I know everyone has seen multiple sets of these Chinese brake tools, but at $30, one rebuild of VW rear brakes has paid for it.

Hi Gezginite,

To answer your question: the knurled hex wrenches are definitely beefier, no question about it. But, I still use the rainbow (normal) hex wrenches in the day-to-day at work. The rainbow set is smaller, the color coding is a feature I have really come to rely upon, and they are beefy enough for my uses.

I don't baby my tools at all, and I abuse the PB hex wrenches, and those rainbow wrenches are 20 years old (of daily use) and going strong- tips are all in like-new shape.

Short answer: you can't go wrong with either set, but I find the color coding to be a very valuable feature for hex wrenches.

Matt I am soon going to order a Hex L-keys from PB and was considering the rainbow or the knurled keys so have a few questions I hope you can answer.
1. Do you feel the knurled is better than the rainbow?
2. Do you feel it is worth the extra to get the knurled instead of the rainbow?
3. Is there a noticeable difference in performance?
4. Do you think the knurled is as durable as the rainbow or more durable?

I am buying with durability in mind, so would like the most durable tools (so i buy new tools fewer times - and hopefully only once).

The GearWrench hose pliers arrived today:
bvoVU5p.jpg

I ordered them in case my HF didn't have the Pittsburgh set in stock, and it was too late to cancel once I got back with the HF (which is what I used for the task at hand).

The additional length would have been really useful for that job, and the double-action does open the jaws pretty easily. Since I have a Mini that has a ton of hoses that are sometimes a bit deep, I'm going to keep the GearWrench and give the HF set to a pal.

Tekton metric 12 point 1/2 drive impact sockets and osla rail, need to get a cheap 16mm to fill the gap and may get a 3/8 10mm

Hansen 3 row 3/8 drive socket tray. Put my matco mid-well impacts on it

This will be it for awhile, not making any money with the virus

Not op but to chime in PB Swiss make great hex keys in my opinion the best hex keys out there. With the knurled a little thicker that would only mean they would be stronger, with durability in mind that sounds like a solid choice.

However one thing to keep in mind is that because they are thicker they may not fit into recessed holes(for example a 10mm hole wouldn’t fit these knurled because it’s too wide) But it shouldn’t be a huge problem. With hex(and Torx) you should have multiple variations anyways; 1/4 bits, L-keys, sockets, ball-end, stubby, short/long.

Valid point with using the knurled L-keys into recessed holes - Did not thought about that tbh.

Quote:
This .06mm is just a hair’s difference, but use each of the two extreme examples in the same bolt and you’ll feel an obvious change in grip and movement, and likely see the undersized version cut into the edges of the bolt before it begins to turn.

From this, you can see that Bondhus tools are an obviously brilliant choice if you’re after a snug fitting hex wrench. They also happen to be some of the cheapest available and go against the idea that more expensive is better.

Perhaps the most surprising measurement is that of the PB Swiss hex wrench. These are seen in many pros’ toolboxes and are often thought of as the very best — but while they’re super strong and very nice looking, they don’t, on this showing at least, fit as snugly as Bondhus items that cost ¼ as much.

Have you been using Bondhus and PB?
From the study (the link), it seems like Bondhus is better than PB, but is this also what you guys feel IRL?
I am located in Denmark, where the price is 29$ for Bondhus and 43$ for PB.
The thing is that I do not mind paying more for a product if it is initially better (even if it is just let say 30% better).

The knurled is more “beefier” which I assume would be more durable and therefore the best choice if I look at durability exclusively.

With that said, I see you point in that it is way easier to recognise the size you are going to need with the rainbow due to colorseperation.
Tho, I would give you that, it is crazy that you used the tools daily for 20 years and still surviving - So amazed

A few days ago I searched for that pick on snap-ons website and print catalog, could only find the hardhandle mini hook/picks in the long version. I even asked the snapon guy about them. Do I need to email snapon? I was thinking about getting the Pratt Read set but would rather get the snapon for ease of warranty

Figured while I’m spending more time at home I would see what the Kaizen foam craze is all about. I am starting with my portable box I take to the track. Wish me luck!

Is it me or is GJ actually buying less tools these days? I will blame it all on the Rona virus and associated spouses afraid of delivery packages and crazy Amazon pricing algorithms.

Bought this stuff below the shelter in place from O’Reillys. Walked in looking for one of those black Titan micro roto ratchets everyone was buying. Couldn’t find them but these followed me home.

87bb7b4e8c694ab708a5f72dd33d8d3a.jpg

Finally found quarter inch stubby sockets in chrome. Taiwan made and around $12 a set. You can also turn them with a wrench like the Astro stubbies. Couldn’t seem to find many good options elsewhere.

Here’s a pic vs the ubiquitous 10mm craftsman USA.

25ebee68734e68f16df5736af9beb0b2.jpg

Also bought some Dewalt e torx all is 3/8 drive off of Amazon a few weeks back. More so because I couldn’t seem to find an individual e18 in 3/8 drive without buying an entire set. I also realized I like the same drive size in a set. My VIM deep e torx with mixed 1/4 and 3/8 drive always requires me to be packing two ratchets or running back to the tool cart.

The removable plastic trays fit straight into their (and other) toolboxes as well, which is also a plus.

Yes they were one of the first big makers that thought about the efficiency of tool layout vs how the tool looks in a package. I applaud Facom for continuing to make awesome tools and to keep innovating in such a competitive market.

I was checking the brakes on my 2003 Escalade and some knucklehead ridiculously tightened the caliper bolts. All i had were 3/8 torx bits and i was afraid i was going to break them, so.. And for some reason i dont have a short 1/2 drive 18 mm.

Are those 11mm outer hex? I've been looking for some inch 11mm outer hex sockets that are better than the lackluster Snapon ones and less overpriced than Matco.

Those look like they might come from the same Taiwanese factor as Facom/USAG, Würth, Matco, Tone, Wera, etc. In which case they would fit the bill at about 10% the price of Matco, the ony other one to have an inch set.

Yes keeping 11mm wrenches gainfully employed.

Not sure if they come from the same source as Matco but it is definitely nice to have another option. Hopefully at 10x price the Matcos come with a nicer socket tray.

Picked up my first Snap-On wrenches from Ebay, primarily due to Coronavirus travel restriction boredom. I already have a set of Proto, Tekton and USA Craftsman and I'm interested to see how much better the Snap-ons are.

Also picked up a drill press vice and 13/16" lug nut socket for my Chevy from Amazon.

Lovely. Europeans buy American tools, and Americans buy European. The best of both worlds :)

That lug nut socket also works on Toyota’s.l FYI. It fits tighter than the metric spec and is definitely better to go with. Not too tight that lugs get stuck either.

Sears recently suckered me into buying more tools with a deal I couldn't pass up. Ten percent off already discounted price with a grand total of $263 shipped. So figured why not.

And recently expanded my M12 collection with a Jig & Circular saw. For my use they should work well.

Now where the heck do I put it all???

I’ve got it dialed in and pumping out masks every 2.5hrs.
