Siding on garage wall

Hello, I am finishing my garage and I was thinking of putting some vinyl siding on the wall for when washing cars. I was wondering, can I hang it on drywall, or do I need to hang OSB instead. Thank you.

Vinyl siding is not Water Proof. I would look into FRP.

Is correct. Notice the drain holes on the bottom of each piece. It needs to be installed over a wind and moisture barrier.

I did some work at a car rental place and they had steel siding on the walls in the wash bay.This was a metal building panels.

I believe this material is made to be installed over sheetrock and is used in wet areas, Menards carries it.

I have some samples of that at work. Nice stuff, but over kill for this I think. It is marketed for food/ meat plants. As I said FRP. This is what is usually installed in car wash bays/ paint booths.

I had forgotten all about that stuff, we installed it in a few bathrooms years ago, I'll bet it is much cheaper than those other panels too. I know that material can be glued directly to sheetrock.

Thanks, I was just wondering since I have a couple boxes of used siding from when we replaced done damaged panals.

Vinyl siding would work just fine, but I would either put some 15# felt or 30# felt paper behind it, or put some heavy visqueen behind it before hanging the siding. I'd also put it over OSB instead of drywall. If the drywall is already up though, paint it real well with a gloss outdoor paint to seal it, then either the felt or the visqueen, then the siding. Lap you siding away from the direction that you would be spraying the most from.

May I suggest that you use tyvek instead of felt paper, no offence Kevin54............after a lot of years installing siding (vinyl, aluminum, and hardi) felt paper is OK for use behind bricks but tyvek is far superior for behind vinyl. Drywall is OK if its the exterior type, but also remember that if anything hits the siding it will break the drywall easily as opposed to OSB.
And some tips, don't forget to not nail it tight against the wall, it expands and contracts a lot as well as not installing it tight against each other and your corners.
Have seen so many ripply walls do to not allowing for expansion or contraction
