just getting ready to erect my walls for my garage this weekend and have a quick question.

The package I bought has 1x6 strapping to be used for perlins, a carpenter friend of mine suggested he would use 2x4's for the strapping, which would indeed make it stronger but I would like to know what everyone suggests?

Btw, garage is 28x38x10, 2x6 construction,16" OC, trusses 24"OC, metal roof, vinyl siding.

Thanks!

How far apart are you going to put them? 1" x 6" would work, 2" x 4" would be stronger, but if it were mine, I'd use 1/2" OSB covered in felt paper.

Are not those to be used for diagonal bracing. With the vinyl siding your going to need some type of sheeting on the outside. No carpenter here, but...............

I may be missing something but is your Vinly siding not going on horizontally? Why Purlins?

I went with 2x4" 24" apart for metal siding but it was installed vertically. You mention your going with Vinyl.. I know you wont want to spend the money but I have been watching a house being built on my route to work. 2x6 framed then the foil backed foam 1/2" sheets of insulation then today they put the vinyl siding over that. I did see some 2x" on the inside of the walls for bracing but they will need to come off at some point. If your going OSB or 1/2" rock on interior this may be a option...?? mate to not see some type of sheathing in place to help avoid the entire wall from racking?

:wtf: I may be missing something, but Purlins are the horizontal boards on the roof. Girts are the horizontal boards on the sides. :headscrat

If you're nailing into the 1x material by hand without a nail gun it's bouncy and you'll bend some nails, also splits easier.

Ok, sorry for the confusion, what I am asking is should I use 1x6 strapping or 2x4 strapping for my metal roof? I will have 2x4 trusses spaced 24"oc.

If 2x4 is used, how far shall I space my strapping? 16,18,24"??

The vinyl siding will be installed over regular osb sheeting.

Thanks.

The spacing will depend on your snow load. I believe they are using 24" O.C. around here, some are also using 2x6 and that will vary centering of the purlins.

There is no way I would use a 1x6 unless it was a small (10x12) garden shed. Even at that, the 2x4 would probably be very close in price.

Check with your truss supplier, or look on your truss shop drawing.
The standard note on my truss drawing it states right on the drawing, "In lieu of rigid sheathing use 2x4 purlins @ 24" o/c"

I would doubt that 1x material would cut it, unless you asked the truss manufacturer to design the trusses to use that material.

But again I design trusses in Canada, and the codes may differ where you build

I wouldnt use a 1x4. I used 2x4s laying flat 16in o/c. Around here thats about the min. Alot of people stand them on edge inside the truss, That is much stonger but alot more work, and the cost of hangers.

If you bought engineer'd trusses(vs buying used,or homeboys),take advantage of the truss co's expertise.IOWs,as posted above, check with the folks who made them. They'll have all the data you require......and is one very compelling reason to go with a quality truss co.
