I was just not watching some BS show on Speed while surfing. It had something to do with West Coast Customs.

Their was a blue Mac toolbox on there in the background that was so tall you would need a step ladder to see into the top drawers.

Is it just me or is that stupid?

Does anyone here have a box so tall that they can't see into it? If so, explain yourself. :headscrat

I much prefer a large roll cab that I can use the space on top as a work station as opposed to a sky high box, with that said it seems like its always the short guys that have the really tall boxes which is pretty funny to me.

LOL, add that to the collection of big guns and long camera lenses.

That's one of the reasons I don't have a middle box in my set. It would have made the top box hard to see in the top drawers.

I made a boo-boo. When I bought my first box (Craftsman), it was on sale. I went in for the 8 drawer bottom, and the 12 drawer top, and I knew what middle I wanted. They had a demo of it and I gave them the number, and no one there had ever noticed it.:wtf: It is a 4 drawer, full depth intermediate. So when assembled, it was above my eye level.

However, the shop has always kept a little homemade, 2x4 footstool, for times of need with larger (4x4) vehicles. I just decided that would be a good thing next to the toolbox, until I got another cabinet, to move the top over to.

I don't really have much choice. I don't have the floor space for a big enough rollcab. My top box is pretty high; I can see into the top drawer, but just barely, and I'm 6'2". I can only open the top lid a few inches, or it hits the hanging ceiling light (new garage in the works will have 12' ceilings though.) But.....the real problem is potential injury. Every time I open one of the top drawers I have to remind myself not to leave it open for even a minute. The sharp corners at head level could cause some serious pain if I walked into it by mistake.

Haha. I saw that too. I was thinking that it was the sign of a problem that I was watching the show to see the toolboxes...

But yeah, that thing was HUGE. And the guy who was using it had to be 5'5" or so. The top quarter of the box was probably off limits for him!

I had to use the top of my Kennedy roll cab, as a small work bench, when working next to the large traction motor stands.
It would have been a major PIA otherwise?

Lots of people probably have limited floor space. What the mfg.'s ought to do is put the deep drawers up at the top instead of the bottom, and then put cabinet doors on them instead. It would be like your kitchen, and you could put larger items up top that only need a glance to identify them, or lesser used stuff to minimize tip-toes or stepladders.

Skyline, that is one SWEET setup right there. :thumbup

A friend of mine has the biggest toolbox i've ever seen. I don't know if it's a Mr. Big or just two big KRLs together, but it's 13' wide and near enough 6' tall. Like a Snap-on Mr. Big, with two top boxes and two side lockers. It's literally a wall of tools, but it's out of neccessity, as it's absolutely full.

Personally, i like to have a top box, bottom box, full-height side locker (on the right) and a bottom box-height side locker (on the left). Been lusting after a KRL for a while. Just can't afford it. :(

I posted this one awhile back... our Porsche Master Tech's box... yes it full. When open the hutch area is lined with tools on pegboard as well. The upper hutch is used for books and other storage. Oh and yes.. its 30" deep.

I like having a top box to put all of my commonly used tools in because I hate bending over to grab tools when it could be right in front of me. Then again I really like having some counter space on my box so I can't really say which way I would go.

BTW I measured and my tool chests open top area is right at 5'. I would probably go 5' 2" for the top box. My dads one box goes to 5' 4" and it is slightly hard to see what is in the top of it if your searching for something.

Skel, I don't have the money or the room, but if I did, I'd have a box so big I'd need a Kenworth to move it around. Till then, my 3 C-man boxes & 1 work station will have to do.

i went with what most people here have is a simple 26in c-man top and bottom drawer combo, after having it for a while and looking at what other people have at the shop. I really hate myself for getting this and not getting a wider like a 40in bottom only. I really envy all the other techs that have a usable workspace on top of their toolbox, i mean i had a workbench but it was shared with my bay neighor and being the noob they took space off my workbench to put the charging dock/printer for the scantool.

if i every out grow a 40" or the 52/56" boxes i guess i would aim for a triple bay but not a upper box, i like the hutch thing of the master tech posted above. I highly doubt anyone can have that many tools to fill it up. I cant see how wide that top drawer is, the lift post blocks where a split in the drawer could be, if there isn't a split god that would be a pain in the **** to open and close.

The top drawer is split in the middle right behind the racks. The box is probably a good 16' long. Doubt if you want.. but its full. Keep in my alot of them are specialty tools for Porsche as well as tech manuals, etc. Speciality cars require speciality tools....

I just got rid of my 4 draw intermediate unit because it would have cause me to have issues seeing everything easily in the top of my top box on top of my Lisa cabinet. using aid to find tools in a box is out of the question for me I usually work very close to my box when at work only a step at most away. there are lots of situations that i have to hold one thing with one hand and get a tool ot part with the other.

That by FAR has to be the most extreme tool collection that I will probably ever see. What kind of work does a guy have to do to even afford that many tools. DAMN.. I love it.

Proved to be too big to have around corporate jets, so I had to get to a lower profile.

I looked through the pics of the contents, there's a lot of wasted space in there. He could fit all that stuff in one rollcab with a top box an single side locker. Look at spidergearsman's toolbox, i bet he has more stuff in his box and it's half the size of that one.

You could, just like dad had all the tools for the farm in a 26" sears combo. The problem is, every friggin drawer was filled to the top, and you had to dig out each drawer to find what you wanted each time.

I doubt I have any more tools in my 60" box, but I can find any specific tool, blindfolded, in about 2 seconds. I often reach up from a creeper without ever looking in the drawer and grab a tool.

Heck, I'm "out of room" in the 56" and 36" toolboxes I have. I'm sure I could get it all in a 26" combo, but I would be hating life every time I had to deal with it.

You would've loved working with my old 26" top box. It was pretty packed towards the end of my owning it. I knew where everything was, but like you said it can be a pain digging for stuff. I'm just a bit OCD with this stuff. Instead of having two boxes with wasted space i'd save the money for the second and spend it on more tools to fill the first box up! :)

This is the old box a few hours into pulling the dash on our Golf:

Yeah...I'm getting a nervous tick just looking at that. There is one guy on my crew, that I absolutely refuse to get a tool out of his box for him. As soon as I open the drawer, my brain goes to the blue screen of death, and I just blank out.

This is getting to high for me.

1176585583-BigToolBox.jpg

I like the step on slides under that one.

I have the other problem. At 6'5" any thing below knee high is a literal pain in the back to get at. My most used tools start at the top and move down to least used.
