Hello Everyone, I recently scored a 3-in-1 Smithy Lathe,Mill, Dill combo with lots of tooling. Somehow I had never even operated a metal lathe or a mill until I purchased this one. I had always wanted and got a pretty good deal on this set-up. I know alot of guys will say that this is junk or not accurate and they me be correct about it not being super accurate but it will do everything I need for now without question. I still haven't had much time to play with it, but I have turned a couple small parts for my race quad.
Nice that you got some tooling to get started. If I were you I would look for a proper milling vise at some point. Maybe it's just me being a bit ****, but I don't like using precision tool makers vise on a mill. I find they don't grab as tight as a milling vise.

Nice and congratulations. I know they get a bad rap but I had the big brother to yours for over 16 years. I had the Smithy CB1239 and made a lot of parts and money with it over that time frame. I originally bought it to support our racing by machining a lot of our own parts in-house and then it turned into doing more and more machining for clients as well which provoked my upgrading decision a couple of years ago.

If you clamp things properly and don't rely on the dials, actually use dial indicators for carriage movement, you can hold quite good tolerances for an import machine.

Good luck and keep us posted on your projects that you machine on it.

Mike.

Very nice. If you need a forum to learn, the hobby machinist forum is awesome:

I agree that a good mill vise would be a great first upgrade.
Use enco is a good place to purchase tooling and save some money.

Set up an account and they will send you many 20% off codes during the year.

You'll be able to make many projects with that lathe/vertical mill.

New Toptul T-handle universal extensions from GJ-er DNSchmidt. He sent them superfast and the price was amazing given the quality. The satin chrome finish on these is impressive. From now on any tools I buy new are going to be Toptul.

I haven't seen these listed in another of Mr. Schmidt's listings. Was this a private sale a I'd like a set?

Sorry I screwed up the following quote, MattVette89.

I saw my Mac guy today. This was one of the first things I have bought from the monthly sales flyer in a while. Buy one get one free.

I have never used those ball type hex bits. How is the strength on them? I assume they are more of a break it loose with a solid bit and then switch to the ball?

USA made?

And I gave my bottle opener some use camping this weekend. It's the official trailer bottle opener now. One of a kind!

Went to Lowe's yesterday while working, was browsing their hand tools and remembered the Irwin - labeled NWS pliers. The store I went to had a large selection, side cutters needle nose linesman pistol grip needle nose with lock. And, they were all on sale except the pistol grip needlenose.

Of course, didn't have my wallet...so after work, hit up my local store. They only had the Powerslot side cutters, but they were on sale also, so I picked up a pair. I'm gonna go back to the other store after payday to get the pistol grip needle nose.

How much were they on sale for please?

Well, let the flaming begin. 10 years ago when I was moved up to mechanic I had bought a mixture of sk, craftsmen and a few odds and ends from harbor freight, the Pittsburgh line. On my second week I suffered a minor injury at the hands of a pair of Pittsburgh pliers and I'll never forget what my coworker told me. "Harbor freight tools have no business being in your box at work, Ive had stitches and scars to prove it." The box was cleared of harbor freight, lesson learned at the time.

Well....I took a gamble again, mostly because of the praise on the Internet and here. I work in and around tooling so the idea of these composite ratchets was very appealing. It's not uncommon for guys to accidentally bump a punch and put a nick in it..with these being fairly soft composite might avoid any damage by such accidents. The 3/8 sounds good, other two sound pretty dry. I'll take apart and lube them when I return to work.

The two sided ratchet wrench is extremely stiff and sounds really dry. With some use hopefully it breaks in. I may try soaking it in oil.

Lastly, the old Palm grip. I like the fact it's larger because I have arthritis in my right hand. The smaller thumb/palm ratchets tend to bother me when using them for extended periods of time so this should prove to be quite useful.

Well I plan to give the new ratchets a thrashing at work. Hopefully they hold up. I'm still a bit leery. Going to look awful ugly sitting next to the set of Matco flex ratchets. :D

The extensions are USA made. The speed hex sockets are made in Taiwan. I haven't had a chance to use them yet, so I can't comment on the strength. My driver said they get a lot of use on motorcycles with limited clearance. I look forward to trying them out.

Don't ask me why - but I bought a vintage 1942 KR Wilson model 37F press on Sunday for $200.

It was one of those "rescue me from the scrappers" kind of feeling as I looked it over, that and my wife said "if you want it buy it"

Guys, don't post email addresses on any forum, they get farmed by spiders then spammed to death. Spell out the at and dot, please fix it for Mr. Schmidt's sake.

Got the same set from my dealer today. My first Taiwan Mac tools. Not bad quality.... Although I would probably not have bought it without the extensions.

Picked up a KRA2007 today. Someone bought it with their student discount without realizing how small it was and decided to get something bigger instead. It never even left the truck. Got my $500 back as a trade in for the Matco box I bought from him a few months back and gave him an additional $150. Also saw there was a buy one get one in the new flyer on a punch set I had bought a few weeks back and got him to give me the hammer.

My thoughts exactly. That's I've just been posting a link to his member profile so people can pm him instead.

I bought these two Knipex tools online to add to my Knipex tools

The Wire stripper - http://www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=group_detail&parentID=1363&groupID=1383
Feels a bit light (weight wise) but it cuts and strips well (does the job) :)

The Cable Crimper - http://www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=group_detail&parentID=1299&groupID=1317
A vise grip look and feel , very solid
I was looking/wanting a racheting crimper and thought it was a racheting crimper but i was wrong (i didn't read before purchasing)
This crimper gets the job done :)

Looking at back of the crimper, it has a silver bit that you can adjust for crimping 3 different terminal connector types

What's the 25mm for? Just curious. I have a 1" socket which is the equivalent to 25mm if I recall

Haha I did that with the 2 of the1/4 sizes. But a chrome snap on socket of that size has to be over $40? I think I scraped off the 25mm on my Hansen peg and took a sharpie and wrote 26 on it because my sunex Impact set came with an oddball 26mm

What the heck, who needs a reason to buy a tool? I sometimes buy more because I am worried the others get lonely when I close the drawers at night.

Needed something more powerful to crush the crush washer on my new rear end so I went out and some how came home with this. It did the job.

I have the Facom version of those crimpers from 20 years ago. It remains my "go-to" crimper with good feedback on the crimp and easy 1-handed, small finger release; better than the my 3 other ratcheting from crimpers from Anchor and Facom.
