Picked these up last weekend. Two 36" aluminum pipe wrenches. Lady had them on a bidding group on Facebook. Well used, but looked after. Jaws are in good shape. One is a Westward, one a rigid.

How do you like the Williams screwdrivers. I've read more than a handful of reviews claiming that the shanks are crooked almost as if the hole in the handle wasn't drilled concentrically.
They are all perfect. No crooked shanks in my batch!

I was suspicious too, but I got them through a registered dealer off of the Snap On Industrial website. Probably won't matter but if they break I want to deal with them not an eBay 3rd party resale option.

Small purchase today. I thought I had a chipping hammer but apparently not. Once I got the arc welder hooked up and did a little playing around the other day, I figured I better get one.

I've got almost every black Williams screwdriver, and there's a few with crooked shanks. Nothing really noticeable unless you roll the shank on a table edge and watch the handle wobble.

The screwdrivers I have with the most crooked shanks are actually Snap On branded ones. I have a full set of SAE Snap On hex screwdrivers too, and several of those are terrible.

Nutts, I think I know the answer, but is that chipping hammer made in USA? The logo is trying really hard.

Yes, it's supposed to made in the US.

Menard's had two chipping hammers, this one and another for about $5. When I stopped by today, I grabbed the cheaper one to look at it as it didn't have a wire brush on it. I hang it back up on the hook and grabbed the more expensive (by $8), felt it was a btter deal and worth the extra bucks.

I was inspired by it to try something myself. It didn't work out quite as well. I thought "Hey I've got that adaptor to take a 1/4-20 and attach it to my boom mic stand. I wonder if that could hold the stick light." The answer is it really can't. This is a picture of it precariously not toppling over for the moment.

IYmy5N9.jpg

I had never thought of that. I have a dozen or so of those boom mic stands. I think they have a secondary use now.

I used one of these to attach it to the mic stand:

Hopefully yours is stronger than mine. Someone suggested adding a counterweight but I think mine would snap in half.

Makes me think of a toy I had as a kid:
tower_crane.jpg

It was a tower crane with a little electric motor that really could lift stuff. It couldn't lift much weight though without flipping over. I knew a real tower crane had a large counter weight on the back so I taped every battery I could find and had like a 20lb counterweight on it. It was just a cheap plastic crane. I tried lifting something heavy and the motor was straining and the boom was bending but it didn't tip over like before. Then it exploded. :Violent:

And how do you feel about the switch? What's your JD power initial quality gut feel / reckon?

The biggest reason I DIDN'T want to make the switch is because of the latching system.. but I just realized something this week.

The shop is MY shop. I don't plan on rolling the cabinets around once I build the work top for them like others have. So with that being said, I'm going to remove the latch. I might find a way to mount magnets to the insides of the boxes so that the drawers don't come open so easily.

The drawers look and feel like they will take almost as much weight as my snapon box. The snapon box drawers open out farther than the HF but it's only an inch or two and I don't think it will be THAT big of an issue. The amount of added space means I won't have to jam pack the drawers. My goal is to organize things spaciously and easy to find. Drawer weight should not be a HUGE issue with exception of my socket drawers but I plan on doing one for 1/2, one for 1/4, and one for 3/8. They will be lined with the Ernst Socket bosses (Red for SAE, Blue for Metric). I think that by separating them out like that on the socket bosses and not lining them up row upon row without any gap in between will help save some weight.

Two other boxes I have are husky's and the HF are CLEARLY better than them. I wanted four matching boxes to layout the tools easier. The HF are at a price point that makes this possible while still giving me sufficient quality.

Overall quality of the box seems good. Not fond of the casters but the casters on my snappy are crappy right now anyways and I really don't plan on moving them once I build the castors onto them. If I decided they need to be more mobile later I'll budget $100 each for quality casters. I saved $100 on this one with the coupon.

I like the fact that i have the options to do all the add ons (side cabinets, lockers, or top box) should I decide to go a different route in the future. I am kind of kicking around the idea of doing a side cabinet on each end of them but I'm kind of thinking that will be over kill and I'm not sure I'll have enough space in the new shop to have THAT much work bench space.

Side note.. one thing I really didn't like was that they didn't come with precut drawer liners. Having the rolls of non slip liners is ok.. but honestly its hard to get them perfect.

That's the 56"? Are the latches the same as on the 44"? If so I haaaaate the latches on it. Not even for moving around but I just have to really push in on it to latch them closed. I don't ilke that some of the drawers are open and some are latched. I think I would have went with the Masterforce if I did it over again because they have the latches built into the handle on the front of the drawer. Though if I had done that I'm sure there'd be something about those that aren't as good as the HF. It works just fine for my uses but those latches do bug the **** out of me. I haven't tried taking one of the drawers off yet though to see if there are little rubber dampers I can remove or anything to get them to latch easier. Otherwise it's a good box. Are you planning to fill one of the 4 with just Felo screwdrivers? :)

lol...... I'll fill one drawer of them with the Felo Drivers. Honestly don't think there is a point to buy the ergonomics so I'll probably complete out the 552 set if there is something I'm missing. The ergo's are nice but they arnt SO much more comfortable to have a second set for me.

