Side of house spaces...

I am clearing a space on the side of my house: 14 feet by 25 feet. This space connects to one wall of my 3 car garage.

Has anyone built any type of outside garage, or garage with a canopy connected to thier main garage?

I'm in southern california, so weather is not an issue.

thanks,

Sounds like a "breezeway." Covered area with open ends. Assuming the 14' measurement is the distance between the house and the garage you should end up with a nice covered parking place for one vehicle. Or patio parties. A lot will depend on the orientation and construction of the existing roofs. But it should be doable.

Most likely some code issues.
But a heavy duty, nice looking, white tarp would probably not offend the neighbors too much.

In SoCal, an arbor between the house and garage would give you a shady spot in the summer. Grapes are nice. If you grow something that drops its leaves in the winter, you'll have more sun in the cooler months, less when it's hot.

If you want a real roof, in SoCal you don't need to worry about snow load, so a lightweight frame with a slight pitch, covered with lightweight corrugated steel or corrugated fiberglass roof is enough to keep the rain off. Make sure it's fastened securely if you have seasonal winds though.

photo's of the progress...

I've attached two before photos, and one photo as of today.

The main work was moving the dirt from the planter to my backyard, then build the appropriate retaining wall.

I still have to finish the right side fence, add concrete, then maybe pavers. Lastly, build a two door gate, once small one for the wife, one large one for the car so that I can get the car out easily.

My reasoning for building this was that I had this large planter area taking up space when I really needed room for my car that could sit behind a new fence. I'll post updates after the weekend when most of it should be done...

Updated photo's.. I really like the extra space, which was previously utilized by a planter with dying plants. The space is working out great for my son to ride is bike in the back yard. The newer space is now about 25ft long by 13ft wide.

I created a small 3 foot door that swings into the backyard, and a 10 foot door that swings towards the front of the house, it rests on two medium sized wheels. Thereby allowing easy access for a project car if needed....

I am doing another fence on the other (right) side to create a space between that neighbor and my house. Once all is done it should look more even...

I've had the 928 since March 2008. I was into 60's cars for a few years, but the 928 has reminded me why I like modern power, fuel injection, etc.

Yeah, I've been a member of rennlist once I realized that I saved quite a bit of money asking advice on DIY repairs.

Redwood stain is really red...

The Redwood stain/sealer/protectant is really red. It almost matches the red roof. I bought a 5 gallon drum of it, so I guess I'm keeping the color...

928's are the ultimate touring cars, and they are a bargain for the advanced technology you get. I heard the sound of a 928 engine and just had to get one.

Thanks guys, the stain didn't turn out perfect, but I'll apply another coat and fix the problems later.

Yes, I own a 8 cylinder porsche. How many cylinders do you have in your Porsche...?

None any more. Mine was a 911 that actually belonged to the wife. I was just astounded at the snottiness of some air cooled Porsche owners mindset towards water cooled Porsches. Heck, they all started life in Zuffenhausen

Being a bit of a Porsche fan myself, and even though we are talking about the 928, I can't help but make a comment/correction. All 924's and most 944's (Turbo models included) were built in Audi's Neckarsulm plant. Of the 4-cylinder, water cooled models, I believe only the 968 was built in Zuffenhausen.

Are you still thinking of attaching somthing to the house? Your space is up front and can be seen by the code enforcement from the city. I would be reluctant to attach something to the house, but what about attaching or building something from the fence toward the house that would cover and shade??? If designed strong enough you may be able to get the house eve to overlap the fence build???

Re: Redwood stain is really red...

Nice job. I wish i had that space on the side of my house just so i could dump all the lawn stuff and the kid's bikes and such. Will you have to drive over the lawn to get the car in there? I assume there is no problem clearing the palm tree and will be able to stay?

Very nice job on the added fence / structure. It looks well built and asteticly pleasing.

With that being said, where I live the HOA would be all over that structure. The fence size here is limited to 6' and can not come out further than the front face of your neighbors house. If that were the case on your end, you would not have been able to extend forward. I can not believe that TX requirements would be more stringient than those of areas of CA. :headscrat

I have one that is 7' wide by 24' long and ~5'10" tall to get by the HOA "strollers". I use the storage for all of the misc items (bikes, lawn equipment, etc) that used to be in the garage, but is not worth taking pictures.

Best of luck with the rest of the build.
