What is nice about metric is that you subtract the pitch from the thread diameter, and this gives you the bit size. For M12X1.25 you get 10.75 and round this to a 10.8 bit.
Same thing works in inches.

E.G. for a 1/4“ x 28 UNF thread, simply subtract the thread pitch (.036 or 1/28) from .250, and get the tapping drill size of .214”.

Only exact for 60 degree thread pitch.

Many of us had a card or chart like this in our tool box or hanging on the wall. There is not much overlap of sizes. If my memory serves correctly a majority of the wire sizes (numerical drills) were based around piano wire sizes.

The numbered drills start around 0.040 for a #60 drill (61-80 exist but aren't common) and go up to 0.228 for a #1 drill. The letters start at 0.234 for a letter A drill and end at 0.413. It's a moronic way of classifying drills (and there are even a couple duplicated sizes between the number/letter/fractional drills) but it's how we get a sufficiently complete manifold of sizes with tighter spacing than the common 1/64" fractional steps. And yes, for example the tap drill size for a 10-32 tapped hole is a #21 drill. And the tap drill size for a 5/16-18 tapped hole is a letter F drill.

I would assume the letters were an attempt to standardize on thousandths, as that's how machinists measure their work? Just a wild guess, of course.

Mike

So if I ever have to tap a hole, I am going to study the tap / drill size chart _very_ carefully, then! Thanks for educating me. : )

Thanks to @g13, I have exactly what I was looking for:

That's my SK 10mm above it, which looks to be about 40% taller. Pretty stoked to slap these on the Icon bit driver with a 1/4" bit and see how accessible the 8mm bolts are that were giving me fits a couple weekends ago.

That is interesting. Why do you say that? I have a Honda and I have that tool. In the end, the tool was useless b/c my problem was a loss of tension of the drive belt tensioner.
I've had two of them and just fixed my step daughter's Odyssey. Idle issues in the two I had and the Odyssey was going into limp mode. All were because of screens. Idle controller has a gasket/screen that can get plugged. The Odyssey probably has the same but the gasket/screen on the solenoid the oil pressure screws into needed to be replaced. Honda has versions of these gasket/screens on the transmission also.

I need to get one of those.

I've picked up a mechanics stethoscope to help investigate a high, fluctuating idle on one of my cars. I thought this would be an inexpensive tool worth testing before I try propane or invest in a smoke machine.

There are a bunch of youtube videos showing DIY-built smoke machines. I haven't tried any (yet, but was very close once), but if it's for a one-time use, I'd try this before investing in a machine.

D3F52C3B-D786-4AE3-A491-660097F1CD53.jpegThis is an awesome combination of tools here. The Klein 32907 flip socket is compatible with the Klein 32767 hvac multi screwdriver. Definitely going in the service bag and ordered another get up for the home tool box. No need to order the complete 32907 with the screwdriver handle. Amazon

Picked up another Icon ratchet for the truck.

Found this bench grinder and stand on marketplace, really just wanted the cast iron stand, turns out the grinder runs perfect. 8” half hp the thing must weigh 90lbs, smooth and quiet. I think it needs to be refinished before going into service.

Quinn master 3/8 impact kit. Appears to be identical to Capri. Few bucks cheaper right at Harbor Freight. Blow mold case is about 4x thicker than it needs to be 😕
Sockets and case are different, the extensions and adapters look the same. I bought the Capri one last year, it fluctuates in price. I waited till it was at $87. I probably would get the Quinn with a 25% of coupon if I didn’t already have the Capri.

I bought some stubby wrenches to make my gastank removal job 10x easier. I needed 16mm which meant no skip sets only, Icon was the only choice available within a short drive.

Chrome is nice on all of them, fit was good. No complaints except I didn't have a coupon so I had to pay the full $55 lol.

New to me drill and impact driver with 2 batteries and a charger. I already had the drill, so that goes to the house, to replace a drill that's been at work. Got these off the Mac truck that were trade-ins and I'm his last stop on Fridays, my cost for all, $65. Was available the majority of the day, how no one scooped these is amazing. They work flawlessly.IMG_20230124_154313920.jpg
