I going to be using 4x8 panel siding w/battens on my upper gable ends and my dormers. Looking at the install instructions it says to only be used on 16" centers. My shear walls are all done with 7/16 OSB and the panel will be going over the sheathing. Can it be installed on 24" centers? Or do I need to place a call to the manufacturers? thx matt

Assuming the framing is still open internally it may be worth cutting some 2x to stiffen the gable ends and provide the correct nailers. Your framing is solid at the 24". Cut some 2x4', slap some PL400 on the faceon it and screw it to the sheathing. Otherwise you end up, potentially with wavy siding and as my GC friend says, "When it waves at you, all you can do is wave back."

If the panels are going over the OSB --- that's fine .... it sounds as if the panel could be used alone and need 16" centers.

What are the panels === do they need a rain screen?

Yes, The panels can be used for shear walls and that's why I questioning the nailing. They call for 6" centers on the perimeter nailing which is for the shear walls. thx for the answers matt

I think if you nailed off the OSB @ 6" on center across panel edges and 12" across the field then you can do whatever you please with the siding panels. Good idea to attach them to the framing though to keep it stuck to the most rigid structure and not have sharp points sticking thru the sheathing.
