I would like to buy a pair of side cutters for my mom as a Christmas gift. My mother has been making jewelry and the pair she bought through one the suppliers is a joke. The first pair had a .010 gap between the jaws, the replacement pair she got worked okay for a while but are now dull. I was looking at a pair made by Knipex. I was wondering what everyone's thought was on this brand. Is there a better brand to consider?

I've never used knipex, so I can't say. But Channellock has some really nice ones. No jaw gap or side play, pretty sharp. USA made. Can't go wrong for $20

I really like Channellock tools and think they're a great value. That being said, if you really want to get a top notch pair of pliers/cutters, you can't go wrong with Knipex if you're willing to pay the price.

If she likes comfort style handles I would go knipex. I have just started breaking in a pair of c-locks and have no complaints. I like the knipex design a bit more because the cutting edges are a bit longer. I would stay away from MAC though, they dulled quickly.

Pay attention to what the cutters are designed to cut and what she is cutting for her jewelry. Some are only good for soft metals and if harder metals (SS or...) are on the menu, you need cutters for doing that. She may need more than one pair...

Also, does she need them to be flush cuttng (for a flatter end of wire) or not?

Snap-On Part 7in Cutters # 87CF
I have those and the 11in. Heavy Duty ones. When you hold them you will automatically fell quality. They are built very sturdy and have great leverage. There is no play in their joints either. The way the cutting jaws are designed give you more pressure applied at the tips for precise cutting. Unlike most other cutters, the Snap-On cutters do not spread the force applied trough the entire jaw length and therefore making your cutting effort easier. Also when you need to cut bigger things, you can move what ever you're cutting toward the rear of cutter for more leverage.

Bought my girlfriend a pair last year for the very same reason. She had been using my pair of 6" Knipex and liked them a lot, but didn't want me to pay the Knipex price for her pair. I picked up a small pair of Channellocks at HD and she hated them. They weren't easy enough for her to cut through the wire she was cutting with her small hands. I took them back and ordered another 6" pair of Knipex just like mine from Amazon. She loves them!

I got's lots of cutters (diagonal pliers). Unfortunately, they're all **** and they all work fine. I don't know why I keep buying them but I own a bunch of them. I use them to cut wire but I have other stuff that works just as well.

So since she's probably an older lady maybe get her something with a comfort grip. Maybe spring loaded?

These ones look pretty good in my opinion.

If you get the knipex make sure it's the comfort grip rather than the "dip" grip. If you want US I don't think either channellock or knipex are. There's a lot of variance in price (but not really quality, honestly) so check them out in store before you spend 40 bucks for a pair of pliers.

For handle comfort, go for the Facom diagonal cutters.

But, like Outlaw said, make sure they're correct for the material.
There are the 192.16TE, 192.18CPE and other small varations; not sure which is which.

How about the knipex mini bolt cutters? Those look freaking awesome. As mentioned, careful on what you cut vs what you buy. Majority of the standard diagonal cutters are designed for soft material and will get nicks in the edges from cutting hardened steel and the like.

What material and diameter range is she cutting? Cleanly cutting real thin wire can be a pain.

Take into consideration your Mom's hand size; what may be right for you or me may not be right for her. I can think of plenty of side cutters that are too small for my hands, and some that are ridiculously too big.
