Wife and I are buying a place with a 12x20 (11x19 on the floor) garage. It's got a 30x30 roof over it with gravel carports alongside but I won't have money to pour concrete for a while yet.

Anyone have pics / links showing how some guys made the most of a single car garage?
My hobby horse is a '57 Chevy longbed pickup, so I won't be able to work on it inside but I can at least get all the tools organized, right?

I have one, but its a mess and I'm too embarassed to share it with the masses. You get used to a small space after a while, doesn;t stop the complaints to my wife though. It's enough I built dollies to move my car back and forth, so I can work with 1 door open at a time.

Had a single car for a little over 10 years, hated it, but made do with it. Always playing "shuffle the vehicles", and if 2 things needed work at once, it was a royal PITA! Part of the "must haves" on our new home shopping list was sufficient garage space - no less than 2 cars worth, preferably more. The agent showed us nice places, but with a carport or 1 car, and got told they weren't even on our "to be considered" list.

Look at converting the carport area to shop space. I did that with our "era correct carport" --lol-- (the old farrier's stall for the forge) and it works out well; have canvas sides that hang from the framework and enclose it in the winter, and makes an outstanding welding area.

You have to be imaginative, but you can get a lot of use out of "non-traditional" shop space.

I have the dreaded 1 car garage and have started fixing it up. It's very much a work in progress but I don't mind showing it.

One of the things I did was add 2x8's across the top plate of the walls, installed a pull down ladder and OSB floor to create attic storage space. Since it doesn't get too cold here I didn't need to add insulation on the wall that faces the outside, so I bought some wire shelves from HD and cut them to fit between the wall studs. Good storage and they don't hold dirt. I'm fortunate in that I also have an attached laundry/work room. Although not large, it allowed me to install cabinets for storage. Originally I had planned on cabinets in the garage (left side of the pic) but would rather keep it open so a car door can swing open. I did pick up a library card catalog cabinet (in the pic) that fits in there nicely and will hold nuts and bolts. Another thing you can look at is some of those hanging wire shelves. I bought 2 of them but decided 1) I like the open, uncluttered look of the garage, 2) I really didn't want to have shi* hanging over my car, no matter how secure it is.

You should also spend some time reading through this thread:

Lot's of storage ideas. Hope that helps!

My garage is 12x19. While not ideal, it is useful. I'm able to get both of my cars in there (one at a time of course) to work on and have room for some storage.

I have a single that is too small for a car, or at least for our vans. Using for other purposes. No room for carport.

What does the entire structure look like. We need more photos, inside and out, including the carports. There are things to do to make it all work together.

This was my single car attached garage..bought the place about 3 yrs ago, wish I had some before pics, roof had no beam holding it up, no insulation, it was a complete disaster... While not big enough for my truck, I could at least tinker. Had it set up for welding. Had my 60 gallon air compressor in the basement. Have just recently rented and will be closing on my new/ used shop next week. Super excited!!!!![emoji106]
