I'm planning to remodel and put an addition on our home. I see the need for a siding brake and would prefer to own one rather than to borrow or rent. I already have a large assortment of carpentry tools and would like to add a siding brake. I understand that they are expensive, but the convenience of owning one that is always available to use will justify the cost. I have tried to find a used one on Craigslist or eBay but have had no luck. Does anyone have a lead on a good used one? My other option is to buy one, what brands should I be looking for. I only have minimal experience using one, so would like some advice on what to look for. This will probably only see minimal use, so I don't need anything too fancy.

I just bought a Van Mark Trim A Brake on craigslist for a decent price. Tapco also makes a very good brake. If you buy used make sure it's not abused, best thing to do is take a piece of coil and try it to see if it bends ok.

I bought my PRO 14 10.5' Tapco from Modern Builder Supply. Not only was there a rebate going on but if you applied for a MBS card, you could get 6 months interest free.

I recently bought a tapco 2 for $400.00. It needed a handle and a tuneup but is working fine. I made a pair of handles from pipe rather than one homemade and one factory. I see them fairly often in the $800 -1,200 range.

Tapco and Van Mark are the dominant manufacturers.

Buying used is probably sketchy as the used brake was probably abused and "sprung". I would second bringing a long piece of coil stock and bending it as a test.

Both manufacturers sell "tune up kits".

It will probably take time to find one in good condition.

I've been on the lookout for a good 10' brake and every one I find used is BEAT. I need to bend lead coat copper to make door pans and flashings so it needs to be capable of 22 gauge/ 20 oz. material so it needs to be heavy duty. I don't do any aluminum work, so I haven't been in a big hurry to buy one, just paying my fabricator to make them gets to be a pita because it's always on his schedule.
