First off i want to thank everyone for all the ideas that ive read on here, you guys have some amazing spaces. my single car has been quite the challenge, it seems like i can never get it to where i have form and function at the same time.
I stole the idea for my back wall off of another member of this site (predator, if youre reading this, remember imitation is the highest form of flattery! haha)I did all this today in less than 8 hours, looking at it, it doesnt look like much, but it really seems to make the garage look bigger and function a little better.

i moved my "toolbox" (a joke considering what ive seen on here) to the far wall, and put the mobile cart where the box used to be, that seems to make more sense. i removed the pegboard off of the workbench to make room for the shelving, the pegboard and framing has found a new home in my backyard shed. theres still a few things to do in there, but i think this has been a huge improvement. if i wasnt so tired i would finish tonight, but a full shift is all i had in me today!

center cabinet-free
outer cabinets-20 bucks at a yard sale
lumber-12 bucks plus tax

for under 35 dollars, i think it came out really well!

Great remodel.

Have you thought about hanging the speakers for the radio on the top left shelf throughout the garage? i was looking into it and didn't know if you were thinkin of doing it too.

Finley looks like you had a productive day there the cabinets/shelves look ike they belong there.

Rick

thanks! it was productive, not to say that i didnt pace around a few times trying to figure out what to do next.

i originally tried that, if you look on the first pic, you can see where i had them stretched as far as they would go on the walls. its a great sounding little system, but i would have to buy around 60 feet of audio cable to make it happen, and honestly, i dont think i will want to get into that project any time soon :bounce:

I actually think I liked it better before. It looks too busy now. I rather have stuff spaced out instead of having to go to the back wall to get something each time.

good choice, I see you got rid of the kids. I know it was tough, but with a small shop something has got to go and it sure isn't the man stuff ;)

looks good! I have a small shop too...my wife trusts it more than our attic though so I get to fill my rafters with winnie the pooh santa....if she just didn't sleep so lightly...:lol_hitti

Yeah, but it depends what you are doing with the space.

It looks like he made himself a little clear workarea. Which may not be a need if you are the type the just pulls stuff out to work on it.

I have a small space too 14x16, so I try to do a lot outside of it if possible. During the summer here it rains constantly though.

funny you mention that, because i refer to it as a 1 bike garage, since my civic can barely fit in it comfortably, but i like where your head is at!!

Thanks for showing us with one car garages that we are not alone! The garage looks great. I like the redo. It looks much more useful. I have a problem of having to put a 1977 BMW 320i (yes the one in my sig) into a 12x20 garage with one 81 CB900c motorcycle and still need a work bench and shelving.

Ground breaking of the new 24x24 detached garage will not come soon enough.

thanks for the comments guys. it didnt take long, i found all kinds of stuff to put in the cabinets. all it took was one look in the workbench drawers to see that!
so far, i am digging the usefulness of my re-do. it feels so much larger, and i dont know why i never thought to put my toolbox near the workbench. it seems so obvious that it would work better there.
first test this saturday, going to change the oil and adjust the chain on my R6.

its helped out alot. already my garage has managed to stay cleaner and feels way more organized. i still need more electric, but i'll make do with what i have until i have the resources ( $$$ ) to run more outlets.

i added some more cabinets in a somewhat wrap-around fashion, got the floor coated, and tried to space out the small area i have to work with. will be adding a few more lights fairly soon. and the moment i find any kind of a decent deal on a roller toolbox at least 48" wide, i will be scooping it up and making a stack out of my small *** box. i know this thread is old, and most of what ive done to this point is over a year old, but i figured it made more sense to continue a thread than start another one

it seems so obvious!

ok, first off, a little bit about my toolbox. im in no way able to compete with the gigantic beautiful toolboxes that everyone here has. you guys have amazing spaces with amazing collections of tools, and i know mine is a very modest entry into what anyone would call a "respectable" box.
when my wife and i first bought our house, my wife made sure that i was able to have a "real" toolbox instead of the plastic hinged haulers that i had been using ever since i was a teenager. for our first christmas in our house she found this small roller set (bottom box measures 24" across, and 13" deep, top box is 24" across and 10" deep) and a mobile workbench with a built in locker, since i was detailing alot of cars then, and it could carry all of my supplies, i was ecstatic. over the years ive all but gave up any use with the mobile workbench, the only thing it has been used for lately is to hold all of my oils, spray cans, and the work surface was a collect-all for anything i didnt feel like putting away at the time, but i hold a strong emotional attachment to my toolbox, since it was the first box i'd owned.
ive been rearranging my garage, and the mobile workbench doesnt fit into the equation of functionality and space anymore, so it was headed for the trash, but i didnt want to lose the small locker attached to it.

like the thread title says, it seems so obvious now that i stared at this small locker for the better part of 2 days trying to figure out how to use it, rather than bolting it to a wall, or pitching it into the trash. kind of stands out like a huge DUH after i remembered that they were bought it the same store, by the same manufacturer, and after i did the measurements.

Re: it seems so obvious!

Lookee' there! Toolbox is growing! Don't hate me for this, but if you would have put it on the other side, the door would have opened away from the rest of the box.

Good thinking though! ;)

it shouldnt be too hard for me to flip the hinges and lock, its not a complex box, but i had to mount it on the right side for space reasons, no room near the left side, dirtbike is in the way.

ok. for those interested, heres the update. i found two 3ft wide base cabinets for 20 bucks for the set, dumster dove and found a small 3 drawer filing cabinet, and bought a can of black paint. went nuts with the black paint on the cabinets, repainted the beer fridge black to be stealthy, drilled new holes for the kobalt workbench to lower the bottom shelf to make room for the fridge and filing cabinet. moved my toolbox back to where it started, bit it feels more useful there than it ever did on the back wall. next on the list ( hopefully before thanksgiving ) is to add another 4 ft flourescent and rewire sections to things will actually be on outlets instead of extension cords.

Re: it seems so obvious!

ok, i know my box is a chinese/korean, god knows where it came from, and trying to find an intermediate box has become something of an exercise in futility, then lo and behold i see a deal at walmart of all places, do all the measurements, and it is dimensionally a perfect fit. it seems that all that it would require is removing the top lid and finding a way to get the top and bottoms to meet up nicely, but im fighting not getting this. i wish they had the box without all the stanley tools with it, bit i suppose they cant hurt to have around.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Stanley-3-Drawer-Metal-Tool-Box-with-122-Tools/15173795

if anyone has any leads on a cheaper middle box with 23.5" x 10~12" dimensions, please let me know before they sell out of these.

Re: it seems so obvious!

Walmart had this Stanley box/tool combo in their Black Friday sales. All my local stores still have plenty of them left at the $68.00 Black Friday price. If you go this route, might be worth checking the local stores rather than ordering online.

Hi Finley,
Having worked for Walmart for many years, I can tell you that you should keep a watchful eye on these combos in your local stores. As we get closer to Christmas, these may start selling through. If they don't sell through at Christmas, I would bet they will be put on clearance in January. Just FYI for you.

Hey, I started out the same way with some old Craftsman boxes arranged identically...one tip...extend the wheels with a frame to the full width or it'll get tipsy!

ive decided to keep an eye on em, and hope that they have some left over after the holiday madness. i really want it, just cant justify 3 drawers for 75 bucks.
thanks for the tip
