Hi,

Just wonder if anyone has ever used Simpson Strong frame for a garage door or large opening. I am getting ready to start an addition to my garage. Due to zoning requirements I can only add a 12' wide bay to the garage. I wanted to install an 11' wide door to make it easier to get a MH in. With conventional framing I can only go 10' wide. This will not leave me much room to get the MH in. With the Simpson Strongframe I could go with an 11' door. The drawback is I was quoted anywhere from 8 to 15K for the frame. This was just quoted as rough pricing from the factory. Out of my price range. If you have bought one what was the price. I am looking for a 11' wide by 12' high opening.

I presume the strong walls were called out by the engineer. A custom moment frame should be quite a bit less expensive. The Simpson frames are way to expensive. Ask for a new design.

This is a great idea. I recall reading that the seismic codes in SF were recently updated and that the Simpson systems are high dollar but pay off primarily for retrofit scenarios.

I've called out Simpson Strongwalls of all types on plans as the engineer specifies. I think the last wood ones were $3-400 in comparison. I've not seen the price of a Strongframe, but a conventional engineered and built frame probably will be much less than your quote. It's just the time to get it done - which could be months.

Simpson makes a couple of different shear wall products that are not as extreme as the Strongframe.
