Hey guys, I have a real good stumper for me. I am doing the preliminaries on the garage and need to know the square footage of my yard/house and new garage.

I am in Canada and we use metric but I did convert for you/me

Yard
17.4 meters (57.08 feet) X 40.33 meters (132.3 feet) now in feet it works out to 7553 square feet, and in metric it is 701.7 square meters.

House
7.38 meters (24.2') X 12.25 meters (40.2') In feet it works out to 972 square feet or 90.41 square meters.

No this is where it gets beyond me. If you convert 701.7 square meters to Square feet you get 2302.17 square feet not 7553 square feet.

I must be doing something wrong and to the life of me, I can't figure out what it is. I have the updated regulations for building in my area and I am allowed to cover 40% of my lot with buildings, including the house.

PLEASE someone let me know the correct answer.

40% of 7553 square feet is 3021.2 square feet
40% of 701.7 square meters is 280.68 square meters

280.68 converted to square feet is 920.866

huge difference from 920 square feet to 3021 square feet huh?:lol_hitti

Thanks for helping me out with this. I think it is something simple but I'll be damned if I can get it to work

Rob

There is 10.764 square feet per square meter and you are using 3 square feet as the conversion number when converting from square meters to square feet. That is why you are coming up with the wrong numbers.
701.1 sq meters x 10.76 = 7545.5 sq feet.

I hate metric conversions aswell. I get around this by using my Google toolbar to do the conversions for me.

Type in the search bar:

701.42 meters squared to feet squared

You get:

701.42 (meters squared) = 7 550.02204 feet squared

Pretty handy when you're trying to figure out development allowances that go from metric to imperial and back to metric.

you guys are great, see simple for you but for me I was about to set up a 6foot rope from a 20' ceiling and a tall stool. I just couldn't figure out WTF was going on. Thanks guys

geez there goes the get rich quick scheme of finding worm hole in the universe :spit:

Rob

on a side note I was getting pretty mad when I thought I could only build a 24X24 garage and tear down a 26X26 to bring the building into code

woohoo the skys the limit, well the sky can only be 16'4" (5 meters)

and exterior walls do not exceed 9"2" (2.8 meters)

:bounce:hi Hit - I'm in Canada too and built my shop last summer. At NO time did I EVER see metric used. Not by me, any contractors or the city! We may talk the talk, but we don't walk the ...Kilometer!
Actually, the first time I EVER saw area expressed in metric was on some Rustoleum Floor Epoxy I just bought! Really, first time!
