Yes you read that right. 12 point metric sockets on a six point drive system.

My 92 year old Grandpa just showed them to me today. We were in a hurry so I didn't get more than 8 seconds to assess.

He aquired them in Russia. I will investigate more and he said he will gather the set up and give it to me next time.

Anyone ever see such a set, cause Google isn't being helpful.

I have a very old SAE set with a 6 pt drive. I don’t believe the sockets have a name on them. I’ll try and take a look tomorrow.

You can find more hex drive if you look on eBayUK. Britool made some, but there were others...

I have an old Indestro set that is 6-pt drive as well. Was pretty common on early socket sets.

What do you find wrong with the square drive?
Nothing is necessarily wrong with it, but a hex drive would give more material for a given overall diameter (enscribed circle is maybe the term I'm looking for?) therefore would be stronger.

On the otherhand... hex is closer to "round" and I guess would be easier to round off, though unlikely.

Since breaking off square drives (at least on halfway decent tools) is not very common it probably doesn't matter that hex may be slightly stonger... as I said, there's nothing necessarily wrong with square.

The only ones I've seen were the O ratchet sets. I have one of those in a drawer somewhere. I think the hex would be more problematic.
