Single most useful tool for regular joe?

This is actually a thread to get ideas for groomsmen gifts.

All of my groomsmen are fairly manly but only one or two actually work on cars enough to get them something like a Dual 80 ratchet, which was my first idea.

My second idea was to get Victorinox Spirit X multitools but they seem expensive compared to what I paid a few years ago but my old lady thinks they're cool and a good idea.

So I guess what i'm looking for is something that would be useful for a regular joe homeowner but still is unique enough for a groomsman gift?

Thanks.

I got my groomsmen leatherman multi tools or mini tools. They are key chain sized. I had them engraved. I think my one buddy still has his after 10 years. They had little scissors instead of pliers. Pretty neat gifts

Ratcheting screwdriver. Everyone should be able to use a screwdriver.

I am currently in a simliar spot. Bunch of motorhead/manly guys in the groupl. I've decided to have 1" Mac combination wrenches milled down and engraved, then have them cerakoted for each of the groomsman. My best man is getting a 1 1/4 Mac combination cerakoted. I'm personally making the stands for them. I know its not completely the direction you are interested in, but maybe it will spark an idea for you. Best of luck!! I look forward to seeing what you come up with, I'm sure they will appreciate anything you give them!

GOOD knife or flashlight is another good idea, but that can get expensive.

the ratcheting screwdriver is something I hadn't thought about before. The knives and flashlights I had, and probably would do knives because I like them. It wouldn't be sebenzas but maybe kershaw blurs or something.

I received an engraved Leatherman as grooms gift for a wedding I was the best man in. It is pretty cool, but I don't use it. Ever time I see it in the drawer I'm torn, I don't want to mess it up, but a tool unused in a drawer is a waste.

I gave my groomsman a good bottle of scotch. I knew they would get good use from that that.

A knife would probably be the most useful. I'm always using my knife at least a few times a day. Same with my pocket flashlight. Both are very handy to have and dont have to be hung on your belt like most multitools.

Nice mini LED flashlight. Maratac or Preon, something along those lines maybe.

A good pocket knife.

My groomsmen each got a nice Spyderco w/ G10 handles, a Victorinox Mini, a Fenix AAA light, and a maple bacon lollipop.

Yeah I think I'd get Victorinox Swiss Army knives and maybe a nice flashlight for each guy. Knives and flashlights are useful gifts because everybody can always use more of them (for each car, for the kitchen drawer, toolbox, etc.). I keep a knife on the stand by the door -- great for opening packages.

I had this little SwissTech multitool that goes on your key-chain that was really cool. I didn't like carrying a Leatherman all the time. For one, I don't like wearing a belt. But I liked having the basic screwdriver on me all the time. It's apretty cheap little doohickey, but plenty useful.

As far as memorable gift, I received a SS engraved flask as a groomsman gift once. Not something I use too often, but I know exactly where it is located right now, and every time I do use it, it's a great reminder of my good friends and their special day.

Pocket flashlight. nobody buys themselves a good one yet everyone needs one. Something with a pocket clip. Theyre great when someone walks to the car at night or a power outage or looking under a sink. I've been wearing one daily since my first about 15 years ago. Right beside my Parker pen, another nice item.

I use my pocket knife everyday, would be lost without it. I think every man can use a knife. I think a snap on gift would be awesome imo but not sure everyone would appreciate a gift like that as much as I would.

I have lots of leathermans, and I'd like to get several more. The S2 juice is a great mid-range model that's small enough to carry and large enough to be useful. The squirt series is ok, but really small. Rebar is good, charge and surge are high end.

So for gifts check out: I'd look at a leatherman s2, a fenix e05, fenix LD20, four sevens preon, benchmade mini-griptillian, spyderco delica ffg, leatherman skeletool CX or other such thing.

My vote is for a nice pocket flashlight. I have a simple streamlight microstream I carry in my shirt pocket and I'd be lost without it.

