If you're looking for a product that works great and is safe to use on aluminum then get some of this and give it a try. I recently acquired a 1990 (first year) Miata (one owner) that had 26 years of gunk buildup in the engine compartment. Amazingly, the rest of the car was in good shape.

I wanted to detail the engine bay but I also wanted a product that would not damage the aluminum cam cover and the other aluminum parts. I had some of this I had had for several years but never used. This stuff gets the job done and will not harm aluminum.

Here's my engine bay after 8 hours in my detail shop. BTW, it was safe on the paint as well.

Nice work!! Looks brand new! What techniques did you use on cleaning? Just spray on and scrub down? I usually use purple power or power clean in the same style. Soak everything down and let sit. Then come back after 15mins or so with a soft brush and a tooth brush to do the scrubbing. Cast aluminum is usually the hardest to get clean and I end up using carb cleaner in those areas.. If this is the similar steps that you took then Im more impressed that it did not damage the decals, ink & paint stampings as that is usually the first things to let go in my experiences. I have also used oven cleaner on suspension parts as well.. If you are into this sort of thing you can see the preservation project I have been working on here.. No doubt about it this type of work is time consuming. Great job!

Nice job OP, I've been using SG for years with the same kind of results.

Brother, I highly suggest you move away from Power Purple, that stuff will eat the finish off everything. I had an experience ten years ago that to this day still burns my ***. While on a track day at Willow springs I blew my power steering pump out and coated my entire engine bay with fluid. So I headed over to the closest part store around and the only thing they had for cleaner was that ****. So I headed back to the track and proceeded to start cleaning. Sprayed it on, let it soak and then proceeded to hose off all the anodized finishes as well as destroyed the finish on my polished manifold. To this day it still makes me sick thinking about it. Simple Green has never once caused me any grief.

I agree on the the polished & anodized items.. I guess I should have been more clear on what I used for my preservation thread. the purple power/power clean was used on heavy greased areas (suspension components etc). I would not suggest like you said. If you look at my thread I only used a citrus degreaser, oxyclean and other similar cleaners on sensitive areas. Regardless I completely understand and agree with your post.
