Last week the missus complained my old Eurodainu tyre gauge was a bit hard to read for her. So i mumbled something like 'maybe...digital...can't afford'.
Today this arrived, and it appears a Flexzilla whip hose to go with it is on it's way from the US.

......Super Scraper SS5(USA, thanks Eric O. @ SMA).

Me too. When I watched that video of his where he busted that thing out and raked that old silicone off I immediately hit pause on the video, opened up a new window on the screen and ordered one for myself. It's like a magic wand with a rubber handle on it.

Thanks, definitely on my list of things to buy now. I am so used to pushing with a scraper and sometimes things get gouged, that pulling motion allows you to feel things much better.

Is he using that on aluminum surfaces? I didn't think you could use carbide on aluminum heads/blocks.

I might try it then. I'm rebuilding the Kawasaki from my JD 425 right now and the gaskets are fused on the heads. The plastic razor is really not cutting it.

I think as long as you are careful it should be fine, if you act like an idiot you could ruin the mating surfaces.

A few eBay finds that came in this week. They all had some surface rust so I got a good deal. A little evaporust and some elbow grease and I ended up with some really nice user grade tools -

2 SK 1/4 ratchets
3 Petersen vise grips

I got a Snap-on scraper from the classifieds here and some Craftsman tappet wrenches from eBay.

One is stamped with the letter F, but that's fine because my last name begins with F.

Hi, my name is Dan and I am addicted to tools.
Isn't that how we are suppose to introduce ourselves at meetings like this?

Like most of you, I like wandering through big box stores and local hardware stores looking for deals and unique finds.

I do have a few questions though. Is there that much of a difference between Husky/Kobalt/Craftsman/Pittsburg and Snap-On, MAC, SK, MatCo tools for a garage mechanic? And by garage, I mean one attached to a house, not one attached to a dealership.

Next question, for those with aging eyes like mine, do you mark your tools to make the sizing easier to read and if so, what to you use?

Finally, is having 4 sets of SAE of combination wrench sets a bad thing or should I go for 5?

Thanks, Dan

Welcome to the site, Dan.
If you ask your question above to 100 different members here, you will get 99 different answers.
Yeah, there's a difference. Sometimes it's marginal. Sometimes you have to ask if it's worth the price.

On the markings on the sockets: another member just asked about this a couple weeks ago, and unless I'm mistaken S-K is one of the companies that marks their stuff with numbers large enough to see without a magnifying glass:

S-K 1.4 drive 12-pt Metric socket set 01.jpg S-K 1.4 drive 12-pt Metric socket set 02.jpg

And no, four sets of wrenches is hardly enough. I'm not sure if five is adequate either. ;)

It has been my experience that there absolutely IS a difference in many of the tools. No, not all. Some might say it is subjective, but I think it really boils down to your level of expectation.

And by garage, I mean one attached to a house, not one attached to a dealership.

All of them are here. I work professionally in an autobody shop. But I have an attached garage where I work on my bicycles.

Not a bad thing no, but I would spend my money elsewhere as opposed to a fifth set. This site will provide AMPLE motivation and inspiration for what other tools to get. I can assure you.

Partnering it with this and it's pretty close to new. I wanted a couple of light(in weight) and low backdrag long ratchets. I doubt I could find something better and with decent collector value long term( for Grandkid One). Already have a kit for the tough. The Snap-On won't be as easy but a Tuff or Proto kit will function. They'll never get beat on anyway. I have tons of long ratchets to try to kill that are easily replaced or repaired or warranteed . It would take a numbskull move to break these two anyway.

Nice scores Mark. I have a 3/8 Tuff long handle and love it. It's very smooth.

Is yours 1/2" drive?
The one I bought is. 1/2 x 15. I have the 3/8 x 10 and 7 1/2 models too. I also have that extra short SK with the funky Snap-On lookin handle and pure Facom palm type selector. They're all slick little pieces. I suppose I need to get the flex type but have decided on the Proto F since they have the screw holding the head to remove the slop when it starts to happen. The Tuff flex are just pinned from what I can gather ?

Little pricey but I got sick of having the bits for my impact driver jumbled in a magnetic tray. It's nicer than the red torin one lowes sells

My Matco guy had it for 22.95... I'll be testing it tomorrow. I expected it to be cheesy plastic but it had some good weight to it when he handed it to me as its all metal construction.
