I know go as big as you can. My question is would you build a 40'x40'x12' or a 36'x48'x12'? It will have 2- 12'x10' garage doors and 1 service door if that matters.

Like forAK said, it depends what you're using it for. I like the sound of a 40' x 40' but that's because it would suit the "junk" I'd be moving in there. Either option seems like it would give you plenty of room.

Are the 2 12' doors going on the 36' side or the 48'? Just curious but that could be a mind changer for me.

Don't ask.
40 ft sounds like just deep enough for 2 vehicles/trailers.
I'd probably go 36'x48' to give extra room if the are end to end (and an extra 148 sqft).

Either way, just remember that is a big roof.
And it is going to need BIG gutters and downspouts going to someplace that can accept the water.

BTW, I would go for the 36x48.
It would be easier to get the trusses for.

But run the numbers of more 36 vs fewer 40 trusses.

The barn would be 48 wide and 36 deep. The doors would be on the 48' side. The barn would be for fabrication work and to build cars in.

Finally got my estimate back its $17,800 for the 36x48 or $16,400 for the 40x40.
That's not including concrete.

That being said - I'd go 48x36. You can have 3 working bays and have plenty of room in front of and behind vehicles.

I went with the 36x48 because it works for me. Part of the decision was the separate area for the machine shop/clean area. You can see it in the link below.

Don't rely on ballpark estimates for concrete. I met with my first concrete guy last night (48x50), and I'm still jittery from sticker shock. :eyecrazy:

I think a medium quality roof comes to more than a third of your whole barn estimate.
40x40 is 1600sqft.
Your quote is for TEN DOLLARS A SQUARE FOOT.

I'll take 20,000 sqft for that amount.

Some guys here paid more than that just for site prep.

Location is definitely important. I was quoted $18.5k to have a 40x40x16 with 2 14x14 insulated doors built by a local Amish place. Ended up going 40x64x16 for about $26k. Did a lot of the work myself and with family, so saved about $3k on labor vs what the Amish wanted.

Edit-those numbers didn't include concrete. Wanting to say that was around $8k for a 6" thick pad.

No. Originally talked to New Marion Steel (Amish), but ended up working with my wife's cousin and some guys he does side work with. Did buy my materials fromWiggam Lumber in New Washington though, who i really recommend.