Other cool things for me would include:

-Snap-on ratcheting screwdriver
-Nice folding pocketknife. A "Sunday knife" as my dad calls it. The kind of thing you take to church or wedding instead of your edc knife.
-Flask and a bottle of scotch or bourbon
-Quality ink pen. A nice fountain pen can be an heirloom.

If you want to stick to tools, every man could use a pair of Knipex mini bolt cutters.

This might be a little left field, but :bounce::bounce:

A bad-*** pair of utility scissors?...everybody needs one, they are hard to spend money on rationally...good ones aren't THAT expensive...not overly trendy....and even the SO will probably get to use it if its not strictly in the tool box...and some usa/german/japanese goodness for every day use...

Leatherman's are nice but $$$ and seem to collect dust if you have real tools around. The ultralight ones maybe more of a swiss substitute, but less of a tool.

Single most useful tool for regular joe would be Knipex Cobra pliers. You could pick from the 5, 6, 7, or 10" size (or larger!).

Runners up:
-Estwing 16 oz. claw hammer
-Klein 11-in-1 multi screwdriver with cushion grip
-ChannelLock 10" adjustable wrench 810W

My EDC tool is the Leatherman Mini Tool. Been retired for some time so have to go to eBay. Made in USA. Can get good one for about $40 on eBay. If you want something with current production maybe consider Leatherman Squirt PS4.

My EDC knife is a Kershaw 1830 "OSO Sweet". Made in China. Can get it for less than $20 on Amazon. Kershaw also offers plenty of made in USA. For a groomsman I might spring for made in USA.

When I carry a flashlight in a pocket I go for portability, so only one AAA battery. The Streamlight MicroStream is a popular small light.

A mug? Sorry, couldnt resist.

I know at least one occasion where those little pocket Stanley 3' tape measures were used as favors for a wedding. They are very cheap, but usable.
You could throw one of those in, or get em a nicer one. Its often a missing important tool.

I'm in the pocket knife (simple folder or small Swiss Army knife) for groomsman camp. I think the multi tool is a nice idea but I bet it probably wouldn't be used much by most if not all. If you want them to use it they need to carry it and if they're going to carry it it needs to be small. JMO.

As far as most useful tool for average Joe, I'd vote for a good battery operated drill that could be used to drive screws too, but that's another question, LOL.

BTW, I gave my groomsmen watches. If I had to do it again, I'd go with the pocket knife, LOL...

I use this EVERY DAY:

https://www.swissarmy.com/us/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/SwissCards/SwissCard-Lite/p/0.7333.T3

Combine it with this:

http://www.swisstechtools.com/proddetail.aspx?pid=6

And/Or this (I have both):

http://www.swisstechtools.com/proddetail.aspx?pid=5

You'd be surprised what you can do. The last two can be picked up for less than ten bucks a piece.

I built a computer with that card alone a while back, and the little light inside means you've always got a flashlight no matter where you are. The blade is sharp, as well, and you'd be surprised how often you'll use the damned pen.

Trust me. Once you convince them to stick one in their wallet... They'll never be without the thing.

The other two items fit easily on a key ring without adding too much weight. I just fixed a bothersome set of battery terminals on the side of the road with the combination a couple of weeks ago.

You pick up at least the card, and possibly the other two for little bonuses, and you're getting something nice, rather than cheaping out to get everyone a relatively unimpressive multi-tool.

The best part is, someone who isn't mechanically inclined will limit themselves to what they are capable of; but someone who is mechanically inclined can actually do real work in a bind, or just simple stuff when it's too much of a pain to get the real stuff out.

A good quality gentleman's knife is a great gift. Something small and slim is easily carried and unlikely to be labeled a "weapon." It's also something your friends will want to keep forever. I also like the idea of a multi-tool but I think the average guy isn't going to carry one in his pocket for very long. More likely he'll throw it in a drawer where it will be forgotten until someone else finds it 10 years from now and ask if they can have it. Then they'll throw it in their own drawer where it will be forgotten for another 10 years. The cycle repeats itself indefinitely. That's why multi-tool manufacturers offer such long warranty's; they don't really break because most of them are in drawers somewhere. ;)
