Hi,
I have dreamed and planned for years to have my dream shop built, and now it will happen, signed contract today. Retired 6/17 moved to Heathsville Va. from Bay Shore, NY. this past July. Shop will house bikes, vintage modified project, 65 el camino and 66 chevy pick up, plus fabrication equipment, tools and the required refrigerator. I have read numerous posts here, picked up some knowledge and will probably be posting questions in the future regarding projects and garage set up. Building will start early June, just a shell with a concrete floor, I will take it from there. I can't contain my excitement, my wife was tired of hearing about this project years ago, I needed to post, this is my first one. I'm glad garage journal is here for me to share my excitement, thanks.

welcome Frank,

We lived in Callao and the father in law is in Heathsville, small world. We have been going up a lot more as he lost his wife last month and needs our help. His garage was completed last year and we are working on compressor and air lines this week. He is 88 and still wants to piddle.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

I'm in Fredericksburg. Wife says "I'm cooped up let's go for a ride." Looks like I have a place to aim for.

Add a floor mounted urinal.

As we get older the "need.to.go" will be more frequent. Besides, with the refrigerator being stocked with..........

Congrats on the dream.

I know you already signed the contract but you should figure out what you can do to allow for a future lift. Change one truss, raise the side walls. do something. Otherwise congratulations, hopefully you will be healthy enough for the next 30 years to enjoy it.

I was about to say the same thing. You will want to figure out how to get a section with 12-13' of clearance for a lift and it will never be easier or cheaper than right now.

Congrats on the new building. I built mine 40 x 50, but I think 36 x 60 would have been a better choice. My ceilings are just a bit over 12 foot and I have a two post lift. How did I ever survive without one? The one thing I would do if I were doing it over - Use a different truss to get more ceiling height. I don't need it, but if I had done a scissors truss, I could have had enough height for a full size motorhome. I don't have a motorhome and probably never will, but it would be a selling point when the time comes.

The cost for flat bottom trusses is the same as for scissors. Go scissors unless you need the overhead storage. Depending on your layout, you could go scissors on part and flat on the other part. Best of both worlds.

Thanks for all the comments. A two post lift would be nice, no plans for one now or in the future. I guess I like crawling around on the floor. My shop will have one single post bike lift, and two bike lift tables. No motor home, and no plans to purchase one, I will let the kids worry about the selling points when that time comes. My previous garage was a 24'x24', we constantly had to move vehicles in and out, 3 race cars, and 6 bikes to have any room to work safely. One race car was always stored outside under a tarp. The el camino and truck were always parked outside as well, the NY weather is sometimes harsh, now all my toys will have a roof over them. When the shop is up any locals are welcomed to stop by. I will post pictures after it is up, and I start setting it up.

strongly suggest your plan for the lift, even if it never comes it will be a possibility,
and to modify the trusses in the future, will

in a corner,of the building, in the concrete consider placing a toilet flange and a 2" pipe for a a sink drain, even possibly a floor drain that could be used for a shower, even if all it does is just exit the building for now, I have a restroom in the barn?shop, and it is used a lot, (I took a play out of the RV book, and placed the floor drain out in front of the toilet, and put in a shower in the toilet/shower stall, (yes it is wise to remove the toilet paper before using the shower, sink is just out side of the shower stall,
in the warm room I have a small apartment stove, a refrigerator, and a microwave, and a large table, when cold it is nice to have a place to work on small things, and stay warm there is even a tv and an easy chair.

draw out or take a sheet of large paper, possibly even graff it out in 1" squares, and draw out the walls of the shop, take light cardboard, and take your floor tools and cut out pieces of the size of them in scale (possibly even better, make a simple model of the items), and your benches, and even a possibly future break room, even the cars and other items you wish to store,

and see how it will fit and to have better idea of how to arrange the layout and how the flow of the building will be,

depending on the trusses and such, there may be room for a storage area above the break room and such,

I realize you have a fair size building but it is amazing on how fast a building can fill up and some times, some planing can save a lot of frustrating in the future,

my shop is smaller but is about 30 x 48, I have sections that are more themed, in purpose, up by the large door is the tire corner, and on the other side is the welding and metal fabrication corner, the back 16 foot of the shop has a floor above it and storage, under the lower part one corner is the machine shop, lathes and milling machine, an a valve grinder, the other corner, is benches and a few work islands (a sharping center for chain saws), and an area for presses and a bench grinder,
in the shed behind the shop is the break room and restroom so in a sense my main show is or only a few feet narrower, than your but about the same depth when you take the sheds in to play, (I have side sheds as well, and one of them is filled with sheet metal equipment,

my entire barn/shop, is a footprint of 60' x 65', (main shop area is 30' by 48') with 16 foot sheds on three sides, and storage area above the 30' x 48' with a second storage area above the back of the shop 16' x 30',

and the wood shop is in another building,

all I am saying it seems and will look larger now, but by the time you put a few cars in it and some tools and other stuff, it will fill up fast,

some planing could be a very good idea, (even just for how to lay out the electrical needs, and where to run air lines, place fire extinguishers, lighting, even the best place to put doors, heating if that is in the plan, even windows,

(my son in law helped build pole buildings at one time, and they were taking about putting in windows, and the guy walking through the building said I want the window right here, so they put the window in right there, outside of the building was huge power pole to look at, LOL)

Thanks for the thoughts handyfarmer. I have been planning this project for several years, it originally was going to be 30x48 and after laying everything everything on graph paper I realized I needed a larger building. I settled on a 36x64x10. I have also made an electrical diagram for lighting interior/exterior, welding and convenience outlets, service to machinery, hvac, etc. I do have an area set aside for a couple of easy chairs, fridge/microwave, tv and stereo. I will not be able to install a toilet, building location is close to property line, well, and roadway, the house is close, would be nice if it was possible. The building will have 7 windows, one walk through door and a 12x8 door in the center of 64' side. One side for the race car, machinery, wood working and welding area. The other side will have the bike area, sitting area, bike parking, and clean area for engine work. I am building carriage doors and a walk through door to match. I am in the process of designing the air system including an air dryer. No car lift now or later. No above storage either, I also have a detached two car garage, and a 12x20 shed, it is just the wife and I. We downsized before we moved down here. I agree that it will probably fill up fast, I will just have to control my addiction to buying bikes, equipment, and race cars. I have sickness that is only cured with more toys. I was just looking at another vintage modified and trying to see if it fits in my budget. I am retired, so my spending is also restricted. I do have a spot for future metal lathe, I would love to own another bridgeport mill. I even planned for the fire extinguishers, I also plan on running an outside hose spigot from the nearby well. Thanks for the ideas.

Your building, your money. But a 4 post lift would let your store two cars in the space of one if you had the height. You already acknowledge that you have an addiction to buying things so..... But again your building, your money.

Welcome aboard!

Have to agree with the others about more ceiling height. On my 4th shop now and each one has increased in height, 10'-11.5'-14' and now 17.5' tall. The first was either 30x40-12 or 32x48-10. Since all my stuff fit(at the time) height wise I went with more floor space and within 2 yrs I was trying to figure out how to raise the roof. I always recommend building a smaller tall shop first, easier to add on a lower section later and tie it in.

Crawling around the floor wasn't bad, then I got old(er).

No boat storage, shrink wrap, and store outside. Just bought a delta unisaw, I will pick it up in a week or so. Ordered blue stone today for the concrete work which starts on Monday, waiting for electric service.
