Single Car Garage workshop

Good evening everyone,
So I've only posted on here to introduce myself. And I can say you guys are going to save me hours of stress. And give me hours on enjoyment just checking out the great shops everyone has built. So with that I thought I would show my humble little garage.

So our house has a three car garage. The two car houses my wife's car, and her Model A pickup. I get the third stall that is closed in. The builders didn't install a door. And that will come later. Maybe a barn style hanging on overhead rollers.

In this picture you can see her two car side with her Model A that I am starting to restore. Behind it is the doorway that I want to hang a barn door style door to save space. I wish the builders would have thought of a pocket door. But, a simple wood door would keep the noise down and warmer in the winter.
I also can't decide if I want to have one set of tool chests in the shop and one with the Model A for SAE tools.

The first thing we did was paint the floors. I used the rustoleum brand paint from home depot. It was a long but fairly simple process. I then added a diamond plate shop light. In the right hand side of the pictures with the bikes you can see the two sets of tool chests.

I haven't decided how to set it up at this point in the pictures.

Okay, so here is how it sits as of 11pm. I laid out painters tape to get the placement of my wood motorcycle table. I can't afford a $600 lift table on an enlisted soldiers pay. I could if I didn't want to restore that Model A an the CB650. But, a wood table will work great. A guy is making it for me. It will be 7ft long, 2ft wide, and 20in high. I have the tape 3ft wide. I have to call and change to dimensions tomorrow. He hasn't started yet. So I should be okay.

And I haven't mentioned it before. The garage is 10ft x 20ft. So, you can see why 2ft wide would be enough. In the back is a 1.5in ledge that is 3ft deep. I guess that is standard in garages. But, it is a pain for the table I have in back. It is 28in. So, I have to make or buy a 6ft workbench.

I can't decide how I want to have the layout. I need a place to weld, I plan on buying a drill press maybe a bench mounted one. It depends on what I find at a pawn shop. I can't find one that isn't made in china. And I refuse to send them another dollar if I can help it. I also need a bench grinder.

I haven't searched as hard as I should yet. But, I did try and find some other single car garage shops. I am curious as to how others set theirs up.

I also have the issue of storing my pressure washer, lawn mower and weed wacker in the shop. Only until I can build a tool shed. I want it to look similar to the house. So, it is good people like you are here to help.

Well, I want to Thank everyone for the help you have given so far. And that is just from me reading about your shops. And if any of you know of a garage that is similar to what I am working with I would appreciate the link.

Okay, I did some more planning today. And I am going to be getting some 2x4s for free. I bought my house in a new development. Some of the 2x4s might have cement from the forms. But, that is what pressure washers and sanders are for. I had some cosmetic grade diamond plate from a previous project. I wanted to see how it would look. The height isn't final. And I used 3M command tape to hold it temporarily. And as you can see I have a slight downgrade deal with. I plan on making it around 37". The back is going to be 6ft tall. The back will support a 12" shelf. And the back will also support the pegboard.
As for the bottom. I want to have tool chests be removable. Since the top will come close to blocking the tools chests in with a 2x4 stringer, I am going to use an 8ft section of 1 1/2 square steel tube. The bench top will be MDF, and if I can afford it later sheetmetal on top of that.
Two members have similar styles I am going for- zer01 (post #122), jr2 (post #305).

I am going to draw up some plans to give everyone a better idea. But, so far this will also allow me to store my plastic tool/parts cart under the bench.
And in the back of the garage I can build a shelving unit for parts.

Hey everyone,

So I haven't made much progress. I am still in a lot of pain from my hip surgery, and I might need a total hip replacement now. So, that means I have to rely on my wife to help build.

So, we got the bench built. I still have to add the plywood to the bench top. And I need to add a support leg near the middle. I am going to offset the support to the right side so I can still slide a stool I under.

I also got an 8" drill press off of Craigslist. It's a harbor freight press. But for $40 I can't complain since it works great. I also added the pegboard, and started to hang tools randomly. I am still reorganizing my tool chests. I am going to make the top drawer on the right chest for drill bits, basically making everything close to each other.

The 6.5ft L x 6.5ft H x 2ft deep shelf will be where the plywood in the back is sitting. I am making the shelf heights 2ft from the floor for the first then 18in for the rest. It should allow space for Rubbermaid bins below.

I also have to make the table for the bikes. It is going to be out of 2x6s.

I also started a welding certificate course at Central Texas college last night. So, time is even more limited.

So far I haven't done anything else in the garage. I had a scare with one doctor thinking I might need a total hip replacement. I just saw a surgeon last week and he said I need an Adductor Tenotomy. My injury is typical in soccer and hockey athletes. I was getting back into hockey when I hurt my hip in 2012. So, it's good to know the recovery will be easier.

I still have to finish the shelves. My circular saw batteries are at theend of their life. Might look on craigslist for a corded replacement. This welding course has been taking up time also. Hard to concentrate on reading while taking meds and sitting on a wood chair in class. But hey, I got an 87 on my test last week while on narcotics. I won't be welding for a few weeks so no need to worry about being on meds. Just the academic portion for now.

Thanks for the compliments. I know everyone has different tastes when it comes to motorsports. Ford vs. Chevy, Stock vs. Hot Rod. But that is what makes sites like this great. I personally hate the super long choppers from OCC. But, I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into making them. TIG welding funky shaped tanks is an art. With enough practice I plan on making some aluminum cafe tanks for all three of my bikes. The Model A will remain original. Maybe just add an electronic ignition. I found one that looks almost original, and it will make driving it much easier for my wife. I do have to fix the suspension, it is saggy after 85 years of use. I am also looking at making a welding table in the back right corner. But that will be after all the other projects I have going.

Now this weekend we worked on our master bathroom. It doesn't tie in with Garage Journal. But, I plan on using the same Gray and black for stripes in the garage. I am thinking two stripes a 3-4 inch stripe (bottom) and a 1-2 inch stripe (top) The neutral color will help with the light, and the stripes will help break up the monotone color. I am thinking black for the 4" stripe and gray for the 2" stripe. I have attached two photos to show the color and this past weekends project. I still have to finish painting the trim, I didn't like the cheap ones we had. So that will be worked on tonight or tomorrow after class.

I would like to build a 40s pickup as a mild Hot Rod. I want something I can pull a teardrop trailer to camp in. And tow the bikes. Our model A will be for meeting at the ice cream parlor, in and out burger, etc... Just to have fun. But, I want a vintage work truck. You'll have to posta picture of yours. I'd love to see it.
