Just FYI, I've been the class clown since kindergarten. And my mother was none too happy with that moniker either. :lol_hitti

My home, being 60 years old, was not endowed with the largest of 2 car garages. That's one reason I had built the 3rd garage I posted pics of elsewhere here. I will include a pic here of it a little further along, the interior having been given a fresh coat of Bennie Moore.

Back to my main garage. I wanted/needed it longer. Wider would've been nice but was out of the question. I also wanted to be rid of the two 8 foot doors and column in the middle and a new 17' door in its place and stead. What you see has added 30 inches in length. Imagine that.

My carpenters are hard at work. The new door arrives tomorrow. A few pics of the progress. As always, feel free to comment, whether positive or negative, I can take it. I got size. ;)

Beautiful garage. Is it going to be for cars, tools/equipment or for a mancave?

Thank you. cars and some storage in general. I'm not the least bit handy. Hard wiring a radar detector is the limit of my talents.

Nice! I need to do the exact same thing to my attached garage. The previous owners bumped the house out into the garage about 5' to add a first floor laundry & mudroom which is nice but leaves the garage so shallow that you can't park anything but small cars in it.

that's a great looking garage.. love the tie in out at the front, great choice for the ceiling..

I may steal the look for our downstairs powder room (and probably wont give you credit)..

Nice job.

Had to do the same thing at one of my places -- mine was a little older and built for a model T --- not a 59 Cadillac.

I wanted something a little longer, to show off, to make the wife happy, all the usual reasons, but they didn't have anything in white.

Oh, garages. Never mind.

Very nice looking project. Nothing wrong with not being particularly handy if you can hire folks who are. Some of us are not particularly handy but have to be anyway. Keep the pictures coming.

I did the same ceiling in my basement. Looks great, and not super expensive. Plus, you don't have to mud/tape drywall. :bounce:

Ive got a question. Would the addition of that little "hood" be considered a reverse circumcision. :headscrat

I’ve seen older garages in my area that have a front or rear bump out like that to allow enough length for a modern car to be parked inside.

Can you show us a picture from the street showing both garage entrances? The smaller one being offset breaks up one big wall of doors I’m sure.

I'll be the first to nitpic; I would have used the same pitch for the addition as the main roof.
Otherwise looks good.

I cannot argue with your nitpick. But here's the story. A year ago we put a 35' x 23' addition on our home, a new kitchen with media room. We didn't really set a budget but guessed about 150k. It came in closer to 250k.

In this instance, I had bought a Porsche Panamera and it barely fit in the 2 car garage lengthwise. So I had the idea of lengthening it. Also, the overhang, which has been a part of the house long before we purchased it, was mainly used for storage of my ATV, etc. But in the winter it would be as if there was no roof over it at all. The snow would pile up in it like crazy.

A friend of mine had a lousy carport, no garage, and he put up cheap walls, no foundation, and basically it looked like a 2 car garage.
So that was the idea I had. I just wanted to close it in for weather purposes. When I told my buddy/builder, he said absolutely not. If he was going to do it for me, it had to be done right, with footings, foundation, weather tight, etc. So, my 15k project turned into a 25k if not more project. Finished today. I was not in a position to take down the roof of the overhang and redo it entirely though I agree with you and would have liked to.

Ive got a question. Would the addition of that little "hood" be considered a reverse circumcision. :headscrath:)

I believe you are correct.

Was the addition put on to stagger the openings of the garage ?

No. It was even but I wanted the main 2 car garage to be longer and so worked out that way.

see pics below.

Were you limited to 30"?

And what's with the goofy shed roof instead of extending the gable?

Bill

Goofy shed roof is answered above. Yes, I was limited to 30" as otherwise I'd be violating the side yard setback.

The wood on the ceiling is a nice touch, I like it. Will you be doing the same in the larger garage?

No. But I did put in 9 high hats in the main garage. And they finished painting today.

Only thing left is through this forum I ordered a RaceDeck floor for the new garage.

Please do not think me an ******** for posting the following. When I had a Macan when they first came out, I held a get together at my home for people on the Macan forum and one of the gentleman attending made these signs for all attendees.

As you can see, the Panamera barely fit and that's where I got the idea to lengthen it. And I tried to put my new F150 Platinum in tonight and it was too long, unless I remove a large tool chest and refrigerator from the front wall.

These are my stainless steel shelves with a few car care items. I like to wash my vehicles. Really would have liked to put in a floor drain and tile the entire one car garage. Oh, well.

This is where I got the idea for the ceiling from, part of the addition we did that I mentioned above.

I see you're a fan of Griot's products, I'm rapidly becoming one myself.

Both your garages turned out great, thanks for sharing your photos! :)

Thank you. While I do like Griot products, I actually like their spray bottles and the look of them along with the labels.

Btw, I see you are in Utah. This past August we drive from NY to Utah with my then 2017 Raptor. To Bryce, Arches and Zion. First time in your great state. Incredible beauty. Can’t wait to return.

It's a little late now and given the small size of the roof addition load bearing won't be a huge issue, but there is not a proper header installed above the new garage door. Even on non load bearing walls, a fairly large (2x8 - 2x12?) header should be installed to span 17'. 2x4's or 2x6's framed in that fashion offer very little strength.

It's interesting that they installed a large header where your garage door used to be, which is for the most part a non load bearing wall, but didn't bother to put a header above the new garage door.

I would be interested to see what that opening looks like in 5 years.

You are speaking of the 17’ door, correct? The outside and inside are both 2 LVLs supported on concrete footings with I believe 5 or 6 either 2x4 or 2x6 vertical supports on each side.

There is no room above the garage and so it’s not a lot of weight at all.

It was designed by a PE/Registered Architect so I’m sure it’s fine.

I do appreciate you looking out though.

On another note, we used Sakrete All-Weather Blacktop Patch to smooth out the large hump left from the driveway to the entrance to the new one car garage as the slab wound up about an inch or 2 higher and that's a rather large bump for the Porsche, requiring a press on the accelerator and I don't want to take a chance of being a complete nerd and wind up driving through the rear wall.

My question is, although the bag says ready for traffic immediately, it doesn't seem rock hard and it was poured at least 10 hours ago.

Will it harden? How long do I have to wait? I stepped on it and it turned the sole of my sneaker black and some small pieces came out.

Please help with raising blacktop. I used Sakrete patch across front of slab lip but it’s not hardening. Do I need hot pour or is there another product?

I'm not certain, unfortunately. But here's a bump to your thread in hopes that someone in the know will see this & be able to help.

So my workers removed the sakrete blacktop patch today as the company assured me it's not suited for the purpose I used it and would never harden. Oh, well. I'm further informed a hot pour is the only thing that will work.
