it's one of the next things on my list is to get one of these with a flex hose. Can anyone give me a crash course on what's probably going to be out there used?

I just bought two from two separate pawn shops. One was $40 with a hose and torch about 1/4 full. The other was a little over 1/2 full I paid $15 for. If you are planning on using it for cutting with oxy, you should go with propane. You can use a regular bbq tank. I don't know all the info, but acetylene tanks have to be inspected every so often and some places require proof of original ownership before being filled/swapped. You can go down to stop & shop tonight and get a propane tank if you ran out. I didn't know much about propane/oxy cutting before buying my tanks, but once my acetylene tanks do empty, I'm going propane.

Turbo Torch makes a decent torch and it seems to be the dominant torch in that market.

Otherwise it looks like the usual suspects: Victor, Harris, and Smith all make them. Prest-o-lite used to be one of the big players as well.

I'm just gonna be looking for a used unit for general shop heating, no cutting of any kind. I see them come up (usually propane i think?) on cl for less than $100 from time to time...but not sure what I'm looking at.

The Goss Target Torches are really nice. Quick change stainless tips with a built in replaceable filter. Comfortable handle. I have one with several smaller tips for soldering/brazing and a big one for heating. The nicest A/A torch I've ever used. Not cheap.

The regular Goss "Feather Flame" torches are good as well, and much cheaper.

There probably isn't a huge difference in brands, but I've used them all and like Goss the best.

With the price of acetylene, it might be worth looking into oxy propane setups. Costs a little more initially for the extra regulator and hoses, and isn't as portable, but everybody has an extra BBQ tank laying around, and oxygen refills are half the price. Bonus, you can also cut with it. If that's overkill, you can get a lot done (working with copper pipe, heating stuck bolts, etc.) with just a cheap handheld propane/Mapp torch, and it's cheap enough to keep a couple spare gas bottles around for when you inevitably run out on Saturday afternoon and the welding supply place isn't open again till Monday.
