Re: it seems so obvious!

ive decided to keep an eye on em, and hope that they have some left over after the holiday madness. i really want it, just cant justify 3 drawers for 75 bucks.
thanks for the tip

Just FYI. I was in my local Walmart today and they had the Stanley tool box/tool combos on clearance at $60.00. It looked like they were selling well at this price.

Re: it seems so obvious!

I know about tool box sentimentalism. I still have the entry level Craftsman top and bottom that I got cheap on clearance 20+ years ago. I was able to upgrade a bit several years ago (Sam's Club not Snap On). But that old set up still works and it now holds the stuff that I don't use very often. When you compare long term utility to the price of admission it is one of the best purchases I have ever made.

Re: it seems so obvious!

well, lo' and behold, my wife listens to me. i never went out and bought the box, but for christmas my wife did! she ordered it online for 49.99!

i tinkered with it a little bit, tried to make a middle box out of it, but then began to wonder about the weight buckling my box, so i remembered that my box was originally packed with the upper box shipped inside the bottom compartment, and its been a useless catch-all for a long time, so i decided to make it useful. unfortunately it meant that i had to pull the box completely apart to get the new box inside. i think this iteration will be my best bet, itll help store less frequently used tools, and keep some weight low on the setup for stability.

sorry for the **** pics, used my cell phone. the cabinet cover still works, and at a later date i may remove the lid on the new box to make more storage, but for now i'll worry about filling the drawers up.

really cant complain for 50 bucks. bunch of sockets, some better wrenches than i had, 2 new ratchets, a couple of tool rolls, socket rails, and a new box. love my wife!

Finley, nice set up you got there.
Hope you realize that most of the bling tool boxes you see posted are from guys who are nothing more than tool collectors and tool polishers.

Looks good Finley. I don't believe I would have thought of putting it inside the lower box. Great idea!

Very clever! I like it!

great idea

ya know the old saying "necessity is the mother of invention"

one thing to remember, not everybody on this forum started out with a monster toolbox. ive been pulling wrenches or 25+ years, and was buying tools for another 10 years before that.
for most of us it's taken (nearly) a lifetime to amass the collections you see in the "lets see your toolbox" & "vintage toolbox" threads.

i'm positive if i hadnt started making money pulling wrenches, my tool collection wouldnt be 20% of what it is now, and my garage basement & shp wouldnt be full of truck brand tool and toolboxes.

Pretty sweet - a big name shiney toolbox doesnt make you a good mechanic, and a craftsman box doesnt make you a bad one either. The cheaper box just means you can spend more money on tools! haha

great job!

This is a great thread, and what a transformation with only $76!! I recently moved and now have a single car garage that needs a face lift. Right now it's just useless wire shelving. I'm hoping it will be cheap just like yours but only time will tell as I haven't started yet. Thanks for all the ideas!

i haven't logged in for awhile now, but wanted to show some more work. i cleaned up the garage, and, during a horrible, painful painting accident that ripped my SEU cable off of the house, found a slight silver lining in an opportunity to wire a dedicated 20 amp garage circuit. so now a have conduit ran the length and width of the garage with 9 outlets, then ran to a wall switch, which then runs to 2 ceiling mounted outlets that power my stereo and the fluorescents. you can see some of the work in the picture.

Great looking garage! It's not the size of the garage that matter... It's what you can get done in it! :)

Very tidy. How is that homemade grinder stand working, anything you would do differently?

i think i would have spaced of off of the wall with a backstrap to have it mounted to a solid surface connecting 2 studs instead of just one stud. i think that it would limit or eliminate the slight drywall vibration i get when using it. other than that its been perfect

My thoughts exactly. I have a Waterloo Magnum toolbox that I got from Northern Tool some time ago for $2100. Something similar from a "truck" would have cost over $8000 at the same time. The smaller Snap-on boxes I originally got into the business with a long time ago now work great in my home garage. It's a Rick Mears commemorative combo.

Tools you can use; storage is just storage to me.
