Sink trap

Okay so this is not a heating and/or cooling question.

My son re-did his half bath and installed a small pedestal sink. It is so small that a standard trap sticks out too far from the wall to line up with the tail piece from the bowl. The connection in the wall is a 1 1/2" elbow so a reducer is also required (bathroom sink drains are typically 1 1/4"), which pushes it out further.

Are those plastic flex tail pieces "legal" ?

Suggestions ?

I had this same problem on my old wall mounted sink, the horizontal distance from the wall to the tail pipe was too short for any p-trap and the wall pipe was completely centered so offsetting the trap was impossible.

I did find a solution that was to install a "bottle trap" which allowed for enough clearance. The thing was quite pricey but it was the only solution that fit. It does look very high end european style so I guess I'm happy with it. To answer your question I'm not sure if bottle traps are allowed in code but I figured its got to be better than the cheapo flexi-type traps. I bought mine at Home Depot:

The cheapest one was around $50. A quick search will show many of them in the $90-$120 range.