I think my next goal is kniplex's I have a feeling thats going to be more costly unless another deal like Ash's come up for those lol.

I was really wanting to get the wiha's but ash made that deal so good I had to jump on it.

These are the 56'' boxes. I didn't like the drawer's on the 44'' I think they share the same button/latch though don't they? I don't have to push the latch in to get them to close though.. at least I don't remember doing that. I'll check tomorrow. I plan on unloading my snapon box to clean it up and post it on craigslist. Hoping some dale jr fan gets a big tax return and wants to waste some money on the old #8 bud junior box I got. If I can get a decent amount for it, it might pay for majority of this project.

I was battling between the 56'' and the 72'' For the price of the 56'' I could add the side locker for $179 on each end and have more space than the 72''. The only real reason I liked the 72'' more than the 56'' was the massive top drawer. That said, I didn't have anything that HAD to be in that big of a drawer so the ability to have a top added later if I chose it made the difference to me. I don't see them adding a 72'' top. If they do later I'll kick myself some. I also didn't like there was only 4 casters for the 72''. To me it seems like it needs six. I didn't see an easy way to add a pair and actually have them be able to support any really weight.

On the 44" all that has to be done for easier opening and closing is to take the drawers out and straighten the bend (detent) at the end of the slides on the drawer with a pair of pliers. Don't take too much bend out or drawers won't want to stay closed. Did it to all of mine and dawers now open and close easily!

Don't have any pictures of them, but I'm starting automotive classes at my community college this fall, so I've recently dropped around $650 on tools. I'll have to see about getting some pictures once I get my box set up how I want. Still have a ton of tools to buy too, which will be expensive, since I go by the mantra of "buy once, cry once", so I'm buying good tools from the start, so I don't have to replace them as soon as I get a real job. Although I am waiting on the big name tools until I'm actually a student and can take advantage of their student programs.

Sweet! Keep us updated. I'm looking to start adding automotive tools to my collection as well.

I remember getting the SAME crane for Christmas one year. It was around the time that i determined "santa" had the same hand writing as my mother.... Anyway, having that thing was like someone giving me a new car, i loved it for years. And i did the same as you, never broke it, but i remember taping rocks with duct tape to the back. Loved it.

I went out and did it and it is much better. I took almost all of the bend out though because I will just lock it when I move it. It actually seemed like a useful enough "fix/hack" that I did a video on it for others. I gave you a shoutout for the idea too. My box is going to be a lot nicer to use now.

I tried to keep it short but it surprising how easy it is to ramble on and make a video super long. Especially when those Knipex Pliers Wrench look just like a bird / dinosaur.

Thanks for the excellent video though. I was mistaken on what I thought you were talking about. i havn't noticed that issue but I will go out and look now. I came out to the shop for a few before the first playoff game today to move the tools into the news box from the snappy.

Don't worry.. the felo's are nice in safe in their new home. I really want a set of kniplex comfort grip stuff now

Good video, i will most likely do this to my box as well. I agree, there is many times that i close my drawers and come to find out they are not fully closed because of the stupid detent. Only thing you have to be worried about is if your box is on a perfectly level surface, then the drawers may drift open. I have an old Snap On box at work that does this.

Love your long flowing hair, and your use of the word vi-o-la..... Lol.

This is good to know. I've been debating on getting the HF44 for a while now and every time I'm in HF and play with the display I'm turned off by the rough drawer closing.

Haha, great video man!

Thanks for the credit line, but in honesty I think I read somewhere here on GJ about doing this sometime back. I actually originally did it on my Craftsman Heavy Duty boxes under my workbench and it made a huge improvement! When I got my two new HF 44's last month I did it on them too. It a little trick that's not brand specific.

BTW, you sold me on the Knipex pliers wrench. Now another expensive "must have" tool for my tool box! Thanks alot!

Guilty as charged. I've always been a clown.

I am interested if the bigger cabinets have the same feel to the drawers. I can't remember from last time I was messing with them in the store but I thought above a certain size the drawers actually have a clasp and you have to slide a button to the side to open them.

Good video, i will most likely do this to my box as well. I agree, there is many times that i close my drawers and come to find out they are not fully closed because of the stupid detent. I never thought I'd get a compliment on my hair from a garage board. :)

I don't think they are so loose that if you were just a little unlevel you would have drawers sliding open, but I think if you were on much of a slope they would. My box isn't perfectly level as I never did shim the casters yet and I haven't had any sliding open phantomly.

Cool trick on the slides! I'm going to see if straightening the detents on my cart will help.

Let us know what happens. I'm not familiar with what the slides are like on the cart but you could help somebody else who is researching that cart.

This is good to know. I've been debating on getting the HF44 for a while now and every time I'm in HF and play with the display I'm turned off by the rough drawer closing.

I actually have sort of regretted purchasing the HF 44" over the Masterforce, but now with this fix I'm totally happy with my purchase again.

Haha, great video man!

Well, you were the one who told me and I read a lot of GJ. I may have missed it forever had you not posted.

Also yeah those Knipex Pliers Wrench are pretty sweet. I was unsure myself when I got them wether I would really use them and I almost always grab them first before most other tools. They're very versatile and built like a really well built thing!
