Hi,

So I am going with cedar siding for the garage...6" lap siding.

I am putting a 1x10" trim board along the bottom...is there some kind of "drip edge" for that trim board that I need...some kind of L shaped do dad that tucks up and in behind the siding that keeps water from getting behind the trim board and also doubles as a sort of starter strip for the first run of siding?

What's the official name of that piece?

Thanks!
Patrick

What you are looking for is 3/4"drip cap, it typically comes in 42", 48" and 10' lengths. I am not aware of any product that doubles as a starter strip as well. You would do well to keep the starter strip up off the flashing by about 1/4" when you install it. Many times if you lay out your siding job, the strip you will end up ripping off the last course will make a fine starter strip, so check out your layout and see what you're going to end up ripping off the last course. Another tip when installing any type of lap siding is to flash each **** joint with a strip of building felt so that any wind driven rain will drip out onto the previous course. Do use good quality stainless steel ribbed siding nails.

You can also use a Z Channel style Drip Edge. This goes behind the Siding and comes over the Edge of the Starter Course. In the Northwest you can never have enough Flashing or water stoppers.

I remember years ago watching This old House, they were using some wood siding. They had a starter strip of some kind, but I can't remember what it was. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I make mine out of 2x2 clear. It has the starter strip, and drip cap combined. Don't forget the return cut on the bottom edge.

It's simple to make and you can customize it to your project.
