have a tool bill though is why I got it. And it'll only take about 3 months to pay off the small amount I owe on it.

Which is good. Because in five months I'll be back to buying lots of diapers and baby stuff. Our second daughter is due in May.

I always thought tools were expensive until I had my first daughter. I now realize maintaining human life is very costly. Haha.

Almost all of my Mac stuff is made in USA. And it's all newer. All my sockets, from 1/4 to 1/2 chrome are USA as well as my wrenches. I really like their hard line stuff.

All of Mac's hard line is made in USA as well as their boxes. They have a brand called expert that is basically like blue point, and you can get dewalt stuff on the truck.

I prefer Mac to Matco because Mac still does make their own tools. All 3 companies have stuff made in Asian countries just depends what dealer you like better. I don't like Matco as much for the fact that everything is rebranded and can be had cheaper off the Independant truck. Where Mac and Snap-On still make their own tools. Mac sits somewhere between Snap-On and Matco even though it's not as popular.

I do a lot of business with the Mac dealer just because he's a friend and a neighbor and very reliable and the tools are top quality. There is some stuff I personally don't like so I just don't buy it. But everyone has their preferences of what they like and don't. But I've never found anything close to as bad as Harbor Freight quality on the truck. I've also found Mac to be one of the most reasonably priced trucks.

75% off at the local sears. They are clearing out the tools I guess, considering they had reduced it from a whole section down to about four tables all together with whatever was left, strewn about. Picked up an 88pc socket set for $33.90 all in. I figure it's worth it enough just to keep in the trunk of the car for emergencies.

Didn't see much else that interested me on the table, but I did notice they can't seem to sell those stupid auto hammers, which made me laugh a bit. There had to be 30 or so of them sitting there in various states of unboxing. Battery operated, but didn't look at the price.

Since you quoted my post I'll assume you directed all that info towards me.... Did you really think that I didn't know any of that? Did you really think I posted a comment about MAC tools without any personal experience or knowledge of their tools? lol

I made my first purchase on a MAC truck in the winter of 1990/91 and I've had a weekly MAC truck on-and-off ever since. My last purchase was about 6 months ago when I bought a $370 (roughly) set of USA MAC deep 1/2' drive chrome sockets. So yeah, after 25 years I know their line-up of tools fairly well. And I can also say that I've watched their overall inventory decline in quality, and also decline in the number of USA made tools. YES, SO HAVE THE OTHER TRUCK BRANDS. I get it!

Of the big three, there is absolutely NO QUESTION that Snap On still makes the majority of their hard line tools in-house, here in the USA. Everyone else is slipping far behind.

As for HF quality tools on the MAC truck..... I bought a brake caliper tool off the MAC truck a while back . It's made in China and it's identical to the HF tool. I bought a set of reverse drill bits off the MAC truck one day when I needed them..... yep, made in China and they were absolute cheese grade quality. So yeah, I'm done buying China tools from a truck when I can drive 10 miles to HF and get then at a fraction of the price.

Don't get me wrong..... I don't buy China tools on the SO truck either. I only buy "Snap On" hardline made-in-USA tools from the SO truck. None of their off-brand China/Taiwan junk. Like I said, luckily they still make most of there stuff themselves, here in this country.

Well you clearly don't know much since you called it "HF on wheels". MAC has been on a resurgence for the last 5 years bringing innovation and new USA made releases. You can chastise them over specialty tools but Snap-On does much the same with OTC and Lisle rebrands. This isn't the thread to get into a debate about it though.

You pretty much made my point right there!!

You can buy junk on any of the three trucks. I also know where you're coming from with the Quality declining on Mac. There's a noticeable difference between what they're putting out now and what they used to sell. But that's true of everyone to a degree.

I even borrow a couple of the older guys ancient 50+ year old Snap-On tools if I'm under a truck helping them out and they feel better than my stuff that's less than 10 years old.

I was only quoting your post because of your Harbor freight on wheels comment. When any of the other tool trucks would sell you the same Chinese **** if you asked for it

Yeah, their new USA ratchets a pretty damn nice. It's about time they came out with a fine tooth ratchet. I keep meaning to buy one but my ratchet drawer is already full of dual 80's

But Lisle and OTC are mostly made int the USA..... See the difference?

And you're right, this isn't the tread for this.... I'm done after this post.

My point was..... It seems like MAC has more China tools out of all the trucks that I've been on.

Admittedly, I haven't spent much time on a MATCO or Cronball truck but I know MATCO doesn't make ANY tools so I don't even bother to include them when thinking about who-makes-what.

I'm done. :)

Ive got the 1/4 drive set like that, those ratchets are really smooth !
Wonder who makes them ?
I'm not sure who makes them but you're right. They ar me smooth. Kobalt has become my favorite house brand for sockets and ratchets.

They are made by Rotar in Taiwan. Same people who make Toptul. I have that same set in my service van and it's a great set for the money. But be careful they are mixing in Chinese made tools in sets that are not as nice as their Taiwan counterparts.

Wow what in the world. It's very rare that anything good is even at pawn shops around here and usually they want more than retail for any tools!

Thanks guys! lol
I frequent this one pawn shop here in town and all the guys know me. When I walked in the guy I usually talk to was like hey I've got you some stuff behind the counter. He threw them up there and said $40. I couldn't get my cash out fast enough!

^ I got some of my Craftsman 1/2" drive deep-well sockets from a local pawnbroker. almost new. $20 for a full set of US-made SAE 12-point deep-wells.
couple weeks ago picked up a 1995 vintage 1/2" drive pear-head Craftsman ratchet (looked like new) from the same shop for $15.
some of them have great deals if you've got cash.
some of them think old beat-to-hell stuff is gold-plated.

just have to find the right guy.
