Hi there, I know this is an old thread, but it seems to be a pretty hot topic here; I found these two threads also from 2020 and 2015:
I am looking for a simple, effective way to remind me that my garage door is open. Yep, I've reached that dim age when I keep finding it open — sometimes in the evening, sometimes in the morning. :p I have tons of fab and electronics experience and will just build one if I can't find a...

I can't believe no one has stated the most clear and obvious answer. Get a new wife.... Isn't this garagejournal? ;) Retrain the wife. Tell her if the door is left open you get a BJ, then get a remote and open it right after she closes it. Then it won't bother you so much when she leaves it open.

This topic is a passion of mine, because I too shared the frustration of trying to find something on the market and was unhappy with all of the options... the best thing I found was this:
https://garagedoorminder.com/ -- but it has a lot of problems; pretty pricey, and when the battery dies you have no way of knowing if the battery is dead or the garage is just closed (because it only transmits the state when the garage is open...)
There are some other options with similar problems, like

This led me to build a more modern solution, with signal strength and battery indicators, but still keeping the SUPER SIMPLE functionality of just a transmitter and receiver which talk locally to eachother. I use LoRA and clever firmware so that the sensor can last 1 year on AA batteries while always transmitting the state to the indicator stick -- you can find my website at

I'd appreciate any feedback!!
