siberian huskey proof chicken coop

This was the challenge issued to me by the wife for the w/e.So far we have a 2x6 frame with wire on the bottom and steel fascia around the edges to prevent dig ins.All wire is 2x4 fenceing,doubled around the bottom.Wire is stapled then sandwiched between 2 2x4. Nesting box is 3/4 treated ply There will be lift rings thru the roof for fork truck attachment.. here we are so far...........

She is about the most gentile,laid back dog weve ever had.untill prey is spotted.In the one pic they are digging out a ground squirrel.She will catch birds in mid air,racoons take one shake by the neck,and chickens?,dont know yet,but we dont have any critters around here!Nicething is ,she doesnt run,stays around the place. we leave here out all day sometimes.Two years ago she blew out her rr knee pulling a sled,so we had it replaced.Took here a year to fully recover,but now you would never know it!.

that's what I thought. go with bigger wire and she can't do it will prevent the dog hurting herself while trying.

How many birds in that box?
I'm going to be building a coop behind my shop. I've got a lot of room, so I'm planning on bigger with fewer birds to cut down on odors. I'm thinking 8x10 or 10x12, with half a dozen egg laying birds or so. Maybe a couple of meat birds, don't know yet.

The wife got 6 peepers,but a couple might be roosters.They will go in the pot. General rule is 6 sq ft/bird.This is 4x8,so 4 to 6 would work. The egg box is in addition to the 4x8.

LOL, it's funny how every Husky owner I meet has been down the exact same road at some point in their experience. I thought so too - I got one of the "Fido Shock" small chargers, and after a few unpleasant encounters with it, it was as if I'd thrown down the gauntlet. They worked day and night on the electric fence charger problem, until they figured out that their fur insulated them to some degree, and as long as they didn't touch it with their noses or tongues, they had enough fortitude to just grit their teeth and bear it long enough to plow through. A BIG fence charger from the ranch supply - one that would make a 2000 lb bull cry - got their attention however!

Like I said, good luck. Huskies are never boring, I'll say that much!

My wifes cousin has had a siberian kennel for 25 yrs. he says the only way is use a concete floor and walls 6 ' high,put the husky inside and the chickens outside!

We had up to 8 of them once when I was a kid. One got out and got shot for going after goats, then we moved and our last two got out. But we had heard later that they had been shot for messing with cattle. Just remember if you want to have kids , have the kids first. Huskies will go after kids if the other way around.

I dont know for sure,but I dont think thats typical.This is our first siberian and maybe we just got luckey.she's never seen a pen or a crate.We let her in or out as she wants,and the only time she gets more than a hundred feet from the house is when one of us is outside.when we are she will always be in site of us.she is great with the grand kids,age 3 and 1.she is 4 yrs old and plays like a puppy.I've heard from a lot of other people though,that she must not know what she is.She IS a killer of small animals,but sleeps with our cat.Go figure.

We've had our Siberian for almost ten years and our story is pretty much the same. At two or three years old his "prey drive" kicked in overdrive and if it ran from him, or stood and fought, he figured it deserved to die.

Lamb was his favorite dish in Iceland and we were officially served papers saying if he attacked another animal he would be put down. A torn tendon last summer slowed him down some.

After moving to Virginia we bought two acres and installed an "Innotek" invisible fence. It took a while to train him and find the right combination of system settings and correct collor prongs, but it works and even the sight of deer won't draw him past the boundaries.

I swear I'll never have another Husky...I think. They are awful pretty...and smart...and such personalities...well, if the right one comes along...maybe...

There will be 4 lifting points above the roof,attached to the rafter hangers. I can just drive in on it with the forks (8') on the loader,pick it up ,and move it.This way I can also move it into either the horse barn or shop during the winter months.Pics will be up as I get that far.

That's cool. I always try to think of the worst case scenario when doing projects. I saw that mesh on the floor and was like, "that's gonna grab onto alot of poo."

Know what you mean. the mesh on the floor is to deter dig through's. The black metal is actually pole barn facia turned upside down. This covers the area where the bottom mesh is stapled to the 2x6.

I dont know to much about huskies as a breed. Although ive seen my share of coops destoryed by animals. The best ones are all steel.

nice job. I built mine on wheels so i can move from barn area for summer to side of house for winter. Thats a good idea putting nesting box on outside. I did that too and you just lift roof and get them eggs. I got 10 full size chickens in mine but they are free range during summer. you can't beat fresh eggs. They go great with my piggies too.

hi, i had a snowmobile trailer axle and wheels that i welded brackets to and then bolted to bottom of coop.Made a tongue with a drop in pin so i can move with garden tractor or my 2440 deere. You could do the same for axle but the easiest way , in my opinion, for tongue would be to through bolt to the side of coop with angle iron, heat and bend to shape for hitch part.you could even use that fancy 4 wheeler ! Its amazing how much we spent for some eggs! well worth it. good luck, bob

Well,here it is. Decided to go with wheels,but they need to be retractable or easily removed to allow it to sit flat on the ground. talked to our vet today about the charger,he said dont worry about it,it will just get her attention,not hurt her.I really didnt want to resort to that,but I guess its ok.

I am a runner and a siberian fan. An associate bought a chain link fence and made a 10 x 10 cage for his Sibe, hinged door, posts reinforced by concrete, a very nice job. Left the Husky in the cage and when he got home the entire thing was dismantled, wire rolled back up, pins and connectors scattered all over the yard. Gate had been relocated to the opposite side of the yard and one of the posts was leaning and partially dug out of the ground. The dog was dirty, happy to have destroyed something difficult, and ready for the next challenge. I love these dogs!

My wifes cousin has a siberian kennel. His pens are much like you describe above. The only way he keeps that from happening is to chain them to thier house,with just enough slack to get to the fence , but not enough to "work" on it.Ours doesnt have a kennel,never been in one. She either runs loose or is in the house , so I dont know how she would react to it,but my guess would be to destroy it getting out.
