Looking for opinions on siding options. I really like the board and bat look but am thinking of certanteed or hardi plank. I have read mention of staining these products, anybody know if it can duplicate cedar colored board and batt?

I am after a barn type look as the building will have widow peaked gable ends and a cuppola.

Thanks for any ideas.

I did lots of research and settled on hardiplank. It's a cement product so you have to prime it and paint it. The product is a dull white color so a simple stain would not look natural. In the desert where I live the hardiplank will last 60 or more years while cedar siding would be done in 10 years.

Are you in a wet or dry part of Oregon? If I were in Portland or on the western side of the state I would strongly consider wood. It's readily available and if kept up should last a very long time. Best of all it has a natural beauty that fiber cement can't match.

It will be in Central Oregon...high desert. We still get a fair amount of snow at this elevation, but it is very dry. I like hardi-plank also but am actually building a barn/house...so I was after a barn kinda cabin feel.

Thanks

I don't think you'll be able to stain/paint Hardi to look like cedar regardless of cedar's length of and type of exposure. That's why I just painted mine. !00% Hardi Board and Batten.

My experience with the hardi plank is about 12 years running now on the same coat of paint with a few joints re-caulked and not other touchup or need of paint. Vs. the cedar siding I have which appears to need paint every 4-6 years. Love the hardi.

I have hardiplank and certainTeed trim. I think this is the way to go... The hardiplank comes painted and has a textured look of wood... My problem was wood siding did not keep the stain or paint well on my outbldgs... Moisture from the inside out of board caused peeling and rot. That wont happen w/ the cement board products.
Also the warrantee is a lot of yrs.. and a repaint later extends the warrantee.
Spend time in the garage or spend time with the siding sooner....
